Title: Loosing oil FAST !! What do you suggest?
Post by: Danwarb on May 22, 2015, 05:56:53 PM
Hi guys,

I'm away for the week end and didn't have time to replace the clutch cover. It's got a tiny pin hole it. I poured in a new bottle of oil but I think the whole lot has drained out the hole so I'm running on hardly any oil.

I could begin to feel the clutch sliding more that usual before engaging. Is this a sign the clutch is going?

JB Weld, or similar, will fix that problem in a jiffy.

Thanks guys. Once my nerves settled I was thinking the same.

I've got here fine and the bike seems to still be operating as it should.

Do you think that as long as I get this hole filled and new oil in the bike that as it should be ok and that I haven't ruined the engine?

Did you notice oil pressure light? If not, maybe OK?? :icon_confused:

I run my Super3 with no oil once,to move it out of the garage whilst carrying out a service, but it was only for about a minute :icon_redface: Didn't do it deliberately,I'll add!

How are you checking the oil level?. Its important to remember the level should be checked with the bike upright, cold engine, and the dip stick screwed fully in, not resting on the top of the case.
Maybe not as bad as you think.

Regards

Phil

The oil light showed until I started the engine then it turned off. It didn't come back on the whole of the last journey?

You should be good to go in that case. I've heard of people using JB Weld to fix a cracked case, filing it smooth and painting it, then forgetting about it

Aahhhh . . . Happy days. I was worried.

I've actually bought another clutch cover plate so I only need a solution for an hours journey back home. I've met a gas engineer who's got self tapping screws and rubber washers so we aim to plug the hole today !

Just to state the obvious....... make sure the screw isn't long enough to catch anything behind the cover  :icon_salut:

Chewing gum will do to get you home. Chew it first of course!

Soap can also work.

You youngsters - don't know you're born!

You guys are brilliant !!

In the end the gas engineer had a 12mm long self tapper and a rubber washer. With a cordless we got it to tighten in the hole and the rubber washer to firmly tighten up over the hole. Amazing.

It's worked so well that for now I've left it and I'll spray the replacement clutch plate before replacing it.

Also with the bike filled up properly with oil she's so, so quiet. I've been SO lucky with this lesson as I really thought I'd begun overheating and damaging the engine.

Again thanks loads guys.

Another Tiger challenge won !
:thumbsup
