Not done it in the states, but it's very easy here in the UK. Just march into the red channel on your return and they are very easy to deal with.
Last time I came back from a film shoot with someone elses car and his goods (Limoge China). I drove into the red channel and the guy there said that as there were two of us and we were allowed £500 worth of gifts each, the extra £150 wasn't worth doing the paper work over and told us to carry on.
