What you need is an oscilloscope. Check the wave output from the stator.
The charging on my 2001 Tiger (internal alternator no piggyback) failed a few weeks ago, and with only a multi-meter I was getting completely confusing info. All the readings of ohms from the stator said that all 3 phases were good.
5 seconds with a scope showed 15volts from 2 phases and 1 volt from the third.
Got a brand new alternator from these guys for £79 delivered... better than £325 from Triumph.

If the starter motor spins with  a good battery but not the engine you need a new starter sprag clutch

Found this by mustang. Seems as though I will be replacing the sprag clutch. Triumph don't sell the clutch sprag at over $400 (AUD) and the whole assembly for $250 something. Ouch.

Thanks Patman, I needed a good excuse to buy myself a scope and wave gene! Haha! <NERD>

Could you not find a lowish milage secondhand unit?
There are some parted out engines about, does seem strange how the sprag has suddenly given up the ghost they usually slip before failing. Could ship one over if stuck.

BTW the reason for asking about battery polarity is I once had a bike in for running problems after fitting a new battery, and it turned out to be the labelling on the battery was reversed!!
