I have been running the offroad tune ecu tune since November and also most recently with the custom offroad ecu tune. I noticed that the throttle was not as snappy and had a hesitation at first blip on both offroad tunes. The bike just didnt seem to have instant power like it did. I have used both the k@n and the oem air filter with equal results. The bike is running very rich, lots of soot on the exhaust pipe which is offroad as well, hence the offroad tune.
The bike would not want to start below half tank on the guage as well. I have had recent starting issues in the am, when cold and it has become so unreliable that I dont dare to take it out of town.
Update: Last night I decided to load the oem non offroad tune for the hell of it. Well, instantly I noticed the hesitation in the throttle is gone, it starts emediately on firts turnover, and the front wheel comes off the ground again. It runs and revs much smoother and I am thrilled so far in the difference in the two tunes performance. I have owned the bike since new and have tried several offroad cans including staintune, and Rotle and now the oem offroad. I never had the offroad tune until it came available with ecu so I am new to this, but clearly my bike runs way better with the oem tune and the offroad exhaust. Granted this is only one day and I hope I am not premature in hoping that this fixed the starting issue and poor performance and poor gas mileage issue, but seat of the pants testing today, night and day difference.........
:hello2
Sometimes for some unknown reason best known to our bikes the tune will all of a sudden corrupt itself and a reload is the cure. But just for assurance just unbolt the ecu and make sure the holes in the mudguard are filled and there are no signs of corrosion on the ecu case.
Nice to hear its fixed.
:thumbsup
Must take that advice myself soon, I keep meaning to then it sort of slips my mind. I must write myself a note and stick it on the bike, CHECK ECU!
Excellent suggestion, I think your right, everything works fine for a while and then the tune gets corrupted. I will check my ecu soon.
I ran it till the fuel light came on with no starting issues and running like a bat out of hell, again.........yes!!
wont start again.ugh
filled tank, loaded several tunes, checked codes, ran a few tests, so far just turns over and no attempt to fire. It is stuck at work so I have not pulled the ecu yet, will try that and look. Any other suggestions?
Try looking at the sidestand switch, the wiring on the keyswitch, give it a wiggle, or the safety relay can all give these symptoms.
I was having issues with the sidestand switch, it was sticking closed and bike would die when I shifted in gear. I did some wd-40 but I think it still might have some issues. I wonder if it can be unplugged and run without it to test it?

You need to short across the 2 connectors. Unplugging has the same effect as sidestand down.
Don't be tempted to bypass the switch instead of replacing it. There's a horror story that underlines the risk... A Guzzi rider bypassed his sidestand switch and rode off with it down. First left-hander launched him into the oncoming traffic and he was killed outright. His widow is struggling to get his life insurance to pay up.....
Good point.
By pass is ok for checking it out but riding with it is a mod.....
It started without doing anything else to it and I got it home and in the garage. I dont have the time to really work on it now, but I appreciate all the posts with suggestions. Another thing that I noticed is that water was on the inside of the fuel tank when I opened it and not draining like it should. Maybe water in the fuel due to being outside in the rain for a couple of days. I have alot to sort out and little time or patience at the moment.
That'll be the fuel cap drain blocked up. Gently send a piece of wire down the hole and it will exit under the tank where a flexible pipe drains to the ground, or if you have it, blow it clean with an air line.
Noticed mine was blocked in just the same circumstances. About an egg cup full of water went in the tank when filling up. Ran like a dog for about 20 motorway miles if I remember right. Drained the tank at home and found nearly 1/4 litre of water in the bottom of the tank so had been happening a while. Wire wouldn't budge mine, needed a small drill carefully worked in by hand from the bottom up. When you break through expect cruddy water up you sleeve
The bottom was clogged and required a drill bit by hand to remove calcified water solids that turned rock hard. It took quite a while to work through the stuff but finally cleared it out and then air compressor from the top confirmed that it was clear. I reloaded the stock tune and it is running good. I am not sure how much water is in tank, is it possible that there is water on the bottom of the tank, and that is why when my fuel level reaches 1/2 that it wont start?
When the tank is low it wont start till I add fuel. Is there an easy way to drain the tank?
Thanks
Oil will float on top of water as less dense, so the level of fuel shouldn't make a difference. The safest way is to run it as far as you can then remove the tank, remove the pump mounting plate with the tank tilted on its side and drain what is left into a suitable container so you can see the water in the fuel.
OR
Syphon the fuel out into a container as above so the water can be seen.
Then
Replace the fuel filter as water can get caught up in it.
Alternatives to OEM on site, but most aluminium filters are compatable.
Note,
Make sure if you remove the tank, you have enough space to swing around, as they can be awkward in a tight spot, and a pre-determined landing spot for the tank, ie old blankets etc.
Nothing like dancing around with a tank in your hands and nowhere to put it.
Like I said 1/4 litre of water in my tank wasn't causing any problems, but I didn't put it back anyway.....
Keith....
Intermittent problems are a bummer.....
Check inside your ignition switch housing. You may see evidence of sparking, cracked solder, loose connection.
Thanks Jerry,
It is in a stage now that I am afraid to turn it off. I have a trip planned in August to the Northeast to meet my Brother in law so I have some time to work it out I guess.
I went for a nice ride yesterday with no issues, I have put some additives in the fuel to absorb moisture and clean the fuel injectors so I am hoping that I can run it empty and then start with fresh fuel.
I have wiggled the wires from the ignition and everything there seems to be fine. I did notice since clearing out the lower drain from the fuel tank, that when I open the fuel cap there is a noticeable release of pressure so that might be a good thing. I cant remember hearing that on my Tiger before. I hear it on my cars, but not the Tiger. I think that it was clogged for years, and recently I have been using it as my daily transportation and leaving in the rain so that may have been the problem.
We shall see..........................
Keith
Although the water absorbtion trick should work, running it down won't get rid of any water left in the bottom, you need to drain it. All I did was run it till the fuel light came on and a bit more then took the tank off and tipped it upside down over a drain tray. When I poured the contents into a bottle about 1/4 was water. Refit the tank, half an hour start to finish.
Ok, pulled the tank and removed the fuel pump/filter assembly. Drained remaining fuel into a proper container. Installed a new fuel filter, and put it all back together. I changed out the coolant while I had the tank off and checked the air filter, and all hoses connected.
Fresh hi test fuel and she is running good at the moment. We shall see for how long and how low I can go on the tank to see if I have starting issues again when it gets low.
It was nice to get back on the bike and have a spirited ride.

Keith
this points to a vent problem.
the small bore pipe next to the one you cleaned out for the drain is the tank vent.
it could be blocked like the drain, or the black plastic thing (tip over valve) is not vertical or is blocked.
this can lead to poor running when low on fuel
1/2 tank of fuel, wouldnt start the other day. Pulled off the vacume lines on the bottom of tank, and after a while it did start, but hesitant till warm. I noticed prior as well that upon first start, I couldnt give it any throttle or it would die till it warmed up.
I did clear the second tank vent, and it was clogged too, not sure if that will help.
I am thinking it may be valve adjustment time? 42000 miles and never done one. Could this be the hard to start issues now that I am dealing with and poor throttle response at first start up? It runs great otherwise after a 10 second warmup and IF it starts.
feedback please regarding valve adjust, or anything else. I couldnt get the connectors off the ecu to check for corrosion on the bottom of that, I will have to look at that again too.
Thanks, Keith
Wow no adjustments in 42 thou
It will be interesting to see how the gaps look , if the gaps are tight then this could cause compression issues leading to poor cold starting but I would have thought you might have had poor running when hot too :?
But those valves need looking at pronto !
