Title: Took my last ride on Sunday.
Post by: benebob on December 29, 2012, 04:29:29 AM
Was on a quick grocery trip Sunday about 10am which will likely be the last for my tiger.  A drunk driver pulled directly into me making a left turm in. Had no where to go but up and over.  Everything was fine though as aftwer she asked if I needed anything she promptly ran over me to leave as th cobs surely wouldn't need her.  Todaygot moved from the er to a rehab hosptial for a likely 2 week or so stay berfore gettingt home to see what's left of the bike.

Physically I should heal by summer  Mentally I caqnt stop crying that there are humans who lack compasion so much they'll leave you to die cold and alone on the street  II don't know where to start with that one other then fighting for a return of  the firing squad.

Should be out of live in rehab mid month and on thr PIP last until baseball lseason.

I know I found it quick but says the right thing on maint and updates.  For the price though I think I'd insist on a center stand and at least sides  or  tack.  Anybody now the bike?  May be gone by the time I talk to the motorcycle chaser

Make the paper tomorrow.  9 days later

http://lancasteronline.com/article/local/798247_POLICE-LOG--Monday--December-31.html#ixzz2GfLdlQ00

QuoteMANHEIM TWP.: A criminal complaint has been filed against Melissa J. Serrano, 20, of Lancaster, following a vehicle accident Dec. 23. A Lancaster man was riding his motorcycle north in the 1500 block of Lititz Pike, when a southbound vehicle turned in front of him, resulting in a collision. The sedan fled the scene, but witnesses provided police with descriptions of the driver and the vehicle, including the license plate.

The motorcycle driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. At 10:22 a.m., the suspect vehicle was stopped by police in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, and the driver, Serrano, was taken into custody.

She was charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, accidents involving death or personal injury, and a traffic violation. She was arraigned and committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

How you're healing up.

Well they got her thanks to decent bystanders, she must have been really drunk or just too stupid to dump the car and leg it  :doubt think she will learn, probably too stupid.

At least she's banged up so will have time to contemplate what she did before she's properly dealt with.  I hope it is more severe than it would be here.....

Edit: just looked at the road where it happened in Google Earth based on the newspaper description of the accident. Was she turning into the shopping arcade?

probably loss of license
a fine
maybe some jail time but doubtful

the sad part is , she wasn't even of legal drinking age yet !

Coming from piecing together everything after 10 days of heavy narcotics yes,it is a commercial shopping parcal.  I pulled out at a light 1/2 mile or so down going north.  She was already sitting at an entrance to a CVS/Strip mall on one side, Firestone on the south but basically the shopping center is also used as a pull through.  As I said she was sitting there and aside from me and the suburban who I passed turning onto the road no one else was around.  Knowing I was going to be making a left about 50 feet beyond her I was keenly waiting for her to move.  She didn't, I was about 10 feet from her and still no movement then all of a sudden she guns it right in front of me.  I hit her pretty much in the pass side front corner.  Never touched the brakes.
I recal a woman asking if I needed anyone called or if I was okay.  Clearly my  houlder and pelvis were on a plane more akin to a playdough doll so I think I respond that no I need the cops and ambulance called.  Next thing I here what sounds lik an engine starting up and feel some movement as it untangles from the wreck.  At this point having thouble getting air I'm struggling to remove my helmet.  Apparently, a bystandard probably thesuburban person chaises her down enough to get a plate number.  Police and ambalance are on the sean quickly and everything is busy and sureal from this point unti they put me into the ambulance less than 30 minutes from the accident.  Next thing I remember i the trama er room at the hospital.

As for how I'm doing.  Slowly healing and working on rehab as best I can.  My goal at this point is to get my pee back off this Thurs and then go home to continue to recover in my own bed.  We'll sell  Have that oh so important initial meeting with the lawyer on Friday.  Recovery will hopfully put me at 90% in 6 month.

Slow and painful recovery.  Developed blood clots in my leg last week, spent another night in the hospital.  Am completely immobilized now spending 23 hours a day lying flat on my back with leg elevated.  Miserable am I.  Today it has been a month since I was hit.  Can't remember when I went a month w/o riding.

