Title: 2016 Tiger MEET - where?? Who???
Post by: Bixxer Bob on August 11, 2015, 02:18:47 PM
Seeing as the USA thread is dying of outside influences, we ought to have a UK plan and pick an event lead.

I'll run this for a couple of weeks for ideas then put up a pole.  Nearest the hole gets to lead  :ImaPoser

I'll lead off with Geoff's offer of Northumberland,  I know it fairly well and think it'll be up there with Scotland and Yorkshire.  That's you stitched up Geoff, and if you're leading, the rest can't eff off without you can they???  :bad

:iagree even if the US trip works out, there should still be a UK meet. Geoff, if you had a leg st stand on it's been kicked out from under you. Seconded  :thumbsup

Went through Weardale and Northumberland on the Scotland trip. It was amazing. Can't wait to go back.

So Northumberland is out in front, lets give it a few days to see who else chimes in and then we can decide.

Anywhere off my little rock is great. I might have to make it a day longer next year though to make the most of it.

Ted has just bought a brand new S3 so he's keen, unfortunately Mo has put the R3 on the market and last I heard, he was considering a GS1200, so I've told him to expect a black ball from the TT.com boys!!! :pottytrain2

I'm up for either Northumberland or the emerald isle atm, As I've missed several chances of Ireland before, and like the sound of it.
I've been to Northumberland many years ago, but I can't remember anything about it :icon_redface:

Title: Re: 2016 Tiger MEET - where?? Who???

Advantages: Well I can offer steep twisty narrow roads with grass down the middle, and fords at the bottom. Fast sweeping A roads, and the odd road that is only available at low tide, good pubs and probable crap weather. The Cheviot sheep are a breed known for there stubborn nature and hardiness , so good luck with them.
Disadvantage: There is no ferry crossing, there is just no feeling of excitement like you get riding a bunch of bikes off a ferry to start a trip.
In my experience this usually means riding off the ship with a minging hangover and getting no further than the garage in Ijmuiden to fill up with petrol and Red Bull with paracetomol before heading down Dutch motorways in horizontal rain.
Riding off the ferry in Larne is still a thrill,  although usually more sober as it is a short daytime crossing, and the Irish rain is just as horizontal as Dutch.
We can do one place this year, and the other the next, let me know if you want to come to Northumberland, if not I will happily go to Northern Ireland.

I beg to differ Geoff, we have to do one to get anywhere interesting!!!!  Problem is, it's too short to get a hangover.

Surprised no one has mentioned Scotland. Western highlands is a great place for bikes with optional ferry rides. Our last trip from Gateshead comprised, Arran, Mull, Skye, Ullapool, Tyndrum, home.

Also loved Ireland, great roads, courteous drivers and an odd tasting dark ale. Headed North from Larne to Ballintoy for an overnight stay at Whitepark bay hostel and stuck to the coast as much as possible to travel west to Letterkenny. Then south to Donegal, Sligo and an overnight stop at Arrowrock lodge. South again to Galway via Westport and Clifden. Carried on via the coastal route to spend a night at Katie O'Connors at Kilrush. The following day we caught the ferry to Tarbert and southeast to Cork for obligatory stop to snog the Blarney. Headed North and stayed at Toms hostel Mooncoin before a fast run and last night in Belfast International hostel (off road secure parking), tremendous night out and early ferry from Belfast. very memorable trip, we also had good weather for the majority of it.

Yes, recent Tiger convert but that does explain why Scotland didn't feature as a discussion point in this post.

But seriously camping? Way to hardcore for me.......... give me a days riding, a nice cheap hostel/bunkhouse/backpackers with cooking facilities and a few snakebites before bed.................. :sleepy1

Just returned from a family holiday in Woolacombe (12 adults, 8 kids and 4 dogs in one very large house).  Very relaxing :icon_confused:
We fought our way home yesterday up the M5 along with millions of other tin cans on wheels, it only took 4 hours back to Bristol :icon_sad:
Going to try and get a day off on the bike in wales on Monday.  Yes I know it's the Bank holiday, but it doesn't matter much over there.  The roads are still pretty quiet.

On another topic, thanks for the Spanish link Spud.  We had a holiday near Malaga last year with friends and are returning early October. My mate Martin suggested we ride down on the bikes which seemed a good idea at the time.  The ferries, fuel and accommodation will cost about 3-4 times the cost of the flights and I am not sure looking at the maps that it's going to be a nice ride.  We plan about 2-3 days to ride down from Santander.  Any advice from anyone would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Yes, thanks John, we intend to take the smaller roads. Just wondered if anyone in the forum had done the ride and could make any suggestions.
By the way, I bought a new centre stand. Getting it fitted next Friday.
Cheers

Holyhead to Dublin today which I think is still high season £55 and return is £50 in two days time. That has no accommodation and is just from a quick google

Same quote for Pembroke to Rosslare, again no accommodation. Fast boat seems to be £70 each way. Oh and the Pembroke is a four hour crossing

Holyhead, £55 is what I came up with, The only thing about Ireland vs Northumberland for me (depending on where in Ireland we stay) is, less riding time on route  :icon_frown:
Its about 4.5 hours from here to Northumberland and 20 mins to Holyhead! - but that's just me being selfish  :bad... then again - most of that would be motorway  :Topes

I am in the process of heading north on the California/Oregon coast (admittedly on four wheels) after having driven south to Lala land at the end of last week. OMG the roads are freakin' mind blowing! I've ridden most of it but the bits that are new to me are spectacular. Definitely worth a return visit on two wheels.

Just sayin'  :icon_wink:
