Title: Ode to a Steamer.... [steamer pictures thread]
Post by: tigerrider on August 04, 2007, 01:21:20 PM
Oh, that title doesn't sound quite right...but anyways..

I just want to list out some of the reasons I love this model of the Triumph best of all. Please add something I may have left out.

The Engine: Of *all* the Hinckly Triumphs, the T-3 in the Tigers is by far the most attractive. From the polished fin ends on the side of the block to the minimal amount of hoses showing, it's very sano.

The Plastic: Those headlights and bodywork...remind me of where the Super Tenere' might have progressed to at one point. It's tough without looking hideous.

The luggage: The rough finish Givi bags hold up VERY well as crash bars and that finish stands up so well, you can't really tell which one I slid on or which one I partialy ran over (while open) with my truck.

Not at all.  Good for the karma.  I recall seeing an RIP thread a couple years ago about a fellow who just kept buying more Tigers.  IIRC he had accumulated about 20 when he passed away.

My beloved. With under 5k it is barely broke in. Contemplating if it will be the ride to take to C. America this fall/winter. (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c178/narelz/tigerandford024.jpg)[/img]

Someday...

I think he was from Ohio.  I talked to him about one of his bikes when he was selling his collection, but my wife wouldn't let me buy it sight unseen.  So instead of buying the $5k Steamer, I bought a $17k BMW.  Showed her!

The rumor I heard was that he never went into a dealership that had one on the floor and didn't buy it.  That'll be me after I win Powerball tomorrow night - I'm going to horde them...big warehouse full of them.  Screw you guys.

Just a couple hours...then I'm on easy street.  My 5 year old wants an FJ...no a mustang...no an FJ.  After that the wife gets a Rangie and I get another 10 year old Tiger.  Which is fine!  The 2 year old will get some new diapers...the ones we've been throwing in the dryer are starting to wear thin...

My front fender is an Acerbis Tecnik and an Acerbis aluminum front brace.  I mounted it using the banjo bolt at the bottom of the brake junction box (I went with two lines right out of the master instead).

So you're a New Englander - nice!  We're in Eliot, just over the border from Portsmouth (I grew up in NH as well).  We wanted to escape the high property taxes so figured we'd pay state income tax instead...

nice, since it rains so much up here in washington, we just hang our 2 year old out the window and let the rain wash him off   thanks for the info on the fender, how did you mod your wind screen?  elliot,s nice, i spent three years working at the shipyard in kittery.   later

It's a different front headlight surround...'Patrick' may be able to get his hands on one if you're interested.  Send him a PM, not sure if he's aware of this revived site.

It's not for the faint of heart...needed some tweaking to get to fit.

Title: Steamer Pictures Thread
Post by: fishnbiker on August 27, 2007, 08:50:51 AM
Here's snap of my 95 at the bottom of the Copper Canyon in Mexico, just after the starter sprag clutch failed with me having to make a 7,000ft climb on gravel road fully loaded. The starter failed after high centering on a huge rock while crossing a washout on a super rough 2 track road, that tore 2 fins off the oil pan & broke an engine mounting lug. The road in the photo is the highway, not the rough road. I consider it lucky I got to ride it home, push starting it all the way.
Gawd I was hoping NOT to stall it (didn't, but still had 3,000 miles to get back home). It was the next day when I discovered NO Triumph dealers in all Mexico at that time.

Crap. What am I doing wrong when it comes to posting images? I have been using straight html to embed the image in my post. A previous message that I posted worked just fine doing this, now it's not doing the deed. Any tips?

Oh...I did read the sticky on photo posting but that wasn't much help.

Thanks!

Good luck, though - we want to see those pics!

The Steamer is powerful. Makes me smile everytime I see it. Can't wait until next season, will have to get some side panniers by then. The Givi V35 looks nice, but I am leaning towards aluminium panniers. Anyone tried Zarges or D‰rr on the Steamer?

No...another convert to the dirt.  His is a '95.  It's neat seeing an earlier one close up...lots of little differences compared to my '96.  Stuff like the fairing panels have different screws, the eccentric adjusters are silver (a carry over from the silver swingarms of the early bikes?)...

We went off roading again yesterday, actually:

Got stuck on a nasty quad trail at one point...one of those trails that's so narrow and gnarly you're barely moving.  Killer on a big bike.  Took us about 20 minutes to go 50 feet.  The Tiger went over 3 times - I really felt for the guy because I've been there before...(not on that trail, but at that level of depression     )

Hey guys....
Fishnbiker brings a up great point...

