Bought some bits from Ebay last week, guy said he was thinking of selling his Steamer, had a chat on the phone, not too far away from me, so with the bike trailer hitched up, off i go to have a look.
It`s a `94, 30,000 miles with all MOT certs to prove the mileage, sprag clutch and crank sensor replaced last year, valves and full service done last month, new Venom cans, Scottoiler, brand new Hepco Becker crash bars and new Hagon shock thrown in for me to fit.
Bikes pretty much as standard, few little marks here and there but it`s pretty tidy, and a lot better condition than my current one.
So now i have 2 full bikes, plus another minus engine in bits!
Plan is to make one really good one out of the 3, then sell all the leftovers
Here`s a few pics, i`ll put some more up in the daylight.

Got any extra pannier racks? :D
Sorry mate, i sold those last year to someone on here.
Can I ask you to measure the Hagon from eyelet to eyelet and the current spring length in site and let me know the length please.
Quote from: "BruKen"Can I ask you to measure the Hagon from eyelet to eyelet and the current spring length in site and let me know the length please.
I`ll do that in the morning for you.
Well Chaps, been out for a ride this afternoon.
Bike runs brilliantly, only problem is rear shock is well and truly had it, so fitting the Hagon is the first job on the list.
I fitted the baffles back into the Venoms as it way too loud, sounds pretty nice now, especially the popping on the over run.
The battery is on its way out, so will be ordering a new one shortly.
The chain rub block is on its limit, that can wait until i get my 3 spokes sorted, just trying to source some new brake discs for those, so will take the rear end out and have a grease up on the swing arm etc, then swap the wheels and my front end off my other one.
This one has the original Triumph handlebars, much more comfortable than the Renthals on my other one, also has longer mirrors, i can finally see behind me without moving my elbows.
All in all, well happy with it, just got to swap a few bits from my other one and a few little odds and sods to do.
Love the blue! And the Venoms look awesome.
Does it have the engine access cover the older steamers had but the newer ones don't? If it does, congrats: This bike will last 100 years because you don't have to split the cases to replace the starter's sprag clutch.
Very tidy find nontheless!
Don`t know about the access panel, have to have a closer look when i start swapping the bits over.
Can you tell by vin number etc?
it will be obvious if it has sprag access .............the cover is on the upper engine case directly behind the alternator
Yup, i have the access panel.
Started work on the new one tonight, removed the old shock.
Fitted the Hagon.
Lucky for me i did, when i went to undo the shock mount bolts, they were both loose!
A few other bolts here and there were loose, think the previous owner was a bit of a muppet!
Also found another problem, the front fairing/clock bracket has snapped where it bolts onto the headstock, luckily i have a spare, so thats another job for tomorrow.
Then its time to check the whole bike over for anything else thats loose or missing
On with the next problem!
Common fault as you all know, the fuel tap leaks.
Thanks to the info from ROB, i bought this a while ago, still have the Pingel tap i bought but that will be used on something else i have planned.
Here`s the new tap alongside the old one and part number.
Next on the list is to swap the wheels and front end, just waiting for the wheels and fork legs from the powder coaters, also doing my spare fairing frames, so that to do as well.
So just putting it back together as is to try out the Hagon and see if any other problems arise
Fuel tap replaced, no more leaks!
Then out today for a bit of a test run with the new Hagon fitted, much better than the standard shock, just got to try playing with the spring setting.
What's the impact of having a shorter tube on the new petcock? Oh, and CONGRATS on the sprag access (although I can't read the photo well enough to see the access cover  )
I presume its got less reserve...
Looking at the tubes, the new tap is roughly 2/3rds the size of the Steamer tap, i was going to measure them both but forgot before i fitted it
So it`s probably got 1/3rd less miles on reserve?
To be honest, i`m just happy to have cured the leaky tap with a fairly cheap fix!
And it`s not very often i ride it on reserve, i`m too old to be pushing this to the nearest fuel station

I don't understand how the tube length makes any difference. Seems like it's going in the wrong direction? Can someone explain it?
when you are on main the fuel goes thru the filter on the brass tube .when the level of the fuel gets to the same height as the tube you need to switch to reserve .
reserve setting gets the fuel thru the filter to the left of the pipe .
the shorter the pipe is the less gas you will have in the bottom of tank for reserve '
the outlet tube on the bottom vs the yammie tap out the right side makes no difference
Everything makes sense but it seems odd.
You'd think there would be a wall in the tank that only goes partially up from the bottom. One side of the wall would be main, the other would be reserve. You could mix them up if you tipped the bike over, but otherwise, no tubes would be required just a hole, one on one side of the wall, one on the other.
That's how I always thought main and reserve worked.
Things coming along slowly.
Got some bits back from the powdercoaters, front fairing and clock frames, sump guard and plate, Trophy fork bottoms and the old blue 3 spoke wheels that i fitted to my number 1 Steamer before i fitted the 6 spoke Trident wheels.

I`ve started work on the front wheel, replaced all the bearings and dust seals, just waiting for some new brake discs.
Rear wheel is next, bearings etc are here, and a new disc arrived this morning, along with all new bushes and seals for the forks.
Going to be a busy weekend in the workshop
ooo shiney bits. whered ya get ya powder coatin done ? i like the look of that silver ya got there. how much was that lot ? got everythin i need now for my swap over well, apart from yokes.
Local firm called Fentec doing the powdercoating, all the bits pictured plus yokes which i have to collect at the weekend cost me £100 cash.
Decided on the silver forks as i didn`t want too much black, and it sort of matches the swing arm.
So whats the story with your yokes?
ive got a set but cant remeber what there off of and as ther in england i cant go see what they look like. just missed a speed triple top yoke on ebay. waitin to hear back from rob to find out what yokes they are.
nice looking work. good job.

Does that price include blasting them first or did you get that done elsewhere?
Includes blasting as well.
To be honest, they are not up to show standard, but for the price, i`m happy.
I had to do a little cleaning up on a a few of the parts where they hadn`t masked up properly, but a few minutes with the dremmel is no problem.
A little more done today on the rear wheel.
New bearings, dust seals, new brake disc, new stainless polished disc bolts and some new stainless sprocket nuts.
New sprocket should be delivered next week, then time to get the tyres fitted. :)

I reckon the rear weighs less than half the original, supposed to last longer too.
Looks a lot better too
Using Legend TT yokes/triple trees on the front end conversion on this one, with help from ROB, the clock mount lugs get in the way of the cable routing, so i chopped them off and had them powdercoated.
When i`ve made sure they fit ok, i`m having them re done as the finish isn`t too good.
The yokes as they came

And back from the powdercoaters

Decided the wheels will look too black, so added a little colour!
Reckon they look better and will go well with the new paintjob i have planned 8)
And thats it for a couple of weeks, off on holiday in the morning :D
those wheels are lookin a bit yummy mate. cant wait to get mine done.

Thanks mate, can`t wait to get them fitted and get the bike painted and finished!
Back from holiday, new front brake discs were delivered, but wrong ones.
Was hoping to have the wheels fitted this week, but have to sort out discs on Monday when shop is open
Good news was both bikes fired right up after sitting for a couple of weeks.
New discs arrived today :D
All fitted with new stainless, polished rotor bolts (cost a fortune!)
Just need to arrange for the mobile tyre fitter to come and fit and balance the tyres.

Yup, good bloke :)
Got an early finish from work today, so off out into the garage.
Started to strip the front end off ready for the new forks and to see how bad the clock frame was broken, as the clocks and front fairing were jumping around a little over the bumps
Here`s what i found, frame was broken into three pieces, someone had attempted a "bodge", fitting a piece of metal rod into the hollow ends of two of the pieces.
I`ve got another frame ready to fit, freshly powdercoated.
Nearly there, everythings stripped off, just have to remove the wheel, yokes and forks in the morning.
Looking good 8)
A little more done over the weekend, as had other family things going on.
I built the Tiger stanchions into the Trophy lowers, and took apart an old pair of Daytona forks apart and used the top adjusters from those.
The damping adjuster screws do nothing, as the Daytona innards are totally different and too short, although the spring preload adjusters will work, just need to sort a spacer to fit between the spring and adjuster bottom inside the fork, but leaving that for now as i just want to get the forks on and the bike off the axle stands

A little more done.
Got the newly powdercoated front fairing frame fitted and got the yokes on, with new bearings and got the ignition switch fitted

Sorry Rybes but....................................
New fork gaiters arrived this morning so i could get the forks fitted.
The extra height with the Daytona fork top adjusters mean the bars are close to them, but i`ve got a set of 30mm risers to cure that to be fitted.
I`ve also fitted another top yoke under the bottom yoke, this is to fit the Acerbis high mudguard, as unlike the Steamer yoke, there`s no mounting holes in the bottom Legend TT yoke, easiest way i could think of.

