What are you guys/gals paying for the 12.000 mile service, including parts & labor. I was quoted $750 +/-, by an Atlanta area dealer. I can do pretty much everything myself except the valves & throttlebody sync. I'm not even sure what the throttlebody sync is and what it involves. I was thinking about doing everything myself except the two items mentioned above. I'm not sure how much this will effect my price?
I've just done mine myself - ignored the throttle body check as it's running very well, and found all the valve clearances within spec so didn't need the special tool. Total cost around £40 for oils and filter (didn't change the air filter as we don't see much dust around here).
At least if you do it yourself you know it's done.
When the Batesburg SC dealer re opens after the 1st of the year I will get a quote but I know it will be no were near 750.00 bucks if it is I will buy the shop manuel and do it myself and also will be my last Triumph if that were to be the case. Was this a Triumph dealer that quoted that price ?
I asked our locail dealer in onger in essex england and was told after parts would be looking at £450.00 mine is 1996 carb mod but just done 12,000, So got us both sides of the pond.
I just did mine myself, valves checked in spec and the FI balance is easy if you've ever done a multi carb bike, same basic procedure.
Yes, it was a Triumph dealer in Atlanta. It sounded extremely steep to me. I my swing by there and talk to them in person.
$400 in Virginia.
$370 in Chicago (MCC). That was last year though.
675.00 - 700.00 in B'ham, Alabama.
Taking the piss in alabama $675 - $700, Might by all the bookes and move out to alabama got to be thick if they are paying that, $1400 a day pay Had better. :smt100
Batesburg SC $375.00 to $400.00 If you purchased your bike from them they dicount a aditional 10% incase any one is interested in these folks which I must say after all the years I have rode these are great people that do very good by there customers. Phone # 1 803 532 0881 owners name is Jeff
It makes we wonder here in the US at the wide range in prices to
perform the 12K service. Is it possible that the 700.00 service in
Alabama and in GA is more extensive and more thorough than
the service done say in Chicago. You would think they would be guided by a manual and the service performed would be exactly the same and the amount of time to perform this service would also be dictated by Triumph. The only difference would be in the hourly charge to perform the service.
Acording to my dealer this service takes five hours, plus parts there shop rate is 65.00 per hour :?:
I just spoke to my Triumph service tech here in the MidWest.
he said 12,000 mile service is first major service and runs about $350.
I asked him about time ... he said about 4 hours.
My 12,000 is due ... so I'll find out for certain real soon!
$675 ..... does a full body massage and drinks come with that?
I just called my dealer he thinks he may have quoted the rate of
working on the 1050 engine and not the 955. He's at 75 and hour
though so that'll add up qiuckly, I'll post back when he checks
into it more. I asked him about the massage and drink he said
sure I could have plenty of water and they usually use a hammer
during there massage..........no thanks :-)
He should at least give you a kiss
After sharpening his pencil the Birmingham Triumph dealer figured
on 600.00 for the complete 12k service. He said that should include
all parts, oil change, but no sugar etc. That's for my 2005 Tiger.
That's better than 700 but still high.
I was in B'ham last week to visit my kids , is your dealer the one just off I - 20 That sells BMW also ? If it is, he is trying to make you pay BMW prices. It would be worth your Time , not to mention "the fun of the ride" to find another dealer to do your work.
Yes that's the one but it's off of I459 not I20. It's a great dealership I have several good friends there and I know the owner so I'm torn in between that and having the work done locally by an ace mechanic in town that has quoted me 250 for labor, plus parts. It's like I could have the work done there and he would throw in a set of tires or a rear shock for the same price I would pay at the dealership just for the tune up. I'm a poor guy and have to watch every penny but I am also loyal to friends to, so it's a tough decision for me. I also need tires and would like the front springs replaced to so I am looking at about a 500 dollar difference in the end between the two and that's very noticable to my budget.
Come to Columbia I'll put you up I have a big house, set it up at the Batesburg shop. Thats a 6 hour ride by the way. However friends or no friends if the guy who wants 250, well all I can say is money talks. But watch That Triumph does not void your two year safety net.
