Title: Here we Go !
Post by: Mustang on August 03, 2009, 03:30:44 AM
Roger Daltrey is WRONG , there is a cure for the Summertime Blues .

It's called ROAD TRIP !

Day one

It's a bright sunny ,humid August morning when Jonny shows up packed and ready to roll at 9:30 am

Tiger is waiting to greet him packed and sporting some Givi's that I stole off Mrs. M's tigger
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2218.jpg)

let's roll..............first there are two rules
1. No Interstates only 2 lane (when possible, more on this later)
2. No Whining
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2220.jpg)
we ride on past the Ruger Firearm foundry, and thru little New England towns like this
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2222.jpg)

until we see the fog on the Green Mtns. of Vermont
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2225.jpg)

and welcome to Vermont
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2226.jpg)

if you are expecting any pics of Vermont here you will be disappointed as Vermont has twisty curvy roads and it's hard to take pics and ride too

and I live right next door so it don't impress me much anymore ...........

although the pic doesn't show it Jonny is admiring his new sunburn

into New York we roll .
The views look like this for awhile
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2229.jpg)

We stopped for Dinner at the 10 Pin Bar and Grill in Syracuse NY and after a bite to eat the waitress gave us directions to a great little bit of twisty heaven that included this little surprise

and we rode ....................

no pics here , just picture rolling hills and cow farms and a stench of Cow Shit :Topes  that will burn your nostrils for several hundred miles

and then we rode some more , hey wait a minute we're still riding and it's dark and we're still in NY state .
It's a long way when doing two lane from east to west .
After stopping at several Motel/Hotels in the Finger Lakes that don't have enuff brains to put on the no vacancy sign either that or they didn't like the way Jonny looked  :ImaPoser
we found a vintage 70's Travel Lodge that only cost an arm and a leg and didn't even have wifi

and Day 1 comes to an end . 450 miles of two lane WOOT!
Title: Day 2
Post by: Mustang on August 03, 2009, 04:05:43 AM
Day 2

We awoke to this today.............hoo fucking ray !

we stalled and generally screwed off until check out time and kept watchin the weather channel who assured us it would be lifted off and fair in an hour or so .............sure  it did .

Rain gear was donned and away we went no pics cuz the cameras were packed and it poured .

after about a half hour the sky cleared and the sun came out .......for about 5 minutes and then some more rain and that was the order of the day until around 3 pm when it quit raining and we bid adieu to NY and Pennsylvania and  into OHIO we go to take a break at this covered bridge , it's a rebuild only a couple years old .

Jonny thinks the Amish are out for world domination by the application of this all over the road surfaces even on the damn bridge .

should have seen what the two lane roads looked like in the pouring rain .........eek

found this in PA , ok I'mm a sucker for wall art in the form of murals
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/rocky%20mtn/100_2236.jpg)

also found some sculptures made out of street signs at a Pennsylvania DOT

and day 2 comes to an end at a super 8 in Cleveland after we violate the hell out of rule #1 and do 50 miles of slab to get on the west side of Cleveland so we won't have to deal with Monday mornin Rush Hour Traffic
and the real reason is that Cleveland traffic on a Sunday afternoon on US 322
was gonna take until midnight to get a room ...............

More to come ...............

here's a clue
since this is an EPIC August Adventure
it will involve harley's and dead presidents on the side of a mtn.
there was something about a Beartooth and a Red Lodge in Montana
there's the Devil and his Tower included in the trip
and a geyser that is quite faithful
and I think there is some salt in UTAH
and something about a 2 mile high best M/C road in Colorado .

Stay Tuned...............

DAY 3
Cleveland Ohio to Lowell Indiana

This is how you ROUGH it! :ImaPoser
my own bell boy complete with Triumph jacket  hehehe

The Shinko's are holding up good this shot shows 1500 miles of wear on the rear , not bad for $111 for the set . I only have one explanation for it
"DYNA-BEADS"

Honest Injun
it's US 20 not interstate even though it looked and felt like it . Traffic has to move thru and around cleveland somehow .

"Abner! ,come quick there is a strange man out in the field taking pictures" :ImaPoser

This was his photo subject ....a leftover cement silo from when times were easier and everything was Aquamarine .