Tyre fitter came this morning and fitted and balanced the tyres, so got stuck in and got the front wheel fitted.
Next on the list was to fit the clocks, the Legend TT top yoke clears the fairing brackets, but catches the plastic clock surround, so out with the Dremmel and start trimming!
You can see in the first pic how much i had to trim off, and then the clearance.

Got the clocks, new bar grips and both of the switch gear changed as the old ones were looking a little tired.
Also fitted the 5/8 brake master cylinder ready for the Trophy calipers.
Fitted the Acerbis to see if it fitted ok, i`m going to get another yoke to re fit it as it doesn`t sit back enough, and there`s no room on the current yoke to move the holes.
Fitted the front light cowel to see how high i could go with the mudguard.
Got all the electrics at the front all back together and all works ok.

Are you going to reposition the fusebox and chop the sprocket cover? Two jobs I want to do, interested in the different approaches.
:new_popcornsmiley
I had thought about the sprocket cover mod, but a lot of work seeing as probably would do an oil change once a year and sprockets will last maybe two as i don`t do a lot of high mileage, but maybe that will change once it`s finished, maybe a job for the future?
I had thought of moving the fuse box as i can see changing a fuse would be awkward where it is now.
Still got a lot of jobs that need doing first
Got the headers off today, cleaned up and sprayed them.
Cleaned up the underside of motor and changed the oil filter
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3137.jpg)
And with the original headers off, i finally got around to trying the 3-1 headers i bought a while ago.
Headers look nice, I am almost committed to getting mine ceramic coated so interested to hear how the paint works out, which paint did you use?
If you haven't already done it, have a look inside the headers at the inlet, I ground a considerable amount of excess weld out of there, hopefully it will help the gas flow!
I used high temp bbq paint from Homebase.
I used the same paint on a set of pipes i had on my Thunderace, that turned out ok.
im thinkin i mate have t pop down n see this ;)

I`m off out to the garage now, check your PM`s later, i maybe can help out with the forks
Little more done today.
Removed the rear wheel and swing arm and did a bit of cleaning up, this thing is covered in oil, grease, road grime and god knows what!
As i`ve found before on this one, more loose bolts, the swing arm pivot bolt was only finger tight!
Looking a little cleaner
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3147.jpg)
With the swing arm off, all the bearings etc were greased and lubed, and time for a new rub strip, rub block amd got the new chain fitted, as it was easier to fit the chain link in the chain on the bench and then fit it over the swing arm before fitting that back on :)

so we gunna get a vid to see how it sounds :D
Quote from: "rybes"so we gunna get a vid to see how it sounds :D
Probably sounds like yours as i have the same Venoms as you.
I`ll give it a go over the weekend, although i only have a vid on my normal camera, which eats batteries, so won`t be a long one
What winkers are you going to use? Hint, hint
Quote from: "Sin_Tiger"What winkers are you going to use? Hint, hint
I`ve just read your "wanted" add :D
I`ve just bought a new aftermarket set, i`ll send you a PM
A little more done today :)
Fixed the dodgy neutral light, the wire was broken, so soldered a new section of wire in.
Got the footrest assembly back on, having parts off the spare one powdercoated to fit on these.
Got the sump guard fitted.
And spent most of the afternoon trying to line up the Venom cans, and while i was at that end, fitted the new Givi rack kit, though still on the look out for some side rails.
The cans still need some bigger spacers at the back as they need spacing out at the back to fit the number plate., having some made up during the week hopefully.
Fitted the new indicators, need some adjustment as they touch the Givi side rails.

Get yourself back over here and get the Tiger done, you know it makes sense
looks like come the new year ill be back in england for a bit so it might happen
Might be up for a meet if you get the Steamer done :?:

Got my calipers stripped ready for a clean up, and a coat of paint.

Naah, these are the normal 4 pot Trophy calipers, Rybes wants the rarer 6 pot ones
Hey rf I hope your pistons are in better condition than the ones I took off mine last night!!! Previous owner told me he'd changed the brake pads - he's obviously squeezed the pistons back in with something big and ugly :?
I'm giving these guys a try as I have the seal kit already and only need pistons (which they sell individually - pattern parts):
http://www.triumphparts.gbr.cc/www.triu ... fo.php?p=1 (http://www.triumphparts.gbr.cc/www.triumphparts.gbr.cc/info.php?p=1)
I say 'only' need the pistons - the brake pad pin cover screws were missing as was one of the pad springs and I'm going to replace the banjo bolts and washers while I'm at it.

No compromise with brakes
Hey Sin
I've used pattern pistons previously with no issues but I do take your point :)
'kin 'ell how did they manage that!!
I'd like to just say 'brute force and ignorance' but I can't do it without f***ing swearing :D
Thankfully, my pistons are in pretty good shape, just gonna give them a polish when i get around to rebuilding the calipers.
Yours look a bit ropey
I`ve got a good complete front brake set up to sell shortly if you need them, let me know, or i might have told you already
I may be after them if I find he managed to stuff the calipers too when he did that to the pistons! Any idea how much you'd want for them?
Quote from: "TigerTastic"I may be after them if I find he managed to stuff the calipers too when he did that to the pistons! Any idea how much you'd want for them?
I`ll PM you :)
Quote from: "rf9rider".....Yours look a bit ropey
A masterful piece of understatement sir!
Postman finally delivered all the bits for the front calipers, new pads, seals, red rubber grease and some stainless pad pins.
Pistons all cleaned and polished.
Next job is to give the calipers a few coats of paint. :)
Calipers sprayed with 5 coats of Hammerite satin black.
Due to the cold weather, they are currently sitting in front of the radiator in the front room, much to Mrs RF`s annoyance
Will let them dry off until the weekend, then i can rebuild and fit them hopefully.

Cheers mate :)
No relative i know of works for them, why you ask?
Calipers dried out, so rebuilt them with new seals, new stainless bolts, new stainless bleed nipples and finally got the Goodrich hoses fitted i bought a few months ago.
The eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted a cable guide bracket hanging off the left side hose, that needs fixing to the mudguard, fitted one the other side for the brake hose and speedo cable.
New pads to fit and then needs bleeding.

Thanks mate, i have Emailed and PM`ed you on here.
Just awaiting a reply
Not happy with the routing of the front brake lines.
They should go forward from the caliper, although i`ve just realised the fittings are different between the Tiger and Trophy calipers, i needed the Trophy ones, which i think are 45 degree, as the current fittings catch the caliper mount on the forks.
Don`t know whether to try and "mod" these or get some more lines with the correct fittings.
Anyone tried bending stainless steel fittings?
You know ehe answer to that. No compromise where brakes are concerned :)
Quote from: "Bixxer Bob"You know ehe answer to that. No compromise where brakes are concerned :)
Yup, think i`ll have to get some Tiger lines with 45 degree fittings on.
More expense
dont buy the whole line. gto an get jus the ends. there a compression fittin n real easy to fit :D
Quote from: "rybes"dont buy the whole line. gto an get jus the ends. there a compression fittin n real easy to fit :D
Good idea, was just looking on their site, looks like an easy swap
If it goes wrong, i know who to blame...............
oh cheers  i think to save meself from that fate, ill make a pictoral instruction manual on how to do it. then if it goes wrong. well, aint my fault
Had a quick look for fittings, only one place shows a price, £17 for each fitting
Didn`t realise stainless steel was so expensive
Have to do a bit more searching
Well, bit the bullet and ordered some 45 degree fittings for the brake hoses.
Finally got round to moving the fuse box, just need to make sure its as far back as possible for the seat to fit, but allowing yourself room to remove the top.

