mornin all, well today was supposed to see the startin of the tiger but all it does is click n nuffin else. can only get it to turn over by hand about a fraction of a turn backwards but just wont turn over forwards at all. has somthin fallen down from the alternator drive shaft, when it come out, to lock it up or is the engine no good ?
Mornin mate, did you try and turn it over when you first got it?
What work you done on it?
Have you tried it without the plugs in?
alright mate, no i didnt. its in the gearbox area. can move it bout an 18th of a turn then theres a loud clonk and it stops. im thinkin somthins fell off the alternator shaft or summink. so gunna take off the clutch n find out if its engine or box but either way the engines gotta come out n be stripped down. now i gotta find somehwere with space so i can pull it apart.
if the alternator shaft comes out while the engine is upright would anythin fall off and into the engine ?
the sprag clutch, will fall into the innards ...................
thats what i feared :BangHead
A mate had the same syptoms and the Alternator had disintegrated,he found this out after stripping the engine out of the frame and barking up most of the wrong trees!.He wished he had looked at the alternator first and save all the extra time and effort removing the engine and stripping it.
alternators all good fraser. engines out but cant strip it down as the tool i need is in denmark gotta see if i can get hold of one today. bloody triumph n their torx bolts
well engines in half, gearbox is out and the the bits that are supposed to be on the alternator shaft are on it and now its upside down it turns over. wtf jammed it up.
something broke loose and floating around?
not that i could see. the alternator shaft had broke the bolt on the clutch en so im wonderin if the starter gear had come off and jammed up ?

where is the bolt head for the clutch end alt shaft?
was in the shaft loose, where its supposed to be. jus broken
Are you sure the alternator spins freely and it's definitely not that that is causing the lockup?
alternators fine. im at a loss now, ive used all me knowledge up. anyone want a pile of tiger parts ?
Gotta do my brake pads tomorrow, then run out to bed them in so could pop over later?
I know you`re gonna hate me for asking, but it wasn`t in gear when you tried to turn it over?
Stranger things have happened...................... :augie

Yup, thats why i asked.................. :icon_redface:
nah wernt in gear mate. theres was a horrible clonkin sound when i tried to turn it over. but good news :icon_biggrin: took the engine to see my bike mechanic mate and he helped me get it together and now it turns over. the only thing we could think of, was the bolt that had broken on the alternator shaft either jammed somthin up or let the starter gear move enough to lock up. so switched the shaft around so broken bolt is at the alternator end. havnt replaced as i never had time to get one. so today im about to go out to the garage put the rest of the bits back on the engine and try to wrestle it in the frame n get it runnin today :thumbsup fingers crossed and here goes :wheel
:ImaPoser :ImaPoser :ImaPoser well, it wernt the broken bolt, or in gear but ive just found out what caused it to lock up. anyone care to take a guess.
Something simple?
Good news its turning over.
was beyond simple but i aint sayin yet. altho i will say it wernt down to stupidity or lack of knowledge on what i was doin but as lack of knowledge on triumph engines
You've got us all waiting with great expectation.............. :augie
:wheel well, nearly. it in, it turns over but theres no petrol gettin through to the cylinders. i cleaned the carbs out before i put em on. what did i forget to do ? itll run on easy start. i was hopin itd pull the petrol through but it didnt. :icon_scratch:
Flat battery?
C`mon, put us out of our misery.
i think ill run a cometition for a few days. winner gets a signed photograph of me on my bike and ill even sign it too :thumbsup :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
have carbs got petrol in? try undoing screws on float chambers to check
You were working on the wrong engine????? :BangHead
nope, right engine gav and ram, i checked the float bowls and they had petrol in. off out in the garage in a bit to rebuild the carbs n refit em and see if i can get it started tonight. fingers crossed

ahhhhhhh... Tigger has a Hard On? :bug_eye :ImaPoser Is that why the engine locked? :bad
I guess those emoticons mean you got her started?
I'm guessing it worked then :icon_rolleyes:
Looks like your lucks changing mate :thumbsup
yes its workin :D so i get to ride back to denmark on weds :wheel
as no one was anywhere near close to why the engine locked up, heres the answer. all triumph engines aint the same. the new engines covers are all flakey n crap lookin so i swapped over my black cases to the grey engine. however, the crank shaft on the new engine is differnt to the tiger one and so is the figure 8 engine case. the tiger crank has a smooth end and the new lump has a thing stickin out of the end of the crank. the new engines cover sound deadenin panel inside the cover is smaller than the tiger one. it was the crank on the new engines lump hittin a screw on the tiger casins sound deadenin panel so i didnt need to split the engine after all :BangHead
I think you deserve a salute for not chucking the lump in the river, which is what I'd have probably done at the first sign of trouble

thats what i thought :icon_wink:
:wheel :wheel it lives. all taxed and ready to go for a ride. be back later :icon_wink:
How have you got on with the re-calibration of your left foot/brain for the racing gearbox?? :kboom
nope. had quite a few wrong gear changes today :icon_lol: but ill get used to it.......eventually
