Re your speeedometer question...
I also live in Canada and have a US spec bike. I solved my problem by installing a Sigma brand bicycle speedometer: http://sigmasport.com/en/produkte/bikecomputer/topline_2009_wired/bc509/?punkt=features
Works like a charm...
