There are three things that make me crazy about my '97.  First, I can't store it on its side because fluids leak and you risk getting gas sucked in thru the air filter.  Second, changing the air filter is way too complicated and the filter is way too expensive.  Third, first gear is too high and sixth is too low.   It would be nice if first was extremely low to prevent having to constantly slip the clutch at very low speeds.  And it would be nice to be able to cruise at 90 at a decent rpm.   Anyone know if the 800XC avoids these problems.
