I'm going to change the air filter in the next couple days, figure I'd go ahead and do the airbox mod while I'm there. Question is:

Is the airbox mod okay to perform on an othewise stock bike? I have no other mods right now. It does run really rich however. The fumes at idle are really bad. No smoke, just pungent smell.

Blimey this is a strange one,too be honest I see no point in doing it,unless as soon as you've done it your going to fit an aftermarket pipe and a fuel map to match, whats the point in trying to cram more air in if you can't get it out  :?

Clear the fault of smell at idle first then play about.

I may as well do it, as I'm gonna get blamed for it anyway.

Reasons for running rich at idle....

Small airleak in the exhaust upstream of the O2 sensor causing overfuelling, big airleak would affect more of the rev range (assuming its not of course).

IACV pipework air leaks, although this is usually accompanied by rough running and high tickover.

Air or engine temp sensor U/S, again though would usually affect more of the rev range (are you sure it doesn't?)

Fuel rail overpressure etc etc

Edit, forgot to mention wrong / corrupt map.....

Tolleyman, the bike does have the off road tune on it and was fitted with teh TOR exhaust previous to the ROTLE. Never had a problem with smell before. Hope this helps.

I did the airbox mod on a stock bike. No other mods before or since, other than raising the gearing.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. Increased power above 4000 rpm very noticed, as well as slightly better fuel mileage.

Downside I've yet to see in 10,000 miles.

K&N filter was installed at same time, as all that BikeBandit stock.