Thanks for the offer on the visit and the reminder about the warranty
stuff to. The guy has the highest mechanic certification that you can have but that may mean nothing when push comes to shove over a
warranty claim. I'll weigh that risk into the equasion when it's in
need of service. I am still about 1K short of the needed 12K service.
Thanks again,
Just had my 12,000 miler done on my 05 at Laguna Motorcycles in Maidstone and paid £420.
Cost a lot but the service was excellent, had a nice newTriumph Sprint loan bike for the day and it's certainly made a difference to the way the Tiger runs!
 WOW hope they washed and waxed it for you ! Well you at least got to ring out a Sprint. My dealer lets us use a Speed Tripple 955 but it's a blast to ride.
I just had the 12,000 mile service done on my '06 Tiger two weeks ago at Haps Cycle Sales in Sarasota, Florida.
I had already done an oil and filter change myself so wasn't charged for that. Haps did the rest of the 12K service, including replacing the fork oil with 15w instead of 10w fork oil, checking the valves but no adjustment needed, and downloading the off-road tune, etc.
Total cost was $247.00
Brooks , what oil are you using ? The four liter bottle is 68 bucks at my dealership
William,
I'm using Mobil One Racing XT full synthetic oil which is recommended by Triumph. Here in Tampa, AutoZone has it for $8.50 per quart. I'm also using Triumph OEM oil filters.
I think I'll ride to Florida for my 24,000mile service.
Quote from: "JRO"I think I'll ride to Florida for my 24,000mile service.
I tried to get my bike in for its first service at Atlanta Triumph and was told they couldn't get me into the shop for 6 weeks so I took it up to Chattanooga and was pleased with the service. Depending on the cost for the 12k mile service, I may end up going to Fla as well. Might as well make a weekend out of it, would be cheaper than some of the quoted prices in this thread.
Arizona Superbike (formerly CycleMoto) in the Phoenix, AZ metro area charges in the neighborhood of $800 for a major service. They did my 12K service, but I just finished the 24 K service. There's a lot of work involved with a complete major service and I would question those who say they are doing it for $250, or even $500. Parts alone (oil, filter, coolant, brake fluid, spark plugs, fuel filter, fork oil, gaskets and such will run you more than half that). Plus, there's a special tools involved with swapping valve shims (which will cost a little) and unless you can improvise you'll need to obtain the tool. If something is discovered that needs replaced (fork seals, water pump, hoses, or whatever, that will be an added expense). Labor at $65-$85 an hour times at least 5 hours, plus parts puts it way beyond $250. Just stripping the Tiger down to the frame and motor is time comsuming in itself and then you'll need to do the actual service work after that. Unless you have some pro bono arrangement with the $250 shop I'd be very leary and cautious, IMHO. If you take your time and have moderate mechanical skills and the tools you can do it yourself. A shop manual will help as will ordering the parts you'll need prior to actually starting the work. Sees the dealer almost never has all the parts you need and will have to order something.
As I mentioned earlier in my post about the $250 12K service, I had changed the oil and filter myself ( about $35 in parts), and the valves were checked and didn't need adjustment.
I had forgotten that the air filter was cleaned, not replaced because it was not necessary so that might have been another $35 savings? As it happens I was wrong about the cost of my recent 12K service on my Tiger. It was $231, not $247 as I thought. My bad.
Here are the actual charges for the 12K service, without oil change or filter:
3- spark plugs (DPR8EA-9 $ 2.74 @ ..............$ 8.22
0- air filter $ 33.99 @...............$ 0
1 DOT 5.1 Brake fluid $ 7.47 @...............$ 7.47
2 HP Coolant Qt 50/50 $ 3.99 @ ..............$ 7.98
2 Fork Fluid 15W $ 10.72@ ..............$ 21.44
Shop Supplies $ 4.00@..............$ 4.00
2.8 Hours Labor $ 65.00@..............$ 182.00
Total:..........................$ 231.11
Certainly had a valve adjustment been needed then the labor cost and shims required would add to the cost but would the total bill be as much as $800 ? Not likely.
BTW, Haps sells BMW, Honda and Triumph motorcycles and their sales and service for these brands is well known in west central Florida. I've been a happy customer for 16 years having also ought two BMWs from them in the past.