Getting there slowly mate :)
Just need to make up some exhaust hanger brackets, Bixer Bob has made me some spacers, he`s delivering them tomorrow.
Need to sort out the rear brake, needs some parts powdercoating before i can do that job.
Sending the seat off to have it rebuilt Corbin style.
Carbs to remove and clean, valve check to do, get the spare panels and tank resprayed and it`s about done
not much at all then really
Quote from: "rybes"not much at all then really
Naaah, not really.
Done most of the donkey work, mostly cosmetic now.
Still got to clean up Steamer 1 ready to sell it.
Let me know if you are interested in selling the engine guards.
Thanks
Quote from: "intotheabis"Let me know if you are interested in selling the engine guards.

I think you`re number 5 on the waiting list for the crash bars mate!
And speaking of the crash bars, here`s what i did today..................
Fitted them!
Pretty straightforward, although i had to elongate the bolt hole where they fit onto the right hand footrest hanger.
Crap pics, need new batteries i think
And finally for today, had a visitor bearing gifts :D
Bixer Bob turned up on his Tiger to deliver some spacers he made up for me, for the exhaust hanger brackets i`m having to make.
Thanks mate, appreciate it, hope you got home ok and didn`t get TOO cold
Nah, I was dressed for it. Roads were very slippery though, I was glad to get back in one piece.
Got home just after dark. The tweeks I did to my Girly lights to try to illuminate more than the 6 feet in front of the wheel only served to make her cross-eyed. Effing Haynes manual has the adjusters labelled wrong :BangHead
Thanks for the lock. As I explained, if I can source the parts through the trade, I can then offer a refurb service .
Might be your camera sensor is picking up on the shiney white mudguard
Quote from: "Sin_Tiger"Might be your camera sensor is picking up on the shiney white mudguard
Don`t know mate, battery indicator was right down.
Think i`ll stick to taking pics during daylight hours
Not much to report, new pads and stainless brake pins are fitted, decided against the new fittings for the Goodridge hoses, those have been sold, and i`ve ordered some Venhill front lines instead, should be here at the end of the week.
Picking up the exhaust brackets i`m having cut out on Tuesday. :)
motd by the end of the week too
Quote from: "rybes"motd by the end of the week too

Might be end of next week though if my parts arrive
Carbs are off, all nice and clean, they weren`t too bad inside.
One of the carb tops has a crack in it, so will be visiting my local breaker to see if he has a spare.
Just collected exhaust brackets, just got to drill the mounting holes and take them back and have the spacers welded on.
you have a local breaker ? where is it ?
get off ya pc n go drill the holes n get em welded back on. post up a pic of the brakets when there done wont ya :D

Not a breaker as such, but there`s a shop called Bikes`nTrikes keep a lot of secondhand spares, i always buy my oils and stuff from there, and they do all my bike MOT`s.
I`ll take a few pics, as always!
Carbs stripped, cleaned and almost back together, just looking for another carb top as one is cracked where the little o ring is seated.
After fitting the Venom cans, i couldn`t fit them to the frame with the supplied spacers as lifting the end cans was causing the link pipes to catch on the rear footrests.
So i had some brackets cut out of 3mm ally, roughly the shape i wanted.
Drilled the mounting holes, and problem solved.
Another big thank you to Bixer Bob who made the spacers for me.
To finish the job, i`m re shaping the brackets, having the spacers welded to the brackets and then powdercoated black, along with a few other things. :D

Quote from: "rybes"havin looked at mine now for over a year, your exhausts look wrong to me  are ya gunna be takin it to a rollin road to get it jetted right when its done ?
What do you mean they look wrong?
Although i must admit, other Tigers i`ve seen on here with the Venoms, they look like they have fitted straight to the frame, maybe my link pipes are different, as i have struggled to get them to line up so they look the same each side, they came fitted to the bike, it ran great before i started work on it, when i stripped and cleaned the carbs, jets were standard size, so i`ll leave it for now, see how it runs over the summer.
I thought I'd won a watch buying a set off Motad from the fleebay shop. Carted them out to Singaore, got the bike back together, tried to fit them and found they stuck put way past the number plate :( major fail as it's too late to send them back. Must make the effort to contact them and find out what they actually are, not what they were advertised as that's for sure
yes I was never happy with the way they fitted on mine.. they came off and went back into the box at one point ready to be sent back :) ended up with a longer bolt and packing them out with spacers to get them anywhere near ok, RF9's solution looks a lot neater :) 8)
Not just mine then!
Looking closer at mine, i`ve noticed the link pipes are not the same as each other, one has a slight kink in it, presumably to miss the swing arm, the other is straight?
The hanger bracket bolts fitted into an extra threaded lug on the rack that was fitted, now i`ve fitted the Givi, i had to make the bracket.
I`m thinking of swapping them over to Steamer number 1, and using the original end cans off that, until i get the 3-1 sorted

only reason i said that mate is cos im used to seein how mine fit my bike. same kinda thing if tescos changed the red n blue of their signs to orange and yella. itd jus look odd cos ya used to red n blue ;)
i had probs with mine too and done the same as neil did. never thought of lowerin em down like you done. my link pipes are differnt each side too. i guessed like you it was jus to help clearance issues. if ya want, i could bring mine over one day so ya could see how it goes on mine ?
Thanks for the offer Rybes, i`ll keep ya posted, though i should be able to jiggle the downpipes to get them lined up
Postman has been, pics later as always
Venhill front brake lines and stainless fittings arrived.
These are better, in my opinion, than the Goodridge as they have bolt on fittings, so the cable can be routed better with no twisting.

Nearly done as much as i can, just the paintjob to sort out on the spare bodywork.
Doing this has given me a few more ideas as to what i want on the next one i do
Thats going to be a complete rebuild from the bare frame up, as i still have a spare frame and a few bits and pieces to start off with.
The next one  8)

Looking at keyless ignition for the next one :P
Fiddled about lining up the exhaust cans today, finally done although two of the clamps broke, so new ones ordered.
Fitted the new fuel tap, no more leaks.
Got the mounting brackets re-shaped, off to the welders in the week, then a box of bits to get powdercoated.
Big thanks to Bruken, who sent me a carb top, arrived this morning, cheers mate :D
One of the carb diaphragms won`t reseat into the groove, it`s either stretched somehow, or was the wrong one, never seen anything like that before, so ordered a new one.
Carb to engine rubbers are badly cracked, so new ones on order, surprised how well it ran before i started work on it!
So, awaiting parts again
Progressing slowly
Spacers welded onto the exhaust hanger brackets, need a clean up and off to the powdercoaters next week.

Not a lot to report, as spent most of the weekend working on my truck, un-seizing a brake caliper, not fun in this freezing weather
Anyhow, parts arrived, carb rubbers and clips, new plugs, new diaphragm and o-ring, and some new exhaust clamps as the original Venom ones seem to made from cheese
Gave the carbs another clean, fitted the new diaphragm and o-ring, and replaced the floatbowl and carb top screws for stainless cap heads.

Forgot to order another vacuum cap and clip, as this is where the Scottoiler connected, now removed and sold on
Although i`ll get by with a bleed nipple rubber until i get a new one ordered.
Waiting for parts again
Fitted the new carb rubbers, vacuum cap and diaphragm, all back together, runs a little better, but still not right :(
Runs ok with choke on, but bogs down with choke off with a little throttle, runs a little better with both snorkels covered :?
So ordered more parts, complete seal kit for the carbs.

Guess what i`m doing tomorrow?

cleaning the pilot jet circuit and pouring sea foam gas treatment in the tank is what I'd be doing ................................

Yup, cleaned the carbs twice already, guess i missed something.
Don`t think we can get seafoam in the UK, although i`ll try some Redex in the tank.
Funny thing is, it ran fine before i started work on it, all i`ve done around the carbs is remove the Scottoiler vacuum pipe, then it stood for a couple of weeks before i started it again. :?