There are ONLY a couple of Triumph dealers who really do carry parts and have salvage parts available....

If you find yourself in a real pinch for parts..... Wherever you are ........ get a hold of BAXTER CYCLE in Marne, Iowa  USA.... CALL THEM......  there is a real chance they have what you need and will get it out the same or next day ... UPS/FedEx, whatever. It's the real deal....
I'm just a friend and customer ....

The first one,

Then the Tiger flu H1050N885 really set in and the infection caught hold

Caspian underneath - to be restored

Just aquired with 86k miles on her,
If DAR sounds like a Ducati Monster with a really knackered slipper clutch, then she is suffering from that, which might explain the poor lights.
The side stand acts like a drunken sailor with a really slack pelvis, typical I believe? And the front end waves around like Vegas magicians wand with about the same effectiveness whether accelerating or braking.

I love her already, Oh and the Roadie is pretty amazing too  :D

Title:
Post by: abruzzi on May 04, 2009, 07:06:32 PM
I was going to say that the color was gorgeous.  I like deep silvers (don't know how to explain it, but some silvers are deep and others are shallow.)  Also, that sear looks non stock.  is it a Corbin?

Yeah it's almost a gun metal... beautiful.  That color and the tan are now my fav steamer colors.
Title: Silver Steamer
Post by: Sin_Tiger on May 06, 2009, 02:36:32 AM
coachgeo - > noted, I was trying to do what I thought was the right thing by not burdening the server with heaps of uploads.

I very much doubt the seat is a Corbin, no marking on it, the bike has been in Singapore since new and Corbin seats are rare and horrendously expensive here, also they have a reputation of only being worthwhile if you can get them tuned to suit you at the factory. More likely it's a recover by a local shop, there are so many here that recover at very reasonable prices. The sun takes it's toll on materials here.

C'mon people you're making me feel terribly guilty now. I admit it is a very nice colour and doesn't look out of place on the steamer. Don't know when it was done, neither does the previous owner, nor what the official colour designation is, somewhere between silver, gunmetal and RAF blue, might have been a Jag or even dare I say it BMW car colour.

I really like the original Caspian which is why I chose that for my Roadie (after Kildareman beat me to a real used bargain!) and my Vara is the same, bit of encouragement please :(
Title:
Post by: EvilBetty on May 06, 2009, 06:43:56 AM
If your a fan of the Caspian, then by all means have it restored that color.  For all I know the silver is just photogenic and may not look as cool in person.  But I will say I'm not usually a fan of the silver bikes, and this one caught my eye!

I have a couple of used parts I need to have painted to match my bike, but my friends in the paint business are trying to get me to paint the whole bike another color due to the cost of the OEM paint.  But the Lucifer Orange (by far the fastest and best looking color  8) ) has grown on my considerably.  Unless I decided to do a custom Union Jack job on the pannier or top case lid, I'll be buying the Standox LD paint eventually.
Title:
Post by: Mudhen on May 06, 2009, 10:43:52 AM
I'd be very careful with the silver.  Patrick's bike started out silver and looked what happened to that!

 :eusa_dance

Whatever you decide is of course fine with all of us here.  Just make sure you keep us informed and updated so we can rag on you either way!

I have been a dedicated lurker for this and the previous Triumphtiger.com, I have a 98 BRG Tiger with Thunderbike bars, full Givi set, the crappy centerstand (slowly being beveled, due to its low hanging design) Powerbronze tall windsreen, Scottoiler touring model, second replacement wheel, the first replacement was a wider wheel from a Girly, now I am using a 96 Triumph Trophy rear wheel. This bike is the most fun bike I've owned up to this point. Its not the fasted, best handling, prettiest, but I have logged over 70K miles on this and still havent had my fill.  :P (http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu3/bgt595/98%20Triumph%20Tiger/IMG_3747.jpg) (sorry my garage is a mess)

LOL......  yep there is a few Mogs up there in WA.  Otherwise.. most folk (in US) have not got a clue what a Unimog is.
"Made by Mercedes since 1951:  UNIversal-MOtor-Gerät", Gerät being the German word for machine or device. If an implement is available for a tractor.. Mogs got them too. Any specialized utility truck, fire truck, rescue, military, Expedition Camper, what ever.. Mogs do it better.