Got out Saturday for the first non-medical trip.  Went to the local yamaha dealer to sit on a 10 Tiger SE.  Hurt like hell getting my leg over but have decided I prefer a Girly over the roadie for now,

Wow, sorry to here the tales of woe, can relate to your situation I am into 7th month recovery of same situation. 3rd ride out on my 1972 export rocket three 60 miles on the clock after three year rebuild.
Being told your lucky to be alive by surgeons, so go away and deal with it as nature will heal you, doesn't always work.
But keep positive it will get better, but in the mean time trying to keep your head straight and wanting string up the guilty party will be a difficult thought to get rid of. Insurance and legal issues won't have your best focus at present, I am sure friends and family are supporting you, but?

Just a word of advice, start logging all the detail and daily horrors you go through, charge all incidentals even the diary to write up the stuff, keep all receipts. Record all mileage related to appointments and if you are excluded from major stuff, not just loss of earnings, such as what jobs you would be doing apart from polishing the bike bits left in one piece. I.E dreaded DIY household duties, then keep bills and claim the labour part (get the house painted etc)
If anybody helps you dress, eat or wash then log it.

Oh and one more thing, get the best looking physiotherapist there is, it helps, beleive me.
Pete  :headbang

No one told me you could choose. :BangHead I had a bloke help make my leg work again when a tin box on wheels hit me side ways.

The advise to log every thing is so important, I found it very hard to try and remember all that stuff 6 months later when you're asked to present it as part of your claim. :thumbsup

Benebob, I wish you a speedy recovery, keep dreaming of your new bike, the first ride on it will be one of the greatrest feelings you can get (on two wheels, that is) :wave

Prelim hearing day. Seems the public defender has talked the girl who hit me into a plea deal where the felony hit and run is dropped and the felony assult with a m.v. stays along with the dui and other chargesl She will get a 6-14 month sentance, 5 years probation, must pay tbd restitution and will not get her license back until it is paid in full.

Unfortuately there was no hearing and there were a ton of peopele there so I didn't get to personally thank both the witnesses who without them she never would have gotten caught but I'll definately send them a thank you card. I did get to see a picture of her car from the Swatara cop. I did a good job of making the damage noticable. Apparently Japanese steel isn't as strong as English alloys as I did a solid 4k in damage to her car and IMHO as a former trained cr writer ther is no doubt that the car has "frame" damage

Result of a sort, I feel it lacks a sense of closure. Do you think it will change her "frame" of mind?

As do I my civil lawyer actually suggested that even though he knows I'll get like $5 a week until I take a dirt nap.  She'll be able to get a bread and butter license that allows for work and groccery shopping but that's it.

Do I think she'll change-no but I'm a negative person to begin with and would love to be proven wrong.  The 5 years probation wil give her every opportunity.

As for closure, I still have that opportunity to speak at her sentencing so we'll see.

Yeah, ideally since I will never be able to swim, play tennis sail on my small sailboats, or throw a baseball and technically will never be 100% so who knows where work with go on letting me back I'd love to see a 5 year sentence but I also know that isn't the most realistic as there are murders who serve less time in our overcrowded underfunded prison system.

Benebob, for other Tiger riders reference/consideration when thinking of riding gear to wear......... what gear were you wearing? You mentioned helmet so far.
Title: Re: Took my last ride on Sunday.
Post by: benebob on February 17, 2013, 11:49:49 AM
Bilt steel toe boots
Jeans (I'm bad unless I'm riding all day but lucked out w/o a bit of road rash)
Triumph Richmond textile jacket w/ the armor in it
Bell Vortex helmet
Cortech Scarab winter gloves

Ysterday I went to a local dealer to waste some time and get out of the house.  Seems they took a trade in the night before complicating my bike replacement.  Its a 06 Silver Tiger fully bagged with crash bars and looks BRAND new.  Has 7k miles.  Salesman claims to have known the owner for years saying he's a VW of America Master Tech.  Said it just had 2 Mich tires in the fall, fork oil, brake fluid, oil, coolant changed and steering stem bearings repaced over xmas so it sounds ready to ride and very well maintained.  Did I mention it looks BRAND new?

Problem is I really want a roulette green Girly but for an asking $1700 (would like to settle for a hundred off plus a $250 clothing allowance there to replace my jacket but the price is fair as is) over the green one I've narrowed down to (owner is out of the country so I haven't pulled the trigge).  I could get a 5 year newer basically new 06 with 14k less miles and a complete history comming with it.