Cheers Rob, saved me looking
Mustang, the link is working now :)
it works great , I just dumped 1/3 of a can in tigger three two days ago ........bike started and would idle eventually but I knew one or more carbs wasn't right .
Dumped in some sea foam took er for a 30 mile run and presto chango
hello kitty , smooth as a babys bottom .
tigger three had only been laid up for december and january , it doesnt take our crap ethanol blended gas stateside very long to gum up the pilot jets .
the sea foam keeps me from pulling carbs on all the tiggers every year .
sometimes it takes two or three days for em to come around , but it does work .
Success at last!
Carbs off again, stripped and cleaned, rechecked the float heights, fitted all the new o-rings and bowl seal, running great again :D
Another little job done, front brakes bled, although had a slight problem.
The stainless bleed nipples were no good, couldn`t get the brakes to bleed properly, so replaced with the original nipples, and all is good.
The stainless nipples have a different end on where they sit in the caliper, the taper is the same, but the end is square, where as the originals have a pointed end, so i guess the stainless ones weren`t seating properly
Got a few more bits in the box ready for the powdercoaters on Monday morning.
And had another visitor to pick up some bits, Phil, TigerTastic, came to pick up the original Tiger front calipers :)
And a very grateful Phil he is too! Thanks for those mate, much appreciated. The bike's looking sweet, even better in real life than in the pics.

Not much progress to report, changed all the switchgear screws for stainless cap heads.
Ordered a few things from Ebay, and waiting for stuff from the powdercoaters, should be here by the end of the week.
Been giving Steamer 1 a clean and checkover, ready for sale soon
Postman has been :)

Spare clock bracket is at the powdercoaters, which should hopefully be ready in the morning, along with a few other bits.

Cheers mate, its 25 degrees here, and cheap beer!
That wasnt for sale when i was looking :?
I`m back from hols
Just got to check with neighbour to see if any parcels arrived while i was away, so expect a little more drivel soon.........
Couple more jobs done.
Daytona indicators fitted on the front
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3419.jpg)
Got the rear brake fitted, underslung from a Trophy, torque arm from a Honda VF1000, looks a lot better than the original i think.
Just need to order a red Venhill brake line.
Finally got around to fitting the front levers, Chinese cheapies!
Original handguards need modding, the adjuster lever catches.
Good luck with modding the handguards. I had a go and couldn`t get it to work acceptably. By the time I got the clearance the things would not clamp tight and just flapped about. I ended up binning them and spraying up an old set of Acerbis guards. They look better anyway.
Make sure the little nuts and bolts are done up tight on the levers. They were hand tight on mine!

I did think about getting some aftermarket guards, what you got on yours?
Mine are this type
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acerbis-Rally ... 4ab52a879e (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acerbis-Rally-Pro-hand-Guards-handguards-ktm-orange-inc-alloy-fitting-kit-enduro-/320867043230?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4ab52a879e)
They were white and had been fitted to my now departed XTZ660. I have sprayed them black and they lookl pretty good. You will have to cut the levers to get them to fit. There is a little notch in the levers. That is where I cut them.
Pop in and take a look if you are passing :D

:iagree A Mate got a set for me and fitted them while I was away, never thought to check the screws and within 100km I had one extremely shortie brake lever
If you haven't already done it, I suggest you take the reflectors off now and clean out the inside of the lens and the reflector surface with some alcohol based cleaner, you will be surprised at the muck that's in there.

Doing the headlights now, had to take them off to fit some HID bulbs i got coming :)
A bit more done, as spent most of the day boxing all my spares up ready for the lucky highest bidder!
Got the spiral wrap fitted over the brake lines, bit of protection to stop them rubbing on the frame
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3461.jpg)
Got the rear brake finished, new Venhill line with stainless fittings, new pads and bled through.
Starting to sort out my spare body work, fitted the Pingel tap i bought a year ago to the spare tank.
Adaptor plate on first
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3439.jpg)
Then the tap screws into the plate
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3448.jpg)
All done, leaving it overnight for the hylomar to go off, then fill up and check for leaks
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3463.jpg)
And finally for today, fitted the rear sidepanels as i was sorting out the bodywork.
Slowly coming together
Tanks done, no leaks :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3472.jpg)
Just got to fit the rest of bodywork to make sure it all lines up and fits then off for the new paint.

A little more done today.
Got all the panels on, holes line up, so ready for the paint job, just need a little more cash

And i went for a drive today to see Tigertastic, who i did a deal with before he sold his Tiger.
Been looking for a year or so for some to come up for sale.
Never got a cup of tea, but came away with these................

Cheers Phil :D
That looks awesome. What colours you going to do her in? I've just about finished a paint job of my own in pearlescense white.... never again. White is a right bastid to work with.
Quote from: "BruKen"That looks awesome. What colours you going to do her in? I've just about finished a paint job of my own in pearlescense white.... never again. White is a right bastid to work with.
Errrr.......................................white!
Don`t fancy painting mine then? :)
I did paint my last bike white, rattle can job, came out alright, what`s the problem with the white?
A pure white is not so exciting so it needs a slight tint or in my case pearlescence. But its very susceptible to hue changes. Mix the paint once and enough for the whole job. That goes for any pearlescence coat too. The problem begins when working the coat. Even flatting with water paper can dye the white with blue stains. Masking tape stains. News paper ink blanking stains, finger prints. You name it, the moment you spray, everything is a contaminant. Then comes the clear coat. Every spec of dust or fibre caught in the spray when laying it down becomes painfully obvious against the white basecoat. Any imperfection in your prep is highlighted with white. IMO, its the hardest colour I have ever worked with. I finished mine today
(http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t236/brucekennedy/utf-8BSU1BRzAzNzYuanBn.jpg)
You going to use a rattlecan? You are brave. If you remove the decals and flatt the surface, yes I will paint yours. It will take me a couple weeks though, longer if you require multiple colours. The paint is pricey though and will cost about 100 quid for a primer, two colour coats and a clear coat half litre each.
No, not using rattle cans on this one, i did my Thunderace with them.
Only kidding about the paintjob, got someone in mind for that, thanks for the offer though. :)
Spoke to the sandbag last night, packing up the seat today, the plastics just arrived and she sent my Roadie in for it's MoT. Shes great lass 8)
Thanks Niall, will let you know when the seat arrives :)
Givi rails have been powder coated, so fitted them on tonight.
Made a start on sorting some wiring to fit a voltmeter in place of the clock.
Found the wires i need to tap in to, more to follow...............
Quote from: "NeilD"I presume its got less reserve...
I did this replacement not too long ago. You have significantly less reserve. On mine, I have maybe 12 miles on reserve at 35mpg. And that is running on fumes downhill with a tailwind. At some point I am going to extend the main pipe to increase the reserve.

Not a lot on reserve then, i`ve never let the fuel get that low, so thats good to know.
Little more done tonight.
New waterproof plug arrived, so made up the wiring for the voltmeter.
Instructions said to use there "special tool" which you have to buy, but i got by with some long nose pliers and my soldering iron :)
Ends crimped and soldered...........