:o Talking to Jeff the owner of Batsburg Triumph , Brooks is spot on so if some one is paying 800 bucks for the 12 K check I hope you got a kiss with it.
As long as you're happy with what you get and have full faith and confidence in who's doing the work, I guess that's what counts. As mentioned, doing it yourself will save you even more. Might also throw a fuel filter, gasket and a new radiator cap into the mix, as well as servicing the chain, tweaking the throttle body sync and any fi tuning that might be required. Bring more $ when west of the Mississippi, evidently. . .
:( well maybe so....in Japan two years ago I paid over 5 bucks for coke and that was a low price ??? min wage there at that time was $16.00 a hour.
It may well be that prices are higher in Arizona than they are in West Central Florida. I know for a fact that the 12K service would have cost at least $100 more for the exact amount of work at the closer Tampa dealership than it did in Sarasota.
I did my 600 mile service at the Tampa shop , where I bought the 06 Tiger, for $213. My 6K service at Haps was $195 but that included mounting and balancing two tires. Go figure!
I've had work on previously owned 1996 R1100RT ( 98,000 miles) and 2004 R1150RT (20,000 miles) BMWs done at both dealerships and Haps is less expensive in hourly rate as well as parts costs. Haps is more of a mom and pop place, rather than a BMW boutique or huge Powersports type of dealership.
Over the years I've come to trust their work completely and enjoy their friendship. They'll even mount tires bought somewhere else for a reasonable fee.
During the this recent 12K Tiger service the service manager offered his pristine personal BMW R100RT as a loaner if I wanted to ride around town while waiting for my bike to be serviced. During the 12K service Haps also balanced the throttle bodies, checked the idle CO level, checked for stored DTCs, changed the coolant, adjusted the chain, etc.
They didn't replace the fuel filter because that's not called for until the 24k service.
I can't recommend Haps in Sarasota enough. If anyone here on this list wants to ride to Sarasota for service, let me know and I'll ride down with you and introduce you to the good people at Haps.
 I pass your way to my folks place all the time They live in Punta Gorda so you never know when I may just look you up if just for the ride.
You're welcome to visit anytime, William.
Last week I passed near your place on my way up to West Virginia on a Tiger trip. Went through Saluda on SC 121. Coming home I avoided Tropical Storm Barney by going west from Beckley WV to Johnson City Tenn. then south throught Asheville, NC and into SC at Anderson then.
With the stock pipe and the newly installed off-road tune I averaged 45mph.
Come on down, get a service at Haps and do the back roads to Punta Gorda ! Take home some of that cheap oil too ! #8^)
8) I was in the area of NC you just rode thru last week , last week also, I did see one of those rare cats too....a black Tiger! I ride those mountains all the time on any given weekend. I also have a vacation home in Helen GA and ride the GA triangle all the time as written in Rider mag.
That could have been me. I have a black '06 Tiger. I passed through the west side of Asheville on Sunday, June 3rd.
99% it was you, did you see a blue 06?
I didn't see a blue '06. I was southbound on 19 from Johnson City, 240 around the west end of Asheville, I-26 south from Asheville to 25.
I had a Givi topcase, MotoFiz seat pack with red bungee net. I was wearing an older black First Gear Kilimanjaro jacket, grey Darien Light pants and a silver helmet.
Small world !
I-26 is east and west I was going west you were going east (south east) The bike I saw had a top box much like the one on my bike which looks like a Givie but is not. Yep I think it was you.
You're right, I was going southeast towards Columbia. I had left Beckley WV that morning and was swinging west on 19 through Johnson City and Asheville to avoid any remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. I only got a few light sprinkles that morning.
I wish I had seen you as I hadn't seen another Tiger for the entire 2,000 mile trip !
:D Just got the 12 K done at Batesburg Thriumph SC total charge 306.00 and they provided the Triumph check list and all details of the servise.
That's a good deal and what a 12K service should cost.
 Yep even got to use the owners Speed Tripple for the day, Darn is that thing fast ! Fast but not for a 60 + year old man on a bumpy road I think my butt is still talking to me...LOL
A Speed Triple as a "loaner" bike. Now that's an even better deal !