Of course I don't have the cash just sitting here for the 06 as her insurance hasn't paid a dime yet or even gotten their appraiser out to look at my pile of broken triumph.  They claim they will try for Tuesday but of course I won't let them on my property when I'm not here since I need to show them all my clothes and explain what parts are missing like my vario winshield and $125 transisions helmet visor.  I'm expecting to see her state minimum limit of $5k for all the stuff.

Decision, decisions, decisions...  Thoughts or recommendations?

There's a saying over here, never buy a mechanics car, not sure that applies to bikes mind.

I'm with you I love the roulette green colour scheme, I would continue to look for the colour you want.

Only my 2cents worth

Sounds like too good to pass up, if it has a confirmed device history and the dealer is offering a warranty. I'd be very tempted to put a deposit on it. They know you and know your going to get an insurance payout soon, would expect them to offer you something to commit.

+1 on Sin, I'd go for the better bike, colour isn't everything.  And I'd talk to my solicitor about taking out a loan and buy it now and him to argue her insurance should pay the interest until they cough up.  That will put pressure on them to get their finger out.

Post by: HockleyBoy on February 18, 2013, 10:13:12 AM
Im with the guys above, the 06 sounds like a great deal for a much newer bike which is ready to go without spending further cash. The older bike could easily eat up the $1700 difference in servicing and adding crash bars etc.

I was originally planning on  buying it back or hoping that the cost of the bike, my clothes and the $400 tow bill go over the 5k limit she had but aside from the rear shock, alternator, starter and handlebasr and switches there isn't much worth saving.   We'll see.

Just like a diabetic kid in a candy store.  Arm still too painfull and lacking range to ride so not having it at home is surely the best.

Did hear back from the lawyer yesterday, the adjuster gave $4660 for my 99 and with cloths and towing I was well over her 5k limit (got to love state minimums) o the rest of the money to buy it should soon be on its way.  Was thinking I might need to us a little $ from a credit card to get it home.

Just caught this thread as I haven't been on TT in awhile.  Sorry about your accident and it sounds as if you are on your way to getting a lot better. Worst accidents always seem to be the left turns in front of motorcycles. Tough to read and think of this happening to anyone on a motorcycle.

The 2006 looks great in Silver.  :thumbsup I have the Caspian Blue (just what was available used at the time) and love it.  I like the Tiger Girlies so much I don't care what color it is.

Curious, as you were apparently wearing a good jacket, helmet and gloves, what resulted in you injuries? Blunt force from being thrown? "Dragging" across the handlebars? Actually hit the ladies car as you went over? Land on something like a curb? If you don't want to reply to that, I understand!

Heal fast!

I think from piecing everything together my hand injuries (severely sprained thumbs and fingers were handlebar related).  From there I think I flipped over her car (without touching it) landing on my feet resulting in the pelvic disection and torn urethra, spleen, kidney and other internal injuries, went down hard on my left shoulder then slid on the road until friction stopped me.   Of xouse that is just my take from seeing the vehicle damage, etc. and my memory.

Tomorrow at 6am I get to go under and have my shoulder manipulated trying to get enough range of motion to tell if the lavia lig tear is going to require surgery.   Fun. Fun. Fun!

In my experience you'll gradually remember more unless you were unconscious at any point but it's been clinically proven that brains make up what they can't remember to link together, and make sense of, the event. In my case I remember the car not stopping at the junction, the crunch as I hit it, flying through the air, hitting a bollard, a pole, the road, sliding then the curb.  And lying there scared to move in case I'd broken anything, then wiggling my fingers, trying to wiggle my toes and not feeling them, then a white-out of pain and deciding to just lie there until someone came to help.  I don't remember hitting the car with my knees which accounted for my legs not working.  Amazingly, all I had in the way of injuries were some world-class bruises and a hairline fracture of my right hip.  18-yr-olds bounce well  :hat10

Things went great today all things considering.  No arthoscopic needed.  They were able to manipulate the shoulder enough to get full motion back and determine that it seems I have enough stability he doesn't think I will need ligament repair. Nerves just starting to wake up and getting painful.  Physical theropy tmorrow is going to suck but I'm almost certain that next week the new bike will get picked up.