And the finished job.
Tested and working on the bike.
Finish this off tomorrow :)

Not a lot to do now, a few little odds and ends, mainly cosmetic.
Hoping to take it for MOT next week, then get the panels off to the painters, so should be all done in a couple of weeks :)
Got all the wiring sorted, fitted an inline fuse, all soldered, heat shrinked and taped up for good measure
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3514.jpg)
All done
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3515.jpg)
All tested and working, here`s how it looks with the voltmeter in place of the clock
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3525.jpg)
is there any reason you decided to fit a voltmeter or did you just fancy a change from a clock ?
Quote from: "rybes"is there any reason you decided to fit a voltmeter or did you just fancy a change from a clock ?
The clock is permanently live, probably doesn`t use a lot of power, but might help keep the battery up if i leave it standing for a while, plus i think the voltmeter looks better as it matches the other clocks, and might give a bit of advance warning of a low battery so as to not damage the sprag clutch :)
Busy day, first off, fitted the new Venhill clutch line, clutch bled, all fine and working
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3560.jpg)
Next job was to fit a new hugger i ordered a while ago.
Turned out i ordered the wrong one, it fouls on the bracket on the swing arm where the rear brake torque arm bolts, so out with the dremmel
Next thing was theres no top mount hole for the hugger on the right side, so marked out where i wanted the hole, drilled a 10mm hole for a rivnut.
Installing the rivnut
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3538.jpg)
Job done, handy tool, cheapy off Ebay

i really dont like you. now i seen that underslung torque arm and the fact the hugger looks a lot neater with it, i want one :(

Straight swap for the original brake set up, so it`s an easy mod mate :)
apart from the vfr torque arm what caliper n hanger did you use or can ya get away with just swingin the hanger round ?
Got mine from a Trophy, you need the hanger too as its different to the original, the off set is different, it won`t line up with the disc.
Seat's on the way :D
Quote from: "Sin_Tiger"Seat's on the way :D
Thanks Niall :D
All done, few minor niggles to sort out.
Been out for a test ride this afternoon, all is well.
Found the spare tank was leaking around the tap,(more to come on that) so borrowed the tank off Steamer 1 for a few days while i get it MOT`ed.
Heres what i started with...........
Here`s how she looks now, just the paint job to come

:pottytrain2
seriously tho mate. thats lookin proper nice 8) youve made a tiger look chunkier than they are :thumbsup cant wait to see ya new paintwork on it.
Cheers mate, just got to sort out the leaky tank, get it MOT`ed and i can get it painted.
Then i can start riding instead of working on it
Started on the tank repair.
Seems the previous owner made the tap hole bigger for some unknown reason, so when i fitted the Pingel tap, there wasn`t enough plastic between the hole and the edge to get a decent seal.
Rubbed down the area around the tap..........
So out with the Araldite which is supposed to be petrol resistant, a good coat on each surface, then bolted the Pingel adaptor plate to the tank............
Leaving it for 24 hours to go off, then try again
Tank repair didn`t work, don`t think the araldite was suitable as it didn`t stick to the plastic very well.
Going to try some JB weld when it arrives.
If that doesn`t work i`ll be looking for another tank!
why not just make a wider adapter plate and use an oring for a seal .
less chance of a leak that way than relying on expoxy (JB Weld) to seal it
Quote from: "Mustang"why not just make a wider adapter plate and use an oring for a seal .

It`s not so much the width of the adaptor plate, it`s the size of the hole that`s the problem, there`s only a couple of mm between the edge of the hole and the end of the face where the plate mounts on.
I suppose i could try the Pingel plate and an o ring around the hole, with a bit of Hylomar to help seal it?
Put a thick coat of paint over the epoxy to help seal it.
I`ve ordered some o rings, so next plan is to build up the side of the mounting area with jb weld to give the plate a bit more area to sit on, then use the o rings under the plate, and use a bit of hylomar to help seal things and see what happens
what length did your brake lines end up bein and what ends did ya use in the end ? ive looked throo ya thread but cant seem to find out what it was cos i thought yad said on here. praps im jus bein blind but i cant find it

I got mine from Venhill, you buy the lines and fittings separate, the lines were 1100mm long, and used stainless fittings which screw onto the lines, used 1 straight and 1 20 degree fitting for the lever end, and used 2 45 degree fittings for caliper end.
Got them from here mate
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/uptheshop?_trksid=p4340.l2563 (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/uptheshop?_trksid=p4340.l2563)
I got the Hel stainless banjo bolts off Ebay as i didn`t like the Venhill ones which have a allen key fitting :)
Good news.
Bike passed MOT today with only an advisory about wear on the rear brake lever pivot pin.
Now just the paint to sort :D
nice one cheers RF 8) how chuft are ya now ya got n mot. pickin my bits up tmora :D
No probs.
Well pleased with the bike, swapped my insurance over, just got to tax it and i`ll be out on it at the weekend and put some miles on it :D
A bit more done today, finally sorted the leaky tap, a simple o ring cured that.
So, fairings off and spare tank on
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3639.jpg)
Pingel fitted, i screwed it into the adaptor plate using Loctite 577 which is petrol resistant, then bolted the whole lot into the tank using the o ring around the hole to seal it
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3635.jpg)
Using the TT top yoke, the bar mounts are about an inch further forward than the original, so ordered a set of Rox risers a few weeks ago, they turned up yesterday, so fitted them while i had the tank off, a lot more comfortable now and be able to fit some handguards on without catching the fairings 8)
All road legal now :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3652.jpg)
Just to add about the Pingel tap, while i was checking for leaks, i drained it with the tap on, then switched to reserve and measured the amount.
You only have around 1 litre, just under 1/4 uk gallon on reserve.
Better keep an eye out on the mileage then
a litre  looks like youll be usin the fuel light to top up on then
Quote from: "rybes"a litre  looks like youll be usin the fuel light to top up on then
Yup, i checked it twice, only a litre left on reserve.
Think it`s about the same as the Yamaha tap that i used on Steamer 1.
I`ll have to check the low level fuel light works or keep a close eye on the mileage
Mine worked during the rebuild but hasn't worked since
All back together, as spent most of today tweeking the front fairing bracket, all the front fairings line up now, so i`m taking it to the painters during the week to let him have a look, as he`s only seen it with a good tank on, here`s whats in store for him with my spare tank
Its not that bad, looks like someones had a go at it with coarse sandpaper, and the paints down to the bare plastic in a couple of places........................at least it doesn`t leak now :D
Finally fitted the new airbox covers i bought a while ago, aftermarket ones from Nik off Ebay, look pretty good quality, look stronger than original ones.
Had to dremel down the left side one, as it was catching the tank where the tap mounts.
hell have his work cut out for him then  i tried rubbin my paint down but gave up. coulda done with a DA hands were jus too much hard work

whered you get ya fairin bolts from ?
Quote from: "rybes"hell have his work cut out for him then  i tried rubbin my paint down but gave up. coulda done with a DA hands were jus too much hard work
He told me last week he would have to completely rub down the panels where the bare plastic was showing through.
Just the tank and headlight fairing that have the plastic showing through.
Quote from: "rybes"whered you get ya fairin bolts from ?
The bolts are M6 stainless countersunk, i get them from a local shop, around 12p each! The countersunk washers are from Pro Bolt, they`re aluminium.
The M5 ones on the headlight fairing are from Ebay
It`s finally stopped raining here, so had a ride over to the painters this morning.
Booked in for Monday morning, should be ready by next Friday, so that gives me a chance to get out on it over the weekend if the rain holds off
Well, still raining here, so never got out for a ride
Got the bodywork off ready for the painters in the morning :D
Garage looks a bit empty now Steamer 1 has gone
Spare seat is somewhere in the postal system on it`s way to get rebuilt Corbin style.
Finally coming together :)

Should be done by Friday, so hopefully all finished next weekend, and the sun will be out, and i`ll get some riding done :)
Panels have been dropped off at the painters, along with the decals and all the instructions, what can go wrong?

Well Chaps, two major milestones reached today, my 1000th post on here, and i got the bodywork back from the painters (just waiting for the airbox cover panels, ready next week) :D
Late home from work, so straight out into the garage and fitted the panels, finally finished at 1-45am
Pics taken in the dark garage doesn`t really do the paintwork justice, i`ll have to post some more taken in the sunlight (if we ever get any)
Here she is, almost finished. :)

And finally, the original petrol cap was looking a bit old and tired, so fitted a billet racing cap, made for the Yamaha R1, it fits the Tiger, just needs the Tiger rubber that fits under the cap trimming a little
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3706.jpg)
Man that looks absolutely Brilliant, can hardly wait to see the daylight pictures. Respect for sticking with your vision. 8)

Still waiting for airbox covers and the new seat, once they get here, i`ll bombard you all with loads of pics of her finished :D
And i just ordered a set of Mustang lowered pegs, plus a couple of other bits from elsewhere, just to finish it off
Picked up the finished airbox covers this morning, postman has delivered a couple of bits, weather forecast is pretty good for tomorrow, so hopefully be able to get out and about, and maybe post up a couple of pics of the finished bike
lookin forward to the pics mate :D enjoy the sunshine while you have it
Well, started out sunny, then the clouds came, but finally got out for a few miles.

