Coolant Overflow Tank Cracked - Anyone Else?

I finally got around to some time to put the heated grips on my 06.  Once I pulled off the cockpit I found that where the hose on the coolant tank goes into the tank was cracked and no longer connected.  It's still kind of hanging on but obviously from the picture attached it would leak.

I'll contact the dealer as it's under warranty.  Anyone else have this problem?  Just curious.

Hey, your tank isn't cracked. That's an angle fitting that's broken. Mine was the same, and the two rubber hoses connected to my overflow reservoir were reversed. I replaced both plastic angle fittings for less than two dollars US each. (Watch out, some dealers [Foothill BMW/Triumph in Lakewood, Colorado] want about $5 for them.) When refitting the tubes, be certain that the drain hole is connected to the tube that drains down to your swing arm pivot; and the fill/suction hole is connected to your radiator filler neck. Blow through the tubes to find out.

If your tubes were reversed, and many are, you will have been losing coolant and now you must remove your gas tank and refill the system. Be sure to crack the air relief screw on the back side of the thermostat. Simply adding coolant to the overflow usually won't get any into the radiator, as pointed out in your owner's manual. If your tubes were not reversed, and the broken fitting is for fill/suction, you were losing coolant each time your engine got hot. Again, remove the gas tank and refill the system.

Plenty of threads on this topic, and the resultant overheating, on this forum. Do a search.

Good news then...I think.  I'll just have the dealer send me a new fitting and I'll check to see that they are not reversed.

Were they coming form the factory reversed or would it have been an incompetent mechanic?  Not enough miles on this one yet to think that service of some sort had been done.

Some came from the factory like that. Mine was outside the affected VIN rabge but still had the problem so I put it down to (yet more)  incompetent spannering at the dealer.

Those little fittings break every time you take the fairing off. I've given up and just pushed the tube through the hole in the tank. If it pisses coolant it'll just piss everywhere but who cares?

Is there anyway if supporting it so it doesn't break?  What is hitting it causing it to break?  Sounds like a pretty stupid design....

Happened here just as you described. Duct tape. Again, and again......

I was looking at mine today........I think I'm going to tie-wrap them together, and back, so they aren't flapping around loosely. Mine were not  broken, and were also hooked up properly!  :D

The dealer did not call me back today....when I receive the replacement part I'll pull it apart again once it's received.  I'm waiting on the Vario windshield yet and it would be nice to take care of that at the same time.  I'll let you know what I find.  There has to be a way to support it so it doesn't break.

Same with mine, it's cable tied at the moment but I must remember to replace it soon, thanks for the reminder.

I decided not to wait for the dealer as BikeBandit had them for .94 and I need some additional items so I ordered a couple and I'll wait to see if the dealer comes through.  I'll find out if they are worth doing future business with.

I do lots of business with Bike Bandit.  No complaints.

It takes a while for some Triumph parts to come in from across The Pond (if Triumph USA is out of stock), but a small dealer would have the same problem.

Well, with the winters here I've got plenty of time......

I've used them for quite a few of my bikes and they've been great.