I had a parts delivery the other day...The Man delivered me a cylinder head gasket so I could get my Steamer back on the road.  Crap, I need a hack...

Thanks Mustang!!!

Getting my bike back on the road pushed me to finishing the Touratech GPS mount I got on ebay (for a GS):

And one with the rally screen on:

It's a tad bit too high, would have preferred it was tucked behind it a little more protected from the rain...but I'll use it that way for now.  If I ever get a modern GPS I'll probably redo it.

It looks great Mudhen. You should be able to read that fine when standing up, yes?

Here´s a couple of more Rocinante images, from a ride this weekend into the Swedish woods in Dalarna, with gravel roads in abundance.

You OK?  Matt paint? Painting the bike with some sparkly metallic rattle can paint offers low grade solvent abuse that acts as pain relief y'know...

Post by: JetdocX on July 12, 2010, 11:10:42 PM
Yeah, happened on the dirt going 15 maybe 20 mph.  Hit a big rock with the front in conjunction with a whoop.  Got crossed up around the same time as the tranny deciding to jump back to neutral.  Whacked it open to straighten her out and I only got noise.  Tossed me over, then the right muffler landed on my boot near the ankle.  I was wearing my stormtrooper boots so I didn't feel a thing.  Just a sore shoulder from where I landed and a sad, scraped up bike.

Incidentally, one of the other bikes I was with got a front pinch flat at the same location.  We figured the woods were telling us something, so we changed his tube, dusted ourselves off and headed back home.

Couple pics from a dirt ride this weekend:

Lots of water in this section, but a lot of fun because the bikes in front showed me the fun line:

HUGE water hole...swamped a 640 that tried the middle, unfortunately, going around the side had some big hidden rocks in the muddy water.  Drop #1 on the day:

For a brief moment I thought my little girl was going to crush me up against that little tree:

Well don't just lie there like that, get up!

On my way again:

2 drops on the day, no damage.  Just a lot of fun.   :thumbsup

lol...you need a hobby, dude.  I just wish it was a new 800 I was doing it to!

A couple guys had video cameras going...really shows what a lame section I dropped it on.  I knew there was a rock there from seeing others try it - think I must have psyched myself out on it, though.  Happened several times during the day - see a hard section and someone else struggling with it, then I'd freak out thinking it was tough but breeze through it (sort of).  Visualize success...work your own line...don't focus on their failure...

Tiger is right at the end:

The problem with a big bike like that is once she starts to go, it is pretty tough to keep her upright.  That is a lot of weight to try and catch.  That said, BRAVO for making it through there! :D

Post by: Red Lion on July 25, 2012, 06:20:11 PM
Hi folks! I have just purchased this '96 Steamer with the sole intention of seeing if ADV touring is a mode of travel that will suit us into the future. Our intention, if satisfied, is to fork-out for a brand new Tiger Explorer(1200cc) once we are sure that we will get bang for our bucks.
To start off we have just taken a bite-sized tour from Peachland, B.C., down into Washington state, and back on a loop. We centred our tour around Grand Coulee Dam. It was heaven!
We exited Canada at Oroville, and re-entered at Midway.
It was a little intimidating for me, as up until now I have only ever ridden dirtbikes on ..... dirt!
Title: Tigz in day-tour mode, Grand Coulee Dam

For dam-spotters out there; head out to Grand Coulee Dam now to see it in a historically rare full spill.

Post by: FoothillRyder on July 25, 2012, 06:48:51 PM
Nice pics Red Lion, and congrats on the Steamer. You may just find it has everything you need, so you can spend your money on traveling instead of buying the Explorer.

I have the big brother of that top box on my Steamer, had that same box on my Scrambler. Some look down on the 'cheap' JCW luggage; but frankly I had a good experience on the Scram, and so far so good on the Tiger.

Look forward to more!

Post by: Red Lion on July 25, 2012, 06:51:12 PM
This is up on the plateau above Grand Coulee, midway to Wilbur on the 174. Strangely enough, at a 'place' called "Bagdad Crossing", according to my camera GPS. The reason why we stopped is, well, ...... Tigz insisted! During the 1,000km trip it ran faultlessly, except for this stretch. It just cut out on us. We waited a few minutes, took some snaps, then restarted the bike. It fired up as if nothing had ever occurred! I need to look into this mystery glitch before we start doing longer tours, as I'm really not keen on getting stranded halfway to California, or beyond.
2 hours after this, Tigz started 'missing' for about 30 seconds whilst cruising, then picked herself up again to complete the last 300 km without a problem.
Thoughts, anyone?

