Title: Helmet/action camera
Post by: London_Phil on January 31, 2016, 03:23:50 PM
Hi Guys

Nearly that time of year when I get to choose a prezzy for myself, interested in any comments on a helmet/bullet cam.
Looked at the GoPro Session, nice and compact, but need one that mimics my Car DVR, loop recording, and ability to run external power without compromising weatherproofing.
Roadhawk Ride + looks like a contender.
Comments?

regards

Phil

Couple of questions.... What you gonna do with the output and are you going to use it for anything else?

... then you can save a lot of money not getting a go pro.

Lots of others around but I would say in my limited experience that if you want to make a 'film' or have other accessories for related uses then you have to go for a go pro.

Otherwise does it need to be 1080p, superwhizzy wotsits etc Russians have been making brilliant dashcam videos on rudimentary kit for years if you have a look on youtube.

There is a thread on advrider from a guy who does alot of videos and he answers questions for people.
You can also watch reviews and such on utube to get a feel for one camera vs another.

Saw these at the Spaldingshow a couple of weeks ago:

http://www.organisemycar.com/shop/mycrocam/mycrocam-720-hd/

Claimed waterproof (rain, not diving) and a tiny, tiny thing.   Excellent footage from it; my worry was battery life, which the chap demostrating said was about an hour and a half.  They sell an external USB power pack which you could slip in your pocket for longer trips, but then you have to leave the USB socket flap open so, for me, the whole thing was starting to unravel at that point.  I suppose you could carry a couple of back up batteries though.

DEspite that I liked it because, although my GoPro gives excellent footage mounted on the bars and the battery is much bigger, I'd never stick the GoPro on a helmet.

One thing 've just I noticed having looked up the web address, and it was the same when I bought some lightweight scaffold some years back; special show price doesn't always mean cheaper.  The £79 one on the website was being sold at £120 reduced to £89.  At shows, it always pays to check the web price before parting with money.  Pity I didn't do it then, I could have taken him aside, tell him he's busted and negotiated a good deal to keep my mouth shut  :bad

There are a few go pro clones around that are getting good reviews and a lot cheaper. Might want to have a look at Foxeye for an on bike system.
