Title: Ticking Noise
Post by: Bliker on May 01, 2007, 05:17:24 AM
The last couple of days I've noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine. I notice it the most right after I start the bike up and then it seems to fade a little as the bike warms up. I've done all the service due at 12,000 miles except the valves and throttle body sync. I'm planning on taking it into a dealer  this weekend. Could the sound be coming from the valves, any ideas?

Probably not valve noise.   When valves have problems on a shim-type bike, they close up - just the opposite of what you are thinking, when you hear this noise.  In other words, they don't make the kind of valve noise you are thinking of, like most valves.

At 14,000+ miles, I'll bet it's not time for valve adjustment, although they do need to be checked.  I did mine at 12K, and they were fine.  Others HAVE needed adjustment, however.

Oh brother that allmost makes me cry.

The chance it is what happened to me is probably REALY slim. so DONT panic.

From looking around what happened to me seems to have happend to just 4 bikes so far made in 2003-2005.

Early small end and rod failing.

Started as a tapping noise, wasnt realy loud at certain revs but turned loud affter 4k.

JUST managed to get mine back last week affter a total rebuild and replaced rods small and big ends. cost? £1200

Probably just a pushrod.

I just talked to the dealer that I want to use in the Atlanta area, and the first opening is on the 29th. There are a couple of other dealers in the area but I don't know anything about them. I'm not sure if I'll continue to ride it or not.

I dropped the Tiger off at the dealer Saturday. As soon as they heard the ticking noise they suggested an exhaust leak. They are going to check it out while doing the service. I'm hoping it's just a gasket or small crack, that can be welded. They looked up the price of a new header pipe and it was over $800. I couldn't believe the cost. Hopefully it won't come to that.

The exhaust should be easy to repair as it's stainless steel so wont rust away like most jap things Iv dealt with in the past some have been paper thin welder just blows even bigger holes though  ](*,)

If they do need to remove the front pipe the tank and rad have to be removed to get at it and may well be expensive to get it done most likely.

Also get some stainless studding instead of the standard steel crap Iv recently done mime meself the originalls sieze up wonderfull so at a later date could prove fatal and expensive if one snapped in the head  [-o<

The ticking noise seems to be fixed. I had the valves checked , a fuel injection service, and new gaskets put in the exhaust.  My MPG also went back up to 45+. The MPG had dropped to the high 30's. We went on a ride in the N. Ga. mountains this weekend, 2 up, and hit 46 MPG for the day.

Was it just an exhaust leak?

That's what they thought. They replaced the gaskets and the ticking is gone.
