Title: Cruise Control! - Sold Out
Post by: Stretch on May 16, 2008, 11:07:39 PM
... on the cheap.

I bought a bunch of these Caterpillar 8M4991 o-rings... UV-resistant yellow silicone rubber, these puppies won't get hard and slick like rubber o-rings do.

Edit - Sold out, and I won't be buying any more, since I'm no longer riding.  Here's the link to where I got them...  http://www.dieselgaskets.com/prodwindow ... M4991&sc=N (http://www.dieselgaskets.com/prodwindow.php?item=8M4991&sc=N)

Great deal Stretch.  8)  I just ordered 4 via PP.

Either you stole these off a truck, or the local Cat dealer was trying to fund his retirement when I bought one at their parts depot last year.
Title:
Post by: Stretch on May 21, 2008, 09:11:54 PM
The Cat dealers have a markup to keep the lights on, pay employees, and all that jazz.  I'm just offering a public service to folks with great taste in motorcycles.

All I need is enough to reimburse me for the o-rings and the shipping that brought them here, the Paypal fees, and a stamp and envelope to send the fledgling o-rings out into the world.

Thanks for your order.  They'll be going out in tomorrow's mail.

So........ do I understand it right.  No addtional items needed, the ring just frictions on throttle grip?  If so, I assume they will fit a Steamer as well.
Title:
Post by: Stretch on June 06, 2008, 02:59:39 PM
The ring holds friction on the grip, and anchors itself (with friction) against the bar end.  They'll fit nearly anything, really.  If a bike doesn't have bar ends, the O-ring can fit in the gap between the grip and the throttle control housing.

thx

I'd like to chime in to say that my "cruise control" worked beautifully on our trip down to the Ride-In in West Virginia a few weeks back.

Definitely something only for the open road when no one is around you, but it's perfect for that. I got a bit nervous around cars and would "disable" it when they were around me.

What a life-saver(hand-saver?) though!

Thanks again for offering these up Stretch!

Glad to help.  My thanks to everyone for their interest in these.

There are still some left.   :spam4

Quote from: "tgrrdr"are those handguards from a GS? do you think they'd work on a steamer?

Yep, for the R1150GS.

Hmm...  I'm not sure about Steamer fitment.  I don't recall seeing any Steamer riders commenting on trying them out.

Come on over, you can try mine and see if they fit.   :friday

Yo Stretch, is your paypal set up to take credit cards?  I just used the last of my paypal cash to buy some other Tiger related junque.   8)   If not can you mail you a $5 bill for one of those condoms?  I don't need my Girly getting all preggers on me.
Title:
Post by: Stretch on July 11, 2008, 02:06:33 AM
Your Paypal account ought to be backed up with a credit card or bank account, so that purchases (with no cash in your Paypal account) come off that credit card or bank account.

If you want to snail-mail me cash, that'd be fine.  I'll PM you my address.

Oil or grease on the O-Ring and / or grip?  Give both parts a wipedown with a clean rag and alcohol, acetone, lacquer thinner, etc.

Stretch - you have paypal :D

I had one of these for my Dakar, but found that my aftermarket grips were a bit too soft for the o-ring to keep the throttle tube put.  I'm thinking the firmer heated grips on the Tiger will hold up much better.

Thanks Stretch!

Ok, I gotta ask. I got my ring and slipped it over the bar end of my steamer. Apparently the gap between the bar end and the throttle grip is too wide and it falls between with nothing to grip onto. Am I missing something here? Is there an adjustment I can make?
Title:
Post by: Stretch on August 12, 2009, 09:54:16 PM
I'm unfamiliar with the Steamer bar ends, sorry.  Drop a PM to Mustang.  He can field-strip a Steamer blindfolded.

On my previous Tiger which was a 98, I used the Yellow CAT o-ring before I put the NEP throttle lock on it.  I don't recall having to do anything special to it, and I know that it had the factory grips and bar ends on it.  You might try pulling the bar end off and see if you can stretch or slide the end of the grip out just a bit off of the sleeve.  If that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you other than you may need a larger diameter O-ring.

Jason

Post by: Stretch on August 13, 2009, 01:22:25 AM
This may not apply to a Steamer, but the Girly bar ends are two pieces, with a rubber isolator between the two.  The interior sleeve (that the bolt goes through) can be moved back and forth within the outer piece.

Try pressing the inner sleeve in or out to change the clearance between the bar end and grip.  Give it a squeeze with a C-clamp or in a vise.
