With the battery and battery box out, I saw this behind the battery box and just in front of the rear shock. It is cylindrical with 2 rubber caps on it and then an unprotected part with wires that look like they should be protected.

Can you solve my mystery?

Looks like the starter solenoid.

Strange that there is no insulation/cover on an electrical part.  (At least the square part at the top)
