Title: batteries
Post by: Spud Murphy on September 27, 2017, 10:48:06 AM
could someone recommend the correct type size ect battery for a 955, I have been getting through batteries at an alarming rate lately, my mechanic has now admitted the battery he has put which has now died is underpowered for the bike.  :cp

So I'm looking for the correct replacement

cheers in advance

Cheers Spud  :thumbsup

Should be the same as the 885i, which is Yuasa YTX 14 BS, but there are other alternatives, Li Ion, are all the rage lately

it has a YUASA 14-BS on at the moment but as I understand it this battery does not have enough umph to turn the bike over repeatedly and it then cause's the plates inside the battery to buckle  :m

I've also been told to ride it more  :mut

Personally I like these

I know there are others that don't but I have never had an issue with one and they are nice and powerful.

I went through two of the lead acid YUSA batteries and I have currently been using an AGM battery with success. AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat...

After doing a lot of research I ended up with:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YMRH70/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YMRH70/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Nice article on GEL vs AGM at:

http://www.batterystuff.com/kb/articles/battery-articles/gel-vs-agm.html (http://www.batterystuff.com/kb/articles/battery-articles/gel-vs-agm.html)

We both like the same battery... 2 votes then. :thumbsup

This site says it should be a YTX14 BS, but how long is the bike standing unused, and how are you maintaining the battery during its 'downtime'?
i.e. do you have a Optimate/Oximiser/C-Tek etc connected?

I guess the question is why is it turning over repeatedly? Mine sits for long periods with a c tek charger on but never fails to start after a short crank.

AS JD says is there a charger attached?

Long term use will mask the signs of a failing battery but if your careful you can tell when it's time to replace it.

Is the starter cabling/relay/starter OK?? Best battery in the world won't help a poor starter circuit or starter brush issue

I'd change both the mechanic and battery because neither seem up to the job.

Bike is used all year round, but due to taking up off roading does stand for periods of time. I put an optimate on it and leave it attached for periods of time.

The day it failed I had stopped a short period of time before to fill up and the bike started fine, then would not start the next time. It was bump started then run fine all the way home some 50 ish miles. Stopped on the drive and then would not start again. A tester was put on it and it was kicking out over 13.5 volts  :m

so will try new battery as recommended on here  :thumbsup

I think the newer gel/agm and lithium batteries have a tendency to fail fast, with little warning, due to the way there constructed.
Not the lingering death of a wet cell of old.

And the way one deals with such which has been mentioned many a time on here is don't leave you battery on a tender all the time, because if you do it mask's the real state of the battery.

I learned the hard way  with my  K1200 a few years ago off the tender down to Portsmouth docks and after 175 miles it fell flat on its face, hence why now I put a tender on every now and then I can tell the state of the battery by how long it takes to come to a full charge if it's been standing for a month.

Plus with the battery prices dropping like they have i'm doing 2 years on a battery and if I have the slightest doubt it's in the bin,the only one that seems to defy all the odds is the lithium on my SM that just keeps going, but the Tiger doesn't like e'm because of the Electrex R/R that is on it.

I cycle my several batteries through a 24hr charge every 3 months, all different makes of battery, sizes and bikes. It does show up that sizes counts since the bigger batteries last years while working hard but the smaller types always fail, even after regular charging. What also encourages me to charge for short more controlled periods is as a result of my pal burning down his workshop, losing many uninsured bikes, the fire was started by a battery charger!  :icon_sad:

Interesting post but do you mean tender or charger if it's charger blimey I haven't seen one in 15 years or more for the exact reason you mentioned.

He was charging a new lithium battery on his sons Oset electric trials bike, proper big raging inferno, steel beams were bent with the heat, destroyed the whole building!

I just replaced an 11 year old Varta YTX14-BS with another one. The only reason for replacing was that after the 72000 mile service one of the terminals fell apart so that I couldn't get a decent contact. £48.57 from Tayna Batteries.

Lithium batteries make raging fires; you just have to see what happens if they have an internal short.    He was using the correct charger for the bike surely?

Having seen what the Lithium do when they fail, and how ferociously they burn, however unlikely, I think its not for me.
Good quality modern smart chargers are very sensibly priced these days. In the UK even Toolstation, a builders store, has a Ring 4A IP65 rated unit for 32 GBP.
Accepting that batteries are consumables helps, and especially with the earlier bike sprag, a 4/5 year replacement cycle seems reasonable to me

The lithium on my XT is 4 years old this month,I did buy a lithium charger for it i've Tried it once just to see how it worked not even bothered when it's stood for months during the winter.

But I do unstandard folks reluctance some have never progressed from a steamer so the 21st century is a bit of a step into the modern day  :icon_lol:

Thing is, the quality of Lithium batteries is too varied at the moment and there are too many cheap shit Chinese ones out there. Even Boeing got caught with their 787 Dreamliner catching fire mid flight. I read recently that they never did get to the bottom of that and those aircraft are still flying about with shit, potentially dangerous batteries. So you'll excuse me if I stick to tried and tested Lead/Acid.

Are 'modern day' bikes really that much better? I've not ridden a bike that I'd swap my Steamer or Super3 for. If you want to ride at 'warp' speeds, you might have a point😉
Anyway, don't those Lithium batteries need 'waking up?
Title: Re: batteries

I'll digress  :icon_ :icon_biggrin:

As a 16 year old and old enough to visit my grandparents without my folks and ride a motorcycle teboot I arrived and they were in the middle of a domestic because something had cost £5 now when they were young the old white £5 note was worth big bucks but they just hadn't Moved on and were stuck in a time warp and I vowed i'd Never get into the same situation.

The classic quote about wanting to ride around at warp speed couldn't be further from the truth,i've Spent a fortune on my 955 it's light years better than a stocker when I bought my X/R I expected something better maybe another 2 rungs up the ladder I got 10  :icon_eek: I nearly fell into the same trap as my grandparents,it's not about riding fast it's just about how much easier it is to ride at the same speed, but yes you do have the ability to ride at warp speed to combat all the car drivers with their 200+hp turbo diesels.

Like comparing a Steamer to 69 Boni time just moves on from pre-unit to unit from British push rod vertical twins Jap 4's and the same goes for batteries we have two friends who both run electric cars at the mo they'll go 120 miles or so and dealer said only lease because 5 years from now they'll be doing 400 miles on a charge.

Never mind the rights and wrongs pros and cons it's the way it is when it comes to progress unless you want to live in a time warp plenty do!!,.

You say that your bike is light years better than stock but as you never come to any meetings, no-one can tell and it's just your opinion.

Oh blimey there are plenty of folk who will attest to how good the bike is they've spent enough time chasing it the fact that their not the type that camp behind pubs and pretend to be off-roaders appears to be more your problem than mine.

'Camping behind pubs'! I concur! Blacktiger(howard)Nick and myself, camping behind a pub, somewhere near lake Bala,North Wales,on our way to the tigertriple meet 2016. Pretending to be 'off roaders/adventure bike riders types'!!😉

Ignoring Mr Luddite here the important thing to remember with Lithium is check that the Reg/Rec likes them the down side i've Had is with my Electrex supplied Reg/Rec when a lithium was connected the system didn't like it and their website now has a warning saying such.

One of joys of multi bike ownership you see a crossection talking about such temperature can certainly be an issue but I see plenty of other guys using them on a cross section of bikes.

Other reg/rec's are available

Should have said aftermarket because factory fitted certainly do work with lithium.
