Gearing up the steamer

I think its time to look into taller gearing on my 97. Id like to go 1 tooth bigger on the front sproket. Doing my daily commuter run Im turning between 5 and 5.5K rpm keeping up with traffic, Id sure like to bring it down to 4500 or so to ease the buzz and hopefully increase fuel economy. Any Suggestings? Does Triumph offer countershaft sprockets still.

I just got a 17/48 from Triumph last fall...so they offer some variation over stock.  I also just got a 53 tooth rear from Sprocket Specialists...hard anodized and hot slotted, baby!  I'm turning 5500 at 70mph...sucks on the commute.  But I'm learning how to wheelie - and it rips through the gears like there's no tomorrow!!



Here's the 48 vs 53.  The adjuster is right at the flip point...I don't know that I could get a 54 on there without dropping a link on the chain  :lol: :







Unfortunately, with the 18" rear wheel it's still too tall for off roading.  So I think I'm going with a 16 front.  After I chop up the sprocket cover, that is...



If you talk to Sprocket Specialists, you want the 'All Except' one.  When I called and told them what bike I had they said, 'we don't carry anything for that'.  But I asked around that that's what fit for the rear.

Yikes, thats spinning the poor thing. I think 1 tooth up front = 3 in back so you went almost 2 down. Otta be a wheelie monster. I dont recall what mods you have, but My 97 with the pipes and jetting mods will pull the front end up pretty easy now.  It seemed to get way better bottom end and midrange from the mods.  The single biggest improvement  was probably removal of the baffle or? in the center section of the exhaust. That had to be a pretty restrictive spot.
