Genting Highlands - short solo weekend ride / shakedown

Had to take a break from work, driving me nuts, still is

The Steamer was ready after a few more fixes and it was time for a decent shakedown run, not more excuses.

Supposed to meet up with a few from one my local groups but ended up being a mostly solo weekend and a good deal of that was recuperating from the Flu so no partying.

Genting is the nearest mountain area to Kuala Lumpur and I had never managed to get up there. Basically they have covered the whole top of the mountain in a concrete jungle of hotels, mock castles, casinos and kiddie funfairs, yech   But it's reputed to be an enjoyable ride and a popular Sunday rideout for local bikes.

Feeling like crap on the Sun morning I didn't head out till mid morning by which time I several hundred bikes, I kid you not, were headed down the mountain and I found out why as the road up was pretty chokka with cars and buses but still a lot of fun, passing Porches on the inside of bends while inhaling burning clutch fumes is great fun. Second gear all the way, yes it really is that steep although it's hard to see in the pics. Passed straight through the concrete jungle but couldn't get a decent vantage point, stopped for a breather and headed back down.

All fuelled up just after the border and ready to roll, where else but at the Tigermart  8)

Bit of rain on the way up to KL didn't slow me down a lot, new suit is deffinately not waterproof but my boots are, when they get water inside it 100% does not leak out

Took time out to visit the only Triumph dealer in the whole of peninsular Malaysia, very nice people.

Now this is a proper dealership, unlike the bike supermarket we have in Singapore.

"Please Santa I know it's a long way too Christmas but I have been very good and I don't know how much longer I can keep it up."

Is this TACKY enough for you, Blackpool without the culture.

The eagle eyed longer residents here may spot Stretch's old tank bag, spruced up a bit and still needs some mods for a good fit but looks right on the Steamer.

We always say it but it's true, it's a hell of a lot steeper than it looks from the pics, I am told in a monsoon downpour this is just a river, I can believe it.

And if your don't make the bend, there is a conveniently placed temple in the run off zone to burn some joss sticks for getting down the rest of the way safely.

Back at the Ranch

A little sustenance on the trip back, got to keep my chillies level up.

Back in Singapore and like me Tigger still had a smile on his face.

Just a bit short of 1k kms was a decent shakedown, didn't let me down thanks to my mechanic mostly but thanks also to all those that have helped and contributed with parts and advice to get her back nearer her former glory.

The light throttle poor carburation is almost gone after getting a few tankfulls through them, she is returning an average 45 mpg (UK) running mostly on the highway at around 140kph.

Only two issues, the new petcock (genuine) caused a stutter on several occasions cruising, switch to reserve all OK, switch back to main after a few km and it was fine also, need to have a look at that. The bike felt light and wandered on light throttle much above 140 kph, not so bad accelerating up to 190 when I chickened but real scarry when closed the throttle abruptly at anything above 120, not a tank slapper but a real speed wobble that had to be braked or accelerated to stabilise, more investigation required. I had messed around with tyre pressures before the trip as I could feel it wasn't quite right even at lower speeds if never a real concern.

Never missed a beat and was really very comfy, std bars but sculpted seat, perhaps a little more leg room but really splitting hairs, in a fit state of health I could ride it all day without discomfort. Box and brakes were perfect and the engine just did not seem to want to stop going.

All in all a happy Tigger  :D
I used to have long hair, took acid and went to hip joints. Now I long for hair, take antacid and need a new hip joint

Singapore look so bloody clean.  Really nice. Nice ride too.
Is it really an adventure bike if its wheels never see dirt?

I wish    not till late May for the TT.

Speaking of which, I think it's time to turn up the fire on the Scottish meet up now that the National has been decided and the numbers of the Tartan army are swelling

Malacca is a charming town with the diversity of influences and thankfully relatively unspoilt. Regular day / overnight trip, not a brilliant ride but a nice break from the regimentation and sterility that is Singapore, don't start me on the cleanliness issue

Since you are the 'absent friend' perhaps it would be an idea to post when you are home to give some dates to work around.  Then its just a matter of a quick pole and you're done.  well, except for location, campsite, pub etc....

I'd stay close to the bike too as the last poor sod came back out only to find his tyres left behind

Looks like you had a really good run. I didn't know that Greggs have a shop out there   when you're back in Scotland you should take a run out to the Village Bakers in Kilncadzow on the road to Peebles. They sell bridies that are so big they would feed a family of four or in my case just me.
