Stripping the calipers on my 93 Steamer for overhaul but they have had a hard life. The outer face where the dust seal sits has received a fair amount of damage. Can they be refurbished ? :^_^ if not what are my options for replacements ?
Do you wanna chance it with brakes, probably not.
Ebay is the cheapest answer, there was a thread on here about discount new old stock steamer stuff a month or do ago. You might get lucky. Think the author was Threepot.
It was NeilD
here ya go

Thanks Gav.
New old stock at discounted prices sounds good. Don't want to pay an arm an a leg, been looking on Ebay but my searches haven't thrown much up and it's a risk with old second hand parts. Probably been asked a few times but what are the alternatives from other bikes ?
Ooh blimey. Try the search thingy as someone will have asked that before. To my knowledge the tiger ones are reasonably unique. The haynes manual certainly points out differences with other similar models.
If push comes to shove I have some spares you can borrow while you search for new if you like.
Thanks guys, downloaded the PDF :icon_biggrin:
I don't remember steamer calipers being on the list, just done a quick check and i think you're out of luck.
US site calmoto uses triumph part numbers and has a search box. Then when you've searched the P/N it tells you further down the page which models it fits. I think the caliper on the list that says it's for a tiger is an 885i model one.
There's always

Thanks nickcalne, that's a nice offer. I'm not in a major rush but will bear it in mind. I still have some work to do before she is ready for the MOT, the more parts I remove the longer the list is getting. As i expected from a bike that's been in a shed covered in hay for the last 10 years.
I have an ultrasonic hot water bath for cleaning bits, a caliper will fit in. However they look a bit chipped and may need more than just cleaning, but if you can get them to me I will put them in the bath.
there's one on eBay for £18.99!!!! quick!
Thanks for the offer Geoff :thumbsup
Threepot, can you email me the link, much appreciated
As has been mentioned, i`m sure the front caliper is unique to the Steamer, although i have a feeling i`ve read that the rear caliper from the Girly might be the same as one side? :^_^
:icon_eek: Which ocean did you say you found the bike in?
Front right and rear are the same caliper and pad (FA214)
Front left is opposite (FA215) also used as rear calipers for Hinckley Bonnevilles and the newer Trophy models (yes really, even with ABS)
These calipers were fitted, and still are I believe, to many Hondas of the period and possibly some Kawas, don't ask me which ones, I'm not that much of an anorak :nono keep quiet at the back and if anyone mentions indicators I'll be very cross :icon_rolleyes:
Their still using them!! :icon_scratch:
Can't remember the year but from memory Honda VN750 shadow, pads fit my early Girly which is the same caliper as one on the Steamer.
Yes here's a link to an e bay listing:

Thanks for the info chaps, plenty to get my teeth into now :thumbsup

Different one mate

So the early Girly calipers are different, since all three on my bike take that shadow pad.
Looks like it, it's not like Triumph to use something unique on a mainstream model though.
theres a few variations of bodies and pads across the ranges (from the 90's through to current models!) but the seals and pistons are common.. these are still showing as available on the world of triumph site at £28 each... listed as carb sprint r/h front but i'm pretty sure its the same as at least one steamer position, maybe have to swap the slider/mount bracket over... worse case its a set of seals, pistons, pins and rubbers for £28 :)

theres also a thread on the Girly section regarding what other seals etc fit... going back to the original post, i'd lob those and find some better ones to re-seal..
:iagree not even much use as maritime vessel immobilisers, not heavy enough.
Plan is to order the (carb sprint r/h front caliper) on the recommendation of NeilD, fingers crossed that has the front RH sorted. Plan for the LH front is to pick up a slightly used explorer rear as it looks the same. What ya think ?
as i said, not actually tried one of those calipers on a steamer, however worse case is a cheap set of parts to rebuild another caliper :)
In for a penny in for a pound !!! I've taken the plunge and ordered the caliper today, it appears from speaking to the parts chap at my local dealer people are buying the calipers for the sole reason of using the pistons and seals as its so cheap.
Should be ok with the Dora rear on the LHF. Odd, a set of stainless pistons with seals and red grease is only £45 :icon_scratch:
The advice paid off Lads :thumbsup new calipers turned up in the the post today and what a result :icon_biggrin: For the front right and rear I ordered 2 carb Sprint calipers P/N 2020700-T0301 at the bargain price of £28 each which by surprise also came fitted with pads. All I did was change the slider/mount brackets. For the front left I picked up a second hand 2012 Tiger Explorer rear caliper which is a direct fit, no need to even change the slider/mount bracket as it's identical. Even treated the old girl to a new set of brake lines.
Picture shows the calipers with changed slider/mount brackets ready to fit to the steamer. Thanks for all the input chaps
That's what's known of as a 'result'!!
Great news and a bargain :thumbsup
Now you can stop, let's get her :wheel
Excellent work, I feel a trip to the dealer coming on for a new rear caliper!

Do it sooner rather than later as some of the parts are being superseded with different part numbers and the prices are being hiked back up to retail.
Popped in today, they had 5 in stock, fitted and bled this afternoon Neil.
Thanks for doing the research. :thumbsup
It's kinda rude not to buy them at that price :icon_wink:, fitted all my calipers tonight but its going to have to wait a while now until I can find the time to fill with fluid and bleed them all up. Glad you got yours sorted Gav.
:thumbsup good news... if anyone needs one and find that theyve run out, i'll probably sell the one i have as ive fitted a set of brembos to the front of my TBird and i have enough seals/pistons in stock :)

What's the news? Hope you haven't thrown away the old calipers yet, I know a man that could use the mounting plates if you've still got them.