Benebob, Hope you are feeling better.  You didn't buy that silver Tiger Hermy had a week or so ago did you? I live near Elizabethtown and got hit a year and a half ago getting on 283 at Toll House Road at 1:30 PM by a lady in an HHR.  I made out pretty good but had back bruising and damage to my 2000 Tiger to the sidestand and right side box and rack.  I have Happy Trails panniers on it and they held up pretty good.  Staightened most of it with a porta power and touched up the scraps with a file and black touchup paint.  Needed new side stand and engine mount bracket.  Bought crash bars from Thunderbike in New Zealand with insurance money. Back pain went away after a few months.  I was pretty rattled for awhile even driving my Avalanche but finally got back into riding,  I wear a hi viz vest quite a bit now.  Again, hope you're doing better.

Hey Crinker, yeah, I got that Silver beauty up at Hermy's (am actually picking it up at noon tomorrow).  Should be a nice cold ride of for my thinned blood.

You should know that anyone in an HHR has the right of way.  Glad you and your bike survived.  My frame came back so far it put a hole in the valve cover.

I was so excited to find out yesterday that B and B took on Triumph.  It is nice to have a dealer  closer than Hermy's, Martins or Camp Hill again.

Yes I'm recovering but slower than I'd like.  Am going back to work on April 1st (thought it was a good day to start back) but my shoulder seems like it will be a lifetime of trouble.

Congrats on the new to you Tiger!  Hermy's is a good dealer although a little farther away than I like.  I really miss Capitol Area Triumph...they knew your name when you walked in and their prices for service were half what I've paid since they closed.  Don't know much about B&B but have been there to browse a few times. At 40ish it would have been a cold ride from Hermy's today.  I have a heated jacket and the heated grip wraps from Areostich cause  I'm not much for cold either.  Enjoy the new ride and hopefully your aches and pains will be few.

Not a bad ride, just a little windy but bike rides nice.   I'm definately not as cold friendly on the blood thinners but I'm a 365 day a year rider so I'm equiped for it even without heated clothes. One  issue of which I would have thought they would have caught.  There is a definate smell of coolant.  I could smell it after the test ride and said something to the salesman.  I assumed that they had topped it off and spilled a bit at the time but it still had that odor when I got home.   Will check b and b out today for some coolant but I suspect I'll be riding up to the BMW dealer in Lititz as it is blue coolant that is in there.

B&B has always done me decently but as with most dealers you pay for them to stay in business and build nice shops.  I think Capitols big problem was that Triumph is a tough bike to have as a sole major dealership and stay profitable.  Coupled with a Japanese big 4 or even another European model to keep the service center and parts counter full then maybe.  Off brands of scooters just doesn't cut it.

As for riding.  Once on my pelvis is just fine, shoulder a bit sore and hands hurt like he!! but no post tramatic stress or any other ills in my mine.  Just happy to be backon a bike 3 months after.

Nice looking Tiger there Benebob!  looks exactly like it did on Hermy's site.  i like to check his site out just for kicks and am amazed how much turn over they have for being out in No-whereville.  I agree that Capitol Area was limited on their sales by only having triumph (even though they had UM's and chinese scooters as you said). still miss them though.  glad to hear your back on the road.  maybe if it'll quit snowing long enough we'd get some riding in.  be safe. :wave

Just an update on the status of the hit and run coked out drunk driver who hit me.  Today was her second day in jail of a 11.5-23 month sentence  (of course she'll get out sooner with good behavior and will also get work release).  Only took 14 month from when she hit me to when she plead guilty.

I never forget what the father in Texas said after he killed the SOB that molested and killed his son. "At least I did something".......

I've simply moved on.  No point harboring hate as it just makes me a drag to be around (although I'm getting some ink on my bad shoulder  for my closure next week).  Still have 2 more surgeries on the horizon, a hip labrum tear and a shoulder labrum tear.  The hip will come in the spring and likely leave the bike unused for 3-6 months.  Still miss my 885i and even though the 955i is so much better and more refined, it just doesn't feel like "my bike".

Glad to see you're moving on Brother, I hope I have your fortitude if the day ever comes  :notworthy

I only wonder what other damage she might have done in that time.

This whole sorry story just reinforces the reality that a significant number of drivers in North America take no pride in the 'craft' that is operating a motor vehicle. Apart from the drunk drivers out there, now we are having to contend more and more with 'distracted' drivers who think it is acceptable to drive with a cell phone stuck to their ear.

And the really tragic thing is that this attitude starts right at the beginning of a novice drivers career. I've lost count of the number of times I have been verbally abused at the end of a road test by a driver who has not qualified, who berates me for pointing out that they sped through a controlled speed zone or made an unsafe turn at an intersection. They usually say that it should not be a big deal because "everybody does it".
