Does anyone have a reliable method of removing the glass - intact - from an OEM steamer mirror? The type with a plastic body.
I don't want to trash another one.

Nice, but I'd like to keep things standard. ... I'm a bit like Sin with his indicators :icon_confused:
I've never tried, is there any reason ? :5moped
I found hitting a Carrion Crow at 50 mph works. But I drew the line at digging out of the remains of the crow, so I cannot be certain that it was totally intact.
A friend of mine smashed his on a sea gull :5moped

I have a nice extended mirror on the right, and a rusty standard on the left, I also have a good spare extended one with a broken glass, and therefore would like to make one good extended one to match... bet your'e sorry you asked now :icon_wink:
@Geoff... It could only happen to you mate - when was the last time you saw an optician? :augie
What is it with you lot? Crows, Seagulls, Nick trying to take out a sheep and Sin squeezing the guts out of dead hedgehogs... leave the wildlfe alone!
And pheasants :BangHead the only radon one of us hasn't head butted a Dodo is because they're a bit rare. When they perfect cloning direct from dna remains, I'll probably be the first one to add a Dodo to my road kill list.
How about soaking it in very hot water and trying to prise the inner ring out. Thought about it but never tried it.
no I'm never sorry, I've always been nebby :5moped
Nosey
:icon_biggrin: Which region does that hail from then?

Went through Barnard Castle yesterday, not a good move in the end as they had closed the A66 and the whole town was at a standstill

No not yet, haven't had a chance to try Sins method with hot water (I need to pluck up the courage too).
More road works I think the council's probably have to spend the money from Europe before they have to give it back.
My falosity is its best not to think about doing jobs just do it.
Sorry about spelling.

oops, sorry :icon_redface:
If you just want the mirror part out in one piece and don't care about the plastic housing at all then....what about chemicals?
Plastic will melt when in contact with the right type of chemical mix.
Like the plastic box I put under my tank when the petcock was leaking. Came back to half a plastic box swimming around freely on the floor.
I don't know what will happen to the mirror part, so make sure first. But perhaps drop the mirror in a drum of petrol?
Or Dichloromethane may work (paint stripper / methylene chloride).
Polystyrene dissolves in benzene or toluene.
Polyurethane can dissolve in acetone (CH3)2CO.
Polyethylene is resistant to most organic solvents.
This is as far as I googled around on the subject, double check to make sure if you try anything.
Or most stuffs will melt of heat. If the melting point between the mirror part and the plastic is big enough you can try that. Fire, heated air, other heated/boiling fluids.
Or perhaps take a Dremel and work really slow with a small piece of file/cutting bit.
Thanks P3aK, thats possibly the easiest way, I think I was just avoiding wrecking a potentially useful mirror casing... I just hate to throw anything away:icon_redface:
@ bemusedinsojo, Thanks but the shipping cost could be more than the cost of a new mirror :thumbsup
Just use the same method I posted for opening my tach. Thread here someplace👍
