Allright, help me out here.
We've got our tickets for the
http://www.redbullindianapolisgp.com/ (http://www.redbullindianapolisgp.com/)
next year. I tell my wife a couple of weeks ago "We could ride to Little Rock one day and the rest of the way the next (1050 Miles)".
So after riding the Tiger the last couple of weeks she says
"You know we could get an "Iron Butt" award for riding up there in one day"!
Gotta love the little lady.
So who's gone a thousand in day?
Jim
I did it last weekend.
I rode the Tiger from Watkinsville, Georgia to Tallulah, Louisiana and back... just to do an Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000 (1000 miles in less than 24 hours). I did 1056 miles in 18 hours and one minute.
Go to the IBA website and download and print the various forms you'll need if you want to have your ride verified and receive a certificate.

Your sweetie is going to ride the back seat of a Tiger for 1000+ miles?
Ooh-kaaaaaay...

Yes...She's already complained about the footpegs not being low enuff....
I've seen footpeg lowering kits.....anyone with any experience with these?

58.67 miles per hour average. Not an easy thing to do. Short stops, no rest. You have my respect.
My buddy Jim & I rode 1147 miles in one day from Hiawassee, GA to Nebraska: '06 Tiger & '04 Tiger.
No problem.
My wife put 600 miles in one day on the back of
the Tiger: Rain - Snow- Sleet - Ice ... brutal wind.
But if you are from 'somewhere over the rainbow'....
what's the big deal . . . wait for a tornado.

A 500-600 mile day 2 up will tell a lot and help work out the kinks. If things are a bit uncomfortable, it only gets better after 1000. The ironbutt site and forum http://www.ironbutt.org/forum/default.asp (http://www.ironbutt.org/forum/default.asp) has lots of good info. You could ask if some one has done SS1000 2 up and are they still talking....

For the Kamiah Ride in last summer I rode from Fargo to Idaho in one 100+ degree day. On the way back I rode from Kamiah to Fargo via Great Falls.
Both easily 1000+ miles. The Tiger eats miles easily.

When I found my '89 FJ it was for sale in KS. With only 7K miles on it I just couldn't resist flying out there to get it and ride her home. That was back in 2001. Kansas City Kansas to Schenectady NY in 20 hours. Stopping for Gas and a Stretch every 200 miles. One pit stop at a Burger King somewhere in OH. The last 6 hours was in the pouring rain. Up until that part it was a piece of cake! :)
Hey PitOrz....
You need to hook up with Mike Cain somewhere near Palmyra, NY.
A great guy... Loves his Tiger:
mcain3@rochester.rr.comTell him Jerry passed along his e-addy.
This is a SIC group!
Will do! Thanks for the heads up.

Now that sounds like fun :D :D :D
It was fun but it was also not fun  The bike was pristine when I picked it up. Never saw the rain, not once. Then this? I slept for about 2 hours then was out in the driveway washing it. OCD? yeah...
In case anyone cares... here she is in all her glory...

Done a thousand miler twice, both times with my other half on the back mid-eighties on an FJ1200,and two years ago on the Tiger although it was 1050 and it included a ferry crossing in 16 hours.
Oddly enough after that trip bought Gel seats did a couple of 600 miles days neither of our backsides have never recovered, they were sold and went back to the originals.
Nice looking FJ !