I told Jonny=man 50 dollar bill for photographic proof he rode under one of these while it was hogging the road ..

Free electricity , I guess if the winds gonna blow you might as well put it to good use

This and the following pic pretty much sums up the day's ride . Don't blink you might miss something .......................nah go ahead you won't miss anything in fact if I could've figured how to stay upright I might have taken a nap  :sleepy1

throw in a church once in awhile and that's about how much the scenery changes

a 'rest' stop in a cornfield ,surprise ,surprise.

Jonny pulls  up beside me at a light and says " Hey , I invented a new game ! When I see Roadkill I check my odometer and we haven't been able to go a mile yet all day without seeing something squashed "
Now he's got me looking for roadkill , the bastard.

and that pretty much sums up Day 3

I know I know I'm a day behind

here's a clue it's not a whole lot different than today  :BangHead

hey mustang, i have a question for you.  Rather out of left field but... Early on in you trip you stopped by a bridge with a new wooden roof.  Why do bridges in the states have roofs like that?  Is there a reason or is it just because....  We don't have those in the UK and I've always wondered what would drive right thinking people to cover a bridge!?
Title:
Post by: coachgeo on August 07, 2009, 12:50:10 AM
Quote from: "nickcalne"...I've always wondered what would drive right thinking people to cover a bridge!?
That goes back to the horse and carriage days when 100% of everything was wood construction.  According to the quick little search I did on the subject... an uncovered wooden bridge getting weathered kept its life to less than ten years.  A covered bridge had a life span closer to 80 years.   Once they discovered the longevity of covered bridges... they became more prevelant.

That is one benefit of a covered bridge and the other popular theory is it kept the horses pulling the buggys would;nt get spooked

Anyone heard from them? Should we call out the search & rescue team (preferably the ones from Hooters, Mustang wouldn't stay lost from them!).
Hoping they are having a good time and just in an internet black hole somewhere.

Title: Day 4
Post by: Mustang on August 13, 2009, 02:07:51 AM
Ok Day 4 started just east of Chicago and although I wanted to hit the Superslab  like a High school boy with the homecoming queen on Prom night ,  we stayed on US 30 thru the urban sprawl of Chicago . Took over 4 hours to go 80 miles WTF

Here's the start to Route 66 , well near here............

we came up on the first Triumph we've seen since the trip started , a T100 Bonneville and if you look close at the name on the water tower it was in Hinckely Illinois . Kind of weird

day 4 was a lot of this construction for the American reinvestment and recovery act

and if you want to know what the rest of day 4 was like ....go back to the pic of the cornfields on day three and stare at it for hours on end .
Title: Day 5
Post by: Mustang on August 13, 2009, 04:27:46 AM
Day 5

Finally crossing the mighty Mississippi river it's a big one

Iowa is more cornfields but we did find a lot more windmill generators in this state ,like hundreds of them across the corn fields

can you spot the tiger in this pic ?

How do you know a town is coming up in Iowa ?

?You can see the water tower first ...................

and as day 5 comes to an end in Toledo Iowa , at least that what my super 8 motel reciept says , we are watching the clutch pushrod seal on the T-Bird starting to puke oil.............

No pics but we did meet up with a third rider , my little brother rode up from Cheyenne on his Bonnie to join us in Chadron Nebraska

DAY 9

Lost a rider last night . The oil Leak on the T-Bird was getting worse , so he turned the front wheel east and headed for Baxter's Cycle in Iowa to get a new pushrod seal .

The Day started with Beartooth Scenic Byway . At the summit it was cold , very cold and the roads were wet on the summit , but they also had some Black Ice, as my brother soon found out .
Didn't go down but the seat was stuck to his ass from the pucker factor  :ImaPoser

Last night the Bonnie needed new brake pads , the rear was down to steel on i side . From out of the magic Givi's come 1 set of new pads for the bonnie .

Actually they were spares for tigger , the left front pads for tigger are the same ones for the rear of the Bonnie

Hoofed it down US 93 into Nevada and hit I 80 to Wendover Utah for Speed Week , the fastest place on earth.

