Title: Oil advice
Post by: JayDub on May 28, 2015, 09:15:31 PM
The service manual states API/SG, ...does this mean either?
It has the 'API'  bit but not the 'SG' spec.
I was wondering if anyone had used it in their steamer with any ill affects? i.e. clutch slip.

I don't want to start another oil debate, as we all have our personal preference, I've used this in other bikes and I like it.
I just want to learn from others' mistakes  :icon_biggrin:

API is American Petroleum Institute?? SG is the grade. Don't think you can buy that grade now, their all L ,M, N ?
But ID have no issues whatsoever using that oil! Shell are one of the best!

This is worth a go,I've used it a few times.

If it's the correct grade and says 'motorcycle oil' on the box you are good to go.

Thanks fellas, Thats pretty much what I would normally conclude, but being a steamer one can never be sure whether it could do something daft like alter the air intake volume or cause the tyres to deflate or sumfink  :icon_rolleyes:
I used this oil for the first time in an old GS550, the engine then sounded like the valves had just been shimmed - good stuff!
