Here is my current route out to Banff National Park. I'm looking for a route home that would be different than this one. I've ridden Glacier, Yellowstone and I've gone through South Dakota plenty of times. I've got four to five days to return. Would a route through Canada headed East and then South to MN make any sense? Has anyone here ridden these areas and do you have any insight? I'm not a pavement dweller and I prefer small country roads and gravel. I've also considered a route south through MT, WY, CO and head north through KS and MO. I haven't calculated if I want to try to do that in five days yet...

I would have gone for the southern route through MTor ID, WY, CO. Not been on a bike there (wish to!) but traveld the area with my old stepside truck, very nice areas and small roads. Isnt north/east mostly just plains? _________________ -09 Triumph Tiger 1050 blazing orange

Yes, I'm looking at this southern route closer. I just realized that as soon as I get back I'm headed for the Indy MotoGP so I may only have four days which makes that route tough. I'll need to strategize as I don't want to cover ground I've already covered. Defeats the purpose of the ride for me. _________________ Life is hard. It's even harder if you're stupid. - John Wayne

If you have not seen this thread already, there area some fantastic pics of a cross-Canada ride.
I linked to page 4 since he started on the east side and came west.

I'd love to do a trip up through Glacier and across B.C sometime. The pics are spectacular.
Maybe if I can do the WA Ride-In this year I can go north and follow one of your routes back home.
Are you riding this now? _________________ 99 Tiger "Goldie"

If you want to know what a yellow 99 Tiger might look like in Banff and Glacier, I have a ride report here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=505646 _________________ '99 Tiger 885i |

I saw your report. That's one of the reasons its on my short list.
With our bikes all loaded up we almost look like bizzaro twins.
We have to get out there and represent our 885's.
Being out of work, I spend waaaaaaay too much time on the net. _________________ 99 Tiger "Goldie"

When are you going?

Mid August. I'm used to brutal Mosquitos here in Minnesota. Most often when people ask me questions like this I just roll my eyes. However, are we talking about Mosquitos of the Alaskan variety? I have been a little concerned about it so any info you can give me would be helpful if not a little disconcerting. Just keep in mind, I'm used the MN State Bird. _________________ Life is hard. If you're going to take a southern route, drop down into nebraska and run hwy 20 through the sandhills and cattle country. If you ride dirt at all, there is a place called the Cresent lake wildlife refuge its awesome(havn't been through there in about 10years though) or just take 20. then head south to Scottsbluff and ride up the scottsbluff monument-very tall platue.
From there you can head into wyo or go south to colo. got another great route into colo if interested. Haven't spent much time in wyo but I am sure there are some areas that are spectacular staying away from the busy Nat'l Parks.
Canada would be a nice trip however!!!!!

Excellent info. I'm confirming some finer details of the trip right now and I'm going to make my final decisions on the route soon. If I drop south I may be interested in your route info into CO.
Thanks!! _________________ Life is hard. It's even harder if you're stupid. - John Wayne

What about dropping south through the volcanoes St.Helens, Rainer to Crater lake, OR. Then turn east and go through the Tetons. Could even drop down into Utah for some red rocks. Beautiful scenery all through there. _________________ Tiger955i, 2002, 61000 miles.

Thanks! Great ideas. I'm still waiting to confirm some details but I would definitely consider that route. I'd hoped to get this done already but work has pulled me into it's abyss. _________________ Life is hard. It's even harder if you're stupid. - John Wayne