Apart from that, all is well. :D
The 10cm higher screen works well with no buffetting.

I`ve adjusted the bars, now one last job to do. just got to find some handguards that will work with the adjustable levers.
With the TT Legend yokes i used, even with the Rox risers fitted, the bars are now about as far back as the originals, so thinking space between the handguards and top fairing will be limited.
Thinking of going back to the original levers, and use the original handguards, and have them sprayed to match
The originals are too flexible even for plasticote, I wouldn't, when they peel they'll look awful.
She's a real stunner, well done Sir 8)
I just realised what it reminds me of with the orange leasing edge, BRM racing cars of old,I know they were green but it's got that same purposeful look to it.

Excellent looking job, really compliments the appearance without looking cruiser. Interested to hear how well it rides, did you have a feel pad inserted?
Feel pad?
It was just rebuilt with normal foam.
I`ll report on the ride when i`ve been out on it, although it feels a lot better just sitting on it, and the wife is pleased with her half!
A set of Mustangs lowered footpegs just arrived, can`t wait to get out and try the new seat and pegs :D

You won`t be disappointed, this is the second seat he`s done for me, very good quality work.
" feel pad" sorry auto correction, guess you figured out out was meant to be gel pad.
I ask because I'd always been sceptical about them till I did 1k kms in a day on the Street Triple with a factory gel seat, let's just say I noticed the difference when I did a few 100 with the stock seat.

Yeah, same style but with silver piping. Old one was looking a bit tired and had the odd rip in it too. Should tidy it up a bit.

Been messing around trying to get some hand guards fitted.
Originals wouldn`t fit with the new levers, so came up with an idea.
Made a couple of brackets from 5 x 20 ally bar, bent and cut to fit on the bottom of the lever pivot pin, had to cut out where the lever sits to allow the guards to fit, here`s what i ended up with, not the prettiest job in the world, but once i`ve had a ride out and they`re ok, i`ll tidy them up and get them powder coated :)

Hey RF
I've got a question about your front mudguard.
Have you mounted it on 2 posts that go straight up into the holes in the lower yoke? If so is the mudguard stable at speed?
I've knocked up a rough plate that I can bolt up underneath the yoke that will hopefully accept 4 mounting posts in a square. Once I'm happy with it I'll make a neater one.
If you get the chance to post a photo that'd be fantastic.
Cheers

Thats how i did it when i had the original forks and yokes, it was solid and stable, now i have the Trophy bottoms and yokes, theres no mounting holes on the bottom yoke.
Easiest way was to use another Trophy top yoke under the bottom yoke, and mounted the plate directly to that.
Here you go

Your welcome :)
Going through your posts, i see that you used the original forks, the 2 bolts with spacers will be fine at speed, it was on mine.
Not much to report lately, been under the weather with a touch of flu since i got the seat back, and noticed one of the fork seals was leaking.
Fitted a new seal today, hoping to get out tomorrow for a ride. :)

A lot more stable mate.
As Mustang once said, "handles like its on rails" :D
Can i ask why you used the Legend yokes bud?
Will the Trident yokes work if i fit risers?
Daz.
Quote from: "pegleg"Can i ask why you used the Legend yokes bud?

Daz.
Not sure about the Trident yokes, but there are only a couple of yokes that will work without catching the fairing frame.
The Legend yokes work, as they don`t catch the bracket, plus they have the holes for the bar mounts.
The early Trophy yokes work, but need to be drilled for the bar mounts.
Cool thanks bud.
early speed triple fits too but needs holes drillin for risers
You can also buy a MFW top yoke made for the Trophy to convert them to high bars, i think Neil bought a set, straight bolt on.
Finally got out over the weekend for a few miles.
Fork seal is no longer leaking, removed the handguards as i didn`t like the look of them.
The new seat is much more comfortable now, and with Mustangs lowered pegs fitted, no more knee and leg aches
Might look at fitting some different handlebars, as the swept back originals don`t feel too comfortable on my arthritic wrists.
And one more problem to sort, the neutral light problem is back, thought i`d cured that by repairing the wire, just hope its not the plate inside the engine worn.
Quote from: rf9rider on April 14, 2012, 08:33:24 PM
A bit more done today, finally sorted the leaky tap, a simple o ring cured that.
So, fairings off and spare tank on
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3639.jpg)
Pingel fitted, i screwed it into the adaptor plate using Loctite 577 which is petrol resistant, then bolted the whole lot into the tank using the o ring around the hole to seal it
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP3635.jpg)
A little update, seems the Loctite 577, which i used to seal the tap where it threads into the adaptor plate, which claims to be petrol resistant isn`t!
Haven`t rode the bike for a few weeks, as busy doing jobs on the house, been away on hols etc etc.
Thought i could smell petrol in the garage, finally got around to looking at the bike, fuel was leaking from the petrol tap, looks like the Loctite has turned to a gooey mess.
So now i`m going to use the Yamaha tap, which means making up an adaptor plate, using the O ring to seal it, as the original hole in the tank has been enlarged to fit the Pingel.
JB WELD .............it works :thumbsup
Quote from: Mustang on October 23, 2012, 02:27:31 AM
JB WELD .............it works :thumbsup
Don`t know if that would cure the problem, it`s leaking from the threads where the tap screws into the adaptor plate, it`s a real fine thread and it`s a really tight fit, so i reckon anything other than a fine liquid would come out as you tighten the tap into the plate.
With the Yamaha tap, the made up adaptor plate would fit against the tank with an O ring, then the tap has it`s own O rings to fit against the plate.
Just hoping none of the goo has got into the carbs
if its jus been sat i cant see the goo gettin into the carbs. you should be ok mate :thumbsup
Finally got some spare time to sort the petrol tap.
Took the leaky Pingel tap off, and fitted the Yamaha tap.
As the hole in the tank had been enlarged to fit the Pingel, made up an adaptor plate to fit between the tap and tank, sealed with an O ring, all well so far.
Battery had gone flat, so on charge overnight, hopefully be running tomorrow.

:thumbsup youll have to let us know how the reserve is on it
According to others who have used the same tap, reserve is only about 15/20 miles.
But i usually don`t let it get down that low, too heavy to be pushing around to the nearest petrol station.
Even though i`ve had the battery hooked up to the Optimate for the last few weeks, the battery has had it, not enough go in it to turn the motor over.
Tried charging it on my other charger all day, no good.
Just ordered one of those Motobatt batteries, hopefully here for the weekend. :doubt
hmmm. think ill stick to a standard one then. ive gotten used to the reserve on it now over the last 12 years. id forget it was so small and know id run out.
gutted bout ya battery mate. bet ya lookin forward to gettin out on it again. wont be out on mine now till mid jan cos im in denmark till then :thumbsup
Need to get it done as i`ll be needing the bike as my truck needs a new full exhaust system, i`m having a stainless hand built system fitted as its cheaper than Vauxhall prices, so it will be off the road for a few days having that done.
Don`t usually ride in the winter months unless its dry/sunny, but need transport to get to work.
Good news, new battery arrived this morning.
Bad news, sent the wrong one, too big to fit in the battery tray.
Sorted out over the phone, correct one should be here Christmas eve.
Hopefully have a good Christmas day if it turns up! :new_xmas
:doubt Ilk be impressed if they manage it, best of luck with that mate :new_xmas
Well, got a text message from DPD, the couriers, be here between 9 - 5. :thumbsup
be a good xmas for you then :thumbsup
Well, it`s officially a good christmas, the correct battery turned up this morning, seller sent it next day delivery for me as they cocked up in the first place!
Battery is on and the Tiger is running, just waiting for the rain to stop and get out for a ride, or is that a christmas miracle too far? :new_xmas
we not got rain here. however we do have 30mph winds, 1 degree and its snowin. so if it rains ya better off than me :hat10