I'm running a large Airhawk pad on top of my gel seat and mein heinie felt just fine after the thousand-miler. I highly recommend the Airhawk.
One of the keys to a comfortable ride is to have a seat that actually
throws your hips/pelvis fwd. This puts a natural arch in your lower back,
eliminating 'compression' of your lower vertabrae. At the same time it
takes the 'dead weight' off the back part of your butt. The result is a more
upright posture and 'lighter' in the saddle.
My Corbin is OK... on the 1100 mile ride... it was 'hard' by the time we were ½ way thru... I may strip the top cover, grind it down in a few spots,
then pop a thin layer of automotive, high density foam over the top.
Both of us of found the stock seat fine,we just got carried away reading stuff about the Gel seats and went and bought some,2/300 miles they were fine but after that jeeze!!!.
Hey Pitorz,
I too, have the highly desirable Tigger/FJ combo. I've done 1000 mile days on both but on tigger have completed a 1000 mile dirt/bitumen day which was hard work.
I'm planning on a 1000 miler on the FJ next wednesday, riding home to Brisbane from Melbourne.
But.......never tried it with a pillion. If you manage the trip uninjured and still married you must qualify for some sort of crazy award!
Good luck
I did a saddlesore in '04 from NH to Chicago. 1100 miles in 19 hours...on my GS Adv. Rode out Thursday for a buddies wedding on Saturday...by the time of the wedding I was just learning the meaning of 'monkey butt'. The next morning I had to ride the 1k miles back home...SUCKED...
Don't think I could do it on the Steamer. But like what you're saying TT - I wonder about that leaning slightly forward thing...my back isn't what it used to be.
my gal is good for about 30 miles on the back... Then the pee stops begin. Which turn into pee / smoke stops... It'd take me a week to hit 1000 with her along.
I've done a bunch of 1000milers on my tiger and on my Alaska trip this summer averaged 800 mile days getting up there .
I have an Alaska sheepskin butt pad and it;'s the best 50bux I've ever spent.
No aches or pains and this after some serious back issues with torn discs and trapped nerves , but I'm a gym rat and probably in the best shape I've ever been in , help stops the rot so I can keep riding till I die
I've got the Triumph gel seat on mine and it's pretty comfy but not nearly as comfy as the Corbins that I have on my two FJ's. I was thinking of trying the Bead Rider thingies. Anyone ever used those? My "long" rides are in the 400 mile range, all back roads which usually equates to 8 or 9 hours in the saddle. The gel seat keeps me comfy for about half of that.

Still waiting, big boy! (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/aetsch/cheeky-smiley-025.gif)
Anyone looking for aftermarket seat:
I'm on my 2nd Corbin. They build a fine seat.
Russel Day Long would be another top choice ( more pricey )
Rick Mayer Saddle is also a top notch seat.
Zoombie, how does your alaska sheepskin fit. I bought one and the straps are all wrong. Looks like it would fit a KLR. Anxious to use, but a rework is in order, what a pain in the, hey I thought that is what I was trying to prevent!

Fits fine , straps are kinda wonky but most of the time I'm sitting on it so I could care less , me arse is very happy tho after 1000 miles , no rigor mortis setting in to me cheeks

 Not
THAT kinda Stretch! Doh!!
Dammit.
Just thought I'd revive this one. After Stretch talked about getting his ride certified I got thinking.... just sending the paperwork from my ride off today.
I like that Corbin on your FJ Pitortz, the standard seat plus a sheepskin on Frank grew teeth about an hour after each fuel stop.
The partial dirt 1000 miler you did sounds awesome, Adv. I read a report one time of a group that did a 'Dusty Buns 1000'...that would be awesome. Almost like the Baja 1000 I guess...just less speed :D
Here in the northeast US it would be impossible, though...just not enough dirt around anymore. Maybe up in Canada or out west...

Thanks, that's actually my 'old' one. I bought it in '86 and it has somewhere in the neighborhood of 75K miles on it. Still looks and feels great. I actually noticed a tiny tear underneath where the seat rubs on the frame rail. I met Mike Corbin at the Americade in Lake George back in '88 and showed him the seat. He took out a business card and wrote on the back "Replace this FJ seat at anytime if tear expands". Signed it and shook my hand. Now, I never tried to do anything with that card because the tear never got any worse in almost 20 years. Seemed like a nice stand up guy though.
Pitortz, I had to wait 12 months for a cheap Corbin to turn up for Tigger, I can be very patient 8)
Mudhen if you want to do a 'dusty buns', Oz is the place. My ride took in a section of the Gibb River road in the Kimberly region of Australia. Its about 800k (500miles) of dirt. There are other stretches of desert road over here like the Tanamai Track which are over 1000km of dirt.
The dirt roads in Oz are generally open and fast, but often heavily corregated. You can feel the damping in your shock heating and letting go after about 30 minutes. The shock recovered when I got back on the bitumen, but that's not much help! I'd like to include the Tanamai or the Birdsville track next time, but I'll buy a new shock with a big remote reservoir first!
