Title: Steamer rear shock gone?
Post by: Mudhen on May 17, 2005, 03:49:28 AM
Went camping/riding this past weekend...and I think my rear shock has gone belly-up.  Last weekend I turned it up as hard as it would go...felt better.  Now if I put my gloves on the seat the rear tire hits the wheel well...(slight exaggeration maybe).

Can it be recharged?

On the plus side, the Steamer only hit the deck a couple times, and we came away with some cool pics...(http://mudhen.smugmug.com/photos/14053965-M.gif)

Ok, maybe I got carried away...

Any info on the rear shock would be greatly appreciated.  I plan on going with a Wilbers at some point...maybe it's time...

Thanks!

Hey MH,

Nice to see some pics of Steamer out in the wild!  Despite all the work I've done on mine, it has become a garage queen lately due to work, kids, and the fact that we're now moving (still in SJ tho').

Rear shock:  the prev owner of my '98 did in fact replace the rear shock.  His pockets must have been deep 'cause the OEM unit was over $600!!!  AND, I think the replacement unit is slightly longer than the original because my rear wheel is barely off the ground when bike is on the centerstand.  Function-wise it seems ok but I actually haven't played with the adjustments yet or even the pre-load yet.  The Wilbers may be the way to go.