Thanks, FoothillRyder, we are going to be looking into a new topbox as it happens. Also, you could be absolutely right about Tigz having everything I need for touring. My main concern is that she is getting pretty old at 96,000km, and I'm very concerned about reliability(check last post).
You can see more photo's of the 3-day tour on my Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/born_again/sets/72157630741914874/).

The route we took was:
Peachland S Hwy97(S) -- Omak SE 155 -- Coulee Dam S 155 Dry Falls --N 155 Coulee Dam -- SE 174 Wilbur -- N 21 Curlew -- NW Midway Border Xing -- W Hwy 3 Osoyoos -- N Hwy 97 -- Home

Does it act like it's running out of gas ?
when it does it while riding does switching to reserve mysteriously "fix-it"
sounds very similar to my wifes 95 ...........turns out it's the nylon filter sock on the petcock pipe in the tank . It collapses then cant suck fuel . take it off , toss it away .

there is a filter in the line where it enters the carb bank between #2 and #3 carb
Title:
Post by: FoothillRyder on July 25, 2012, 08:28:23 PM
Another possibility is a pinched vacuum (or vent) line to the fuel tank. My '97 Trophy did exactly the same thing once. It was a pinched vacuum line. If it happens again, try opening the fuel filler. If you hear a 'hiss' when it opens, you have a pinched vent line. Don't remember if the Tiger has a 'Prime' position on the fuel petcock (the Trophy does); but if it does, flip it to the Prime position and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have a pinched vacuum line (the Prime position would bypass the vacuum operated valve).

Thanks, Mustang, you've confirmed my suspicions. During the second incident I did in fact flip the petcock to RES, despite only just having filled up, and within 5 seconds or so she was purring again. Funny thing is, it looks to be a brand spanking petcock!
I have lurked in some of your invaluable posts, so I'm also mindful of the "stock coil issues", so I'm going to make sure I have/or get the one's that you swear by(forgotten the name; but will check).

Late Edit: Cheers, FoothillRyder, will check also.

To keep the thread on topic, here is an arty-farty snap:

Lovely pics.

Had almost exactly the same experience with mine, Filip to reserve and away she went. No rhyme nor reason to it, petcock was brand new, looked perfect every time it was taken out to check it. Stopped doing it on my last long run, a bit unnerving.

Wow! I really could do with one of those screens. On my Washington trip one of the main reasons for unscheduled stops was to clean bug guts from my visor. Was it effective?

Very effective. What surprised me was that there did not seem to be any buffeting added by the screen, in spite of its height. I'm only 5'11 or so, and I can see the pavement about 20' in front of the bike over the top of the screen.

For those not in the 'know', that little hill in the background has traditionally had daft idiots yomping all over it through no choice of their own. :icon_salut: Try it, if you don't mind breathing through your our-soul.

The terrain in that photo is all i want to tackle thanks, especially on those tyres. Did take it on some steeper stuff, met with a small bog at the top. Caught me by surprise, rode STRAIGHT thru,as soon as the front wheel dug in..down it went! Their not the easiest things to pick up eh ,but..this bike just seems to get better since i put the other set of carbs on. My last couple of rides I've done about 110 miles ea, averaged about 47-50mpg :icon_biggrin:

Llyn Brianne Dam. Spin after fitting new rear tyre/bearings. Give the rear wheel a coat of silver paint while wheel was off. Front next.

At last, took Stanley out for his shakedown ride today. -6 this morning with fresh snow off the road... but what the hey! So the tube to tubeless conversion seems to be working, the Scottoiler is oiling, and according to the newly fitted charging system monitor LED the charging system is up to snuff. Initial impressions: even though the po put stiffer springs in the front he still boings about on hard braking. The brakes are not stellar, but after all they do have a lot of mass to haul to a halt. I like riding with the front of my feet on the pegs so will have to get used to the fact the pillion peg support bracket is quite close. The gearbox is the smoothest I've used in many a year. Power is definitely more 'exciting' than my Thruxton was. The po re-jetted and made the exhausts louder; I like the rorty sound but am not from the "loud pipes save lives" school of thought.

Anyhoo, here he is

Well I've managed to get both through an MOT, the 95 with an advisory on the rear tyre only and the the 96 with no advisories but a slightly sticky front caliper (just needs a registration number now - please DVLA  :notworthy).

I'd forgotten just how good these machines are with a decent set of carbs, gave me a couple of  :bug_eye moments when I was less than gentle with the throttle.

But for the moment it's back to sleep for a couple of months while I try to survive darkest West Africa  :icon_scratch:

Since I got the 4x4 I have practically had to be dragged out of it. I love it. £1000 shogun has completely displaced my very expensive BMW...the beemer is more or less ornamental now. Only problem is that it takes up so much of the drive it hard to get the bike out... :bug_eye

Steamer looks nice with a 'fat' tyre(borrowed from my Super3)
I swapped wheels because since I fitted a 150 section Tourance Exp,I noticed the back end 'twitching' a lot on poor surfaces. Rear end is more stable since the change..maybe the bigger size Tourance is too big for the rim? I have a spare set of Daytona forks,so I plan on converting the front.
Title: Re: Ode to a Steamer.... [steamer pictures thread]
Post by: Sin_Tiger on June 08, 2014, 10:05:01 AM
I have read a few comments about T Exp not being the greatest but it may have more to do with the shape that the bigger carcass takes when shoehorned on a narrower rim.

Does look nice though  :pimp

I live in the Netherlands and been a Tiger addept for many years...

I've got a Steamer in Southern Spain (the Sandstorm coloured one) and the black JPS T400 I just finished building like this.

The others on the pics are friends who I've infected with the "Steamer virus" and so they bought Steamers ....and put them in Spain too for the good weather and faboulous riding :nap

I've previously had 2 blue ones,2 black ones, 1 red..... :bug_eye

Get your seat rebuilt and change the wheels to 3 spokes, you get a  choice of better brakes then!

it's the krylon fusion paint for plastic i believe . that shade or color is the only one in the fusion lineup that is that color so it wont be hard to match .

Thanks for the paint direction -- I'll look into it . . . The good thing is that if it's too much of a difference, I can always "rattle can" all the pieces to match. It's not that big of a job . . . :thumbsup

I don't think this bike has been pictured here before. It has been recently acquired from another owner that had it "dormant" under a tarp for 6 years in Arkansas and Florida. I'm happy to see the color choice is one that "stands out" from the others . . .

After three straight hours of hard rain on Wednesday halfway into Germany...

The way back was even worse yesterday. Side wind burst between 80 and 120km/h, pouring rain and the whole thing got so bad that I had to bring the speed down to 60km/h at some point. :(

Came back to hear there was a weather warning. And rightly so. It was downright scary at times...

Oh, and I don't just have the pannier mounts, I have some H&B luggage as well. I would love the aluminium panniers, but these cost me a third of a new alu pannier and store 46 liters. More than enough for me.  :icon_wink:

Oh, and I don't just have the pannier mounts, I have some H&B luggage as well. I would love the aluminium panniers, but these cost me a third of a new alu pannier and store 46 liters. More than enough for me.  :icon_wink:

No luck... '99 and newer only according to the the US distributor website, uk has some but not sure it would be cost affective to buy and ship to US

she takes the best parking spot everytime .
She earned it , she puts more miles on in a week than those vibrators do all summer .
her tiger has more mileage than all of them combined

I bought some ACF50... this is what it did - 19 months of mud, crud and flies destroyed - I just wanted to protect the bits which were suffering from year round use and outside storage.
I never clean my bikes, but this stuff has a bad influence on me, I even wiped over the all plastic bits :bug_eye
I suppose I'm impressed with it... it definately works as all the corroded bits have stopped looking corroded.  :icon_biggrin:

My bike and my Steamer friends are originallly Dutchies but a few also live there. Over the years I all got them on a Steamer after they once drove it !!! We parked them at a friends place in Spain and a few times a year we fly over because riding in Holland sucks.... :^_^

For the Steamer fans, spotted just now at Abergavenny. Owner is friends with Julian who I think is/was Chairhead?

I like the seat on the Steamer. I visited a ghost town up that way a good many years ago, I think the name was Bodie, very interesting place to see. Great scenery in Northern California.