Thanks for the comments.
Finally got out for first ride of the new year, dry, sunny and a little chilly, bit of Redex in the tank along with some fresh fuel, took around 40 miles to clear the rough running, now runs as it should.
Hope more of the same tomorrow as Mrs RF wants a go on the back. :thumbsup
Another job ticked off the "to do" list.
Ordered some Moose Racing High ATV bars from the USA, arrived this morning.
So, here they are...........
Compared to oem bars.....
Found the oem bars had an unatural riding position, turned down too much at the grips, after a bit of research and a recommendation from our very own Mustang thought i`d try the Moose bars.
Fitted...........
Had to drill the bars for the nubs on the switches to stop them rotating.........
Other side............
Almost there............
The Moose bar pad looked a little out of place, so fitted the Renthal pad, looks a lot better with the colour......
The Moose bars have no threaded inserts for the bar ends, so off to local bike shop in the morning to get some aftermarket bar ends, just need the inserts as going to use my oem bar ends, and some new handguards i`ve got. :hat10
Looking good mate :thumbsup'
i like this bike. lookin forward to seein it :thumbsup
Cheers Chaps.
Went and bought some bar end mounts this morning, ready to fit the new handguards.
Just needed the inner rubber part as the Moose bars have no threaded insert.
As i have the adjustable levers, the oem handguards won`t fit, so bought some GS1150 Touratech ones. :hat10
Also got the spoilers, look a lot better with them imo.
Guards drilled and spoilers bolted on................
Straightforward to fit using the kit provided................

Those handguards were an excellent find, looks the dogs dodahs!!! :XXsunsmile
Very Cool, that's one tricked out steamer
Thanks all, think that`s about it for now, well, just awaiting the postman to finish one last job.
Not much more to do on it, as i`ve got it looking like what i wanted, and a lot more comfortable to ride.
I`d like to sort out a better suspension set up, better quality shock for a start, when funds allow.
Then maybe some engine tuning, Super 111 cams etc, again, when funds allow.
So, it`s roll on the summer............... :hat10
Another little job done.
Mrs RF bought me a Sat Nav for xmas, so set about putting that on.
Cheap waterproof case and mount from China, same thing as you get from here only £30 cheaper!
No room on the bars to fit it, so came up with this
99p rubber bush from Ebay..............
Enabling it to fit on the stabilising bar...............

You probably already have a plan, but if not, see where I mounted the Hella socket on my mate's Steamer here:
http://www.tigertriple.com/forum/index.php/topic,11378.msg84819.html#msg84819
Thanks mate, i still have the original plastic surround which already has a hole in it for an alarm key.
Going to take my good one off and use that, although i have to enlarge the hole to fit the socket.
I`m thinking of wiring it in to an ignition live wire, probably the wiring to the voltmeter i put in, so if i forget to turn it off, at least it won`t drain the battery when i turn the bike off with the key.
This is exactly what I've been doing with mine recently. Got an old work TomTom lying around, so I've fitted the 12v socket in the dash where BB fitted his mates, and was just looking at mounting options.
Having trouble locating a suitable rubber bush, don't suppose you've got a link RF???

Jeeze, looks like a brown trouser moment!
Mine is fine so far, think i`ll check it more often looking at that.
I`ve used the Kagizume discs on other bikes before with no problem.
I had a Kagizume on the rear from when I got it and discovered two cracks between the holes and the inner diameter and thought that was bad but your experience is in another category altogether.
i hope that never happened as you was goin along
Both cracked while parked up thankfully! Strange eh?
Managed to get out for an hour today, still a little chilly here.
Motobatt battery seems a good buy, turned over and fired up straightaway after standing for a good few weeks.
The Moose bars are a lot more comfortable, though took a while to get used to the new riding position, guess i need to get out on it a bit more :hat10

Its pretty straightforward, just need to use the Tiger stanchions, springs and internals.
You`ll also need another set of yokes, i used the Legend TT ones, look through my earlier posts to see how i did it.
Been a while since i`ve done anything to the bike, apart from start it regularly.
Noticed the petrol tap was leaking again, so took it off, the o ring i`d fitted wasn`t looking good, so decided on plan B.
Cleaned up the adaptor plate i`d made (the tank has an enlarged hole if you remember) cleaned up the area around the tank hole, mixed up a batch of JB weld (as recommended by Mustang) smeared it around the tank hole, then bolted the adaptor plate and tap into the tank.
So far, so good, no leaks.
MOT time on Saturday, so we`ll see how it gets on.

That's handy, I was just about to go looking for one :icon_salut: cheers.
I've fitted 3 of these now (Aprillia, Laverda and my Girly) and have been impressed by their sustained cranking power, especially churning over the 650 single. The only other new battery that comes close is the lead acid on the Guzzi but it's the size of a battery from a small truck :icon_eek:

I was surprised at how many car components Guzzi used in those days. It explains why Guzzi is the first choice for Morgan replicas.
Bike passed MOT today, 2 advisories, rear tyre getting low on tread, and gear change linkage has a fair ammount of play in it.

I passed MOT on Friday too :occasion14, but that was easy, the bike still has many problems, but the guys in my area are not used to check bikes, they don't know what to look at, so, if the brake work fine, one can be sure to pass it with no problems.

Thanks John, the speedo cable is one of the little jobs i mentioned, you can`t get one the correct length, i`ve got to send it off to get it shortened by about 100mm, it`s a job for winter time. :thumbsup
Ah I see, in that case it's perfect
Early Africa Twin should be right.

Wow! Excellent work matey. This mod report is priceless.
Cheers,

Thanks for the positive comments...........
It`s been a couple of months since i last went out on the bike, the Motobatt battery was money well spent, turned over and fired up straight away.
However, it ran like a pig, erratic idle, runs fine over 3000 rpm, so used a can of Profi Fuel Max in the tank, after a total of around 160 miles, it does run better, but not perfect, so the carbs will be coming off this week for a clean through.
I did used to run the motor weekly, but have been busy with other things the last couple of months, so only myself to blame for the neglect.
Time for an oil and plug change while i`m at it.
I finally managed to spend some time on the Steamer, cleaned the carbs, it now runs like it should.
Despite running 2 cans of Profi Fuel max through it, the bowls were full of crap.
I bought a couple of cans of Seafoam to see if thats any better than the Profi stuff.
The pilot circuits were gummed up, cleaned those out with a strand of wire.
Here`s what i found in one of the bowls; :icon_eek:
While i had it in bits, i also fitted the new, shortened speedo cable, looks a lot better now. :icon_biggrin:

just re read ya thread on ya bike and its a nice machine alright :thumbsup you can get some nasty lookin stuff in float bowls cant ya. last carb i done had some kind of toffee lookin muck in the bottom. tasted sweet too so god knows what that was. what speedo cable you use in the end and how long is it ? mines just a inch too short. think it was off a speedmaster.
Cheers Rybes, i got the cable from http://www.triumphparts.co.uk/index.php/2/207049/
Have to buy their longest one and get it shortened, as it`s the only one that will fit.
It`s 126cm long, then it needs shortening by 10cm, so final length is 116cm.
here`s the product code;
Speedo cable outer length 126cm
Product code: 725
More information
Longest speedo cable we stock at 126cm. Ideal for modified bikes where extra length may be required.
I had it shortened by http://www.venhill.co.uk/Home
Cable was £15, cost of shortening was £15, so £30 for a speedo cable :icon_lol:

:bug_eye good grief, remind me to stand you a decent meal next time I see you, or would you prefer I save the scrapings out of my Steamer carbs for your next sandwich? And some people have a go at us Jocks for Haggis :icon_rolleyes:
Seriously I'm dreading opening up mine, wouldn't start after taking it out of the crate.
cheers Rf :thumbsup i shall be on the phone to those in the week
and theres no way sin id eat a sandwich of that stuff. im gluten intollerant so cant eat wheat. stick it on a rice cake tho and youll make me a happy man lol
Rybes, before you spend money on a new cable, you can have my old one, it will just need shortening.
PM me and we`ll sort it. :thumbsup
And i still have those fork seal protectors if you still want them?
Since cleaning the carbs out, been starting it regularly and letting it run for a while, all is well, just waiting for a dry day to get out on it. :icon_rolleyes:

Got the rear brake fitted, underslung from a Trophy, torque arm from a Honda VF1000, looks a lot better than the original i think.