We had a room reserved at the Nugget Casino and we made them back in January b4 the casino realized it was for speed week so instead of $189 a night we got two nights for $127 ...........WOO HOO !

The racing is pretty boring for spectators ,and when things go wrong you can't see it as it happens when they are carrying the most speed at the 5 and 6 mile mark .

We spentall day tuesday on the salt and got cooked even with our Dollar store awning and chairs we bought just for the day ...........

here is little bro pretending to be a record setter

Title: Mustang in my backyard?
Post by: MontanaBBQ on August 13, 2009, 10:29:37 PM
So I'm rolling through Red Lodge last Saturday on my way to Jackson... loaded up with the family in our 4runner, camper in tow.  At the south end of town I pass a Steamer, a T-Bird, and a Bonnie headed the other way.  Could it be our famous Steamer Guru, Mr. Mustang?  Heck no... last time I checked this report he was out east riding covered bridges.  Now I see it was indeed the man, the myth, the legend.  In retrospect, I kick myself for not chasing them down to make introductions!  It's not everyday we have such a fine assortment of British iron in Red Lodge.

Great ride report!

Doug B.

Wow! Amazing pictures! The Salt Flats sure attract an interesting bunch of vehicles. I read in one of the mags about a guy who tows his Triumph (vintage road racer converted with full aerodyanmics) behind a 1950-something Rolls Royce.
Looks like a blast except for the oil puking (I remember you told me not to touch that part or it'd start leaking).
Good luck! AndyB, Nh.

Mustang,

Great Ride Report and Pics!!! Thanks for posting, it is always fun to follow along on these rides. How did the Shinkos end up performing when it was all said and done?

thanks,

The Shinko's are the best bang for the buck ......and I am convinced that the Dyna beads work , anyone who is a naysayer simply has not tried them , They work that good .

Here's the front tire at over 7000 miles and here is the rear at the same mileage , the rear took a hit on the center tread coming home all slab from cheyenne , did 2100 miles in 3 days .

They work very well in the rain , on dirt and even did good on the Black Ice on Beartooth , with the added benefit that they stick like glue to pavement doing high speed cornering with the pegs scraping ......did I mention they were only $111 for the set ? The rear will easily go another 2 k  and the front is still like new

After The Salt Flats we Headed out wednesday on I 80 east ( there isn't any other way ) and picked up US 40 in Park City and rode across the high dessert of Utah and Colorado ..it was HOT !

Honest I haven't had a drink since the saddlebag keg yesterday , but I was still seeing pink dinosaurs ...Vernal Utah .

Stopped in Craig Co for the night and then on Thursday Continued US 40 to Steamboat Springs and Rabbit Ear Pass , Picked up Colorado 14 here and if you ever get the chance ride it to Ft. Collins , simply wonderful high speed sweepers left and right thru the canyons . It was incredible !

This shot was after Rabbit ear pass and even though it doesn't look like Mtns. it was a valley in between them at 8500 feet .

Made it to Cheyenne  on Thursday night and you can stick a fork in this one it's done . Nothing exiting happened all the way home 2100 miles of superslab riding solo .
Well one bit of excitement , after wearing this decal for almost 20k

I finally got the ADV Rider salute from someone hanging out the window of their truck in Omaha (http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee47/2uoykcuf/emoticons/Ren.gif)
It was pretty comical , and I of course returned the salute .

And my favorite ol reliable Tigger 2 turned 62 k on the trip and didn't have one single hiccup or even use a drop of oil . It ran like the trooper it is  the entire time .
Although pulling into cleveland saturday night at 11 pm I noticed that the diesel like sounds were starting to get louder coming from the engine room .......I think I need to pull the alternator off and have a peek , I suspect I will find a broken bolt ..............

Good to hear as I have two sets in the basement (paid $190 delivered for all four tires from Chapparal Motorsports). I'll be mounting the first set this afternoon and picking up some dynabeads tomorrow.

Thanks for the update,

Well I just bought two new Avon's and a Dyna Bead kit.

Anyone installed the Dyna Bead valve cores on the Girly cast wheels?  Any problems there?

Unless I get real froggy I am going to take the tires and beads to the dealer to install.  Hoping they won't give me too much flack about it.
