Title: slipping clutch
Post by: chappers on May 05, 2013, 06:10:07 PM
hi guys

i did an oil and filter change a few back, but since then ive noticed my clutch slips ,when i open the bike up hard .i used putoline dx4 10/40 semi synthetic . i have adjusted the clutch cable which helps a bit but not a lot, also noticed my clutch bite is right at the end of the lever, bikes a 2002 tiger with 21 thou on the clock. do you think i need to replace the oil again or could it be something else

cheers guys

Hi, be sure that the oil has the correct API class indicated by triumph and is good for oiled clutch as ours, sometimes there are slippy additives that can be good for motor but not at all for clutch, bye!

That oil is sold as motorcycle oil and there's no mention of friction modifiers (usually the giveaway).

If the clutch biteds right at the end of its travel it suggests there isn't enough free play (you need a couple of mm slack in the cable) or that maybe it's binding.

clutch cable is all ok , so after talking to a few people iam going down the replace clutch plates route, i also have a broken return spring on the arm that leads up from the clutch housing, so what id like to know is, i will need these items. clutch plates, new clutch springs, return spring, gasket set( how many will i need or do they come in a set} oil, plus filter. will i anything else ?

since iam a complete novice i will have someone watchin over me lol

I would be 100% sure the cable is not seized/frayed or in need of a lube before ordering a clutch kit.

cable is only 9 month old, as the return spring on the clutch arm is broken , i tend to get about 18 months out of it, but ill take it off and have a good look.