This whole thread was a good read. Thanks for that.
Just an observation vis a vis the 'low slung' caliper placement. It's interesting the different viewpoints out there. Over on the Bonneville/Thruxton site they are really up on switching the caliper position from under the swingarm (per 'stock') to over; you have to get an adaptor plate to make it work. This gets it out of the way of road crud and mung that is thrown up.
Aesthetics notwithstanding, of course. :qgaraduate
Thanks, glad someone enjoyed it!
I`ve been looking into having a plate made to protect the caliper from road crud, but then again, it`s not often i ride it in the rain etc, it`s more of a Sunday afternoon toy :icon_lol:

It is not really an issue for us here, either, since we cannot ride in the winter (-10c this morning). And a significant number of riders I have come into contact with absolutely refuse to ride in any wet weather.
Nice in the summer over there though, we were in Niagara Falls last year, a lot of bikes about.
And even nicer hereabouts! Amongst the best riding roads in the world, imho. And summer weather that is predictable. :thumbsup
The saga continues.
Seems JB Weld is not petrol resistant, as i was in the garage a couple of weeks ago, thought i could smell petrol.
On closer inspection, i found the leak, the JB Weld had turned to goo and petrol was seeping through.
So, off with the tank and cleaned up the gooey mess, and after a bit of surfing the interweb, came across this, Permatex 2, which is supposed to be petrol resistant.
I`m leaving the tank off as i`m away for a week, will have a look when i get back to see if it has sealed ok.
Although i do have a plan B :bad
While the tank was off, i replaced the broken Idle adjuster, brand new from Triumph!
Carbs were off and back on in 5 minutes, i`m getting quite good at that job :icon_lol:
As for plan B, i`ve bought another tank, with an unmolested hole for the petrol tap!
Got it cheap as its got a crap paint job, no worries as i`ll need to get it sprayed anyhow.
Thought i`d treat the new tank to a genuine Steamer tap, again, brand new from Triumph :bug_eye
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/rf9rider/IMGP4794_zps618b3171.jpg)
I can vouch for the Permatex being hydrocarbon resistant, used it often.
Take the plastic strainers off both the main and reserve inlets and throw them away :nod then fit a small inline filter on the petcock out. Now you can see when you have crap in the fuel without emptying the tank and removing the petcock.
What did those come out of? :bug_eye
That's the filter for the reserve, the main want very bonny either.
After a week away, it looks like the Permatex isn`t petrol resistant either.
Came back to this in the garage....................
So plan B it is then.
Cleaned up the mounting hole for the petrol tap and fitted the new one, along with the petrol cap.
Leaving this one as well for a week to check for leaks.
Looks like i`ll be riding this year with a crappy looking tank until i can either get this one resprayed or repair the other one somehow.
After messing about with the white tank, trying various methods to seal the petrol tap, i`ve given up on it.
It will make a nice ornament for my garage.
The black spare one is now on for this year, i`ll get it resprayed to match over the winter.
Been busy with other things lately, so finally got some time to sort the bike, as usual, letting it sit has gummed up the carbs, took them off over the weekend, although the float bowls were clean, the pilots had gummed up solid, cleaned them out and its running fine again.
Only thing is the MOT ran out end of May, so that will be sorted this week, then out for a run at the weekend hopefully.
been busy on mine too yesterday, hopefully itll be runnin later today :thumbsup
Checking bike over for MOT, all fine during the week.
Went out this morning into the garage, familiar smell of petrol.
Not so bad this time, the fuel pipe was split just below the tap.
Rather than pay £18 for a Triumph part, going to cut out the bad part and install an inline filter.
Hoping to find something in our local motor shops, if not it`s another wait for one to be delivered during the week.
just got meself a fuel filter from wilcos. now i can go rebuild the carbs on mine n hope it starts
This is what the K&N filter looks like in situ.
NB this is the reinforced hose that has a slightly larger nominal bore than 6mm, I've now replaced this with single skin bike fuel hose that is near identical to the original.
I have since also replaced the worm drive hoseclips with cable ties which work just as well and looks neater.
I trimmed about 10mm of the end of the original moulded hose to get enough gap to keep the filter vertical
Thanks mate, i`ll probably have to mount mine differently as i`ve already cut the original pipe down to suit the Yamaha tap which had the nozzle coming out horizontally from the tap.
Now i`m using an original Steamer tap, so probably have to mount the filter horizontally between the carbs and airbox, then fit the new tube between the filter and tap.
Fitted the K&N fuel filter plus a new bit of pipe, had a new rear tyre fitted as the old one was getting a bit low on tread, and good news, bike passed the MOT this afternoon. :icon_biggrin:
Did a few miles today, was good getting out on it again.
More miles tomorrow if the weather holds.
Some things you can fix :augie
Out on the bike today, running like it should, only problem was getting caught out twice in torrential downpours and the obligatory thunder and lightning.
Still enjoyed it though. :thumbsup
cracking bike well done painting mine shortly its red sorry to you all with red bikes.going towards black the new 800xc is phantom black sounds much better than black :bad.where did you get your stainless steel bolds for all the panels looks cool.
Thanks, most of the stainless bolts came from my local nut and bolt shop, some from Ebay, and the cup washers from Ebay.
All the bolts etc are available on Ebay, but were cheaper from my local shop.
If your tank is leaking not much will seal a plastic tank for long. However this has been recommended in the boating community as a viable option especially if you are using it as a sealant..

Cheers Bruken, i`ll take a look.
Decided on getting the spare tank resprayed over winter time.
Might have a go with the leaking tank sometime in the future.
You gonna pick up this casing at any point???

All the scaremongering about Brexit scaring you off?😉
Can't take the tiger? I wouldn't go if I were you!
Spain won`t register modified bikes into their system, has to be a totally standard bike, as it came from the factory, or else i would take it with us.
So as mine is "slightly" modified, i`ve got no chance of registering it.
I`m looking for another Tiger once we get there, probably a 1050.
How is yours modified? Can't ya put it back to standard then swap it all back once it's registered?

Forks, wheels, brakes, crash bars, handlebars, footrests, end cans, clutch/brake levers, hand guards, brake/clutch lines, mudguards, seat, paint job,the list goes on............. :icon_lol:
Haven`t you followed the thread? :icon_biggrin:
Yeah I did when you first wrote it. That was long ago thought. Do they really pic on paint too?
If I were closer to Spain I'd bring my tiger down and I'd swap the bits of mine you need to get it registered then swap it all back when ya get ya paper work
Thanks for the offer mate, but it needs to be back to standard every year for the ITV (mot), too much hassle!
Be easier and cheaper to buy a standard bike when we get there, and i`ve always fancied a 1050 if i can find a good one.
:bug_eye no bike modification? Why the hell are ya moving there :icon_lol:
Oooo a 1050 I've always liked them too
No way to leave it with UK registration & plate in Spain?
Quote from: fishnbiker on November 18, 2018, 10:55:21 PM
No way to leave it with UK registration & plate in Spain?
Not really, you`re allowed to have a UK vehicle for 6 months in Spain, then either register it in Spain or you have to leave the country with it, then you can`t bring it back for a certain ammount of time (can`t remember exactly), then insurance can be a pain, and back to UK for MOT, much easier to buy a Spanish bike, just too much hassle.
I'd be all over a Tiger Sport myself if I had money for a new bike.
What are the details of this alternative tap please?
Quote from: rf9rider on September 22, 2011, 01:37:07 AM
On with the next problem!
Common fault as you all know, the fuel tap leaks.
Thanks to the info from ROB, i bought this a while ago, still have the Pingel tap i bought but that will be used on something else i have planned.
Here`s the new tap alongside the old one and part number.
I bought one of these for my Steamer:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-YAMAHA-Petrol-Tap-Fuel-Petcock-TTR225-TTR230-TTR250-TTR-225-230-250-VALVE/273399564714?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
You'll need to file the fixing holes in the tap out by a milimeter or so, but it fits OK.
