Title: A Poser No More!!
Post by: HappyMan on December 15, 2007, 10:44:53 PM
Got up early this morning (-4 degrees) to go Tiger hunting.  I found the Tiger to be in better condition than I had expected and signed the deal.  2300 miles with all three factory bags and heated grips.  Said good bye to the Yamaha I was trading and put the Tigger on the trailer.

Too much ice on our roads here at home but I managed to get her out of my driveway for a brief spin (no pun intended).  She sure purrs nice.

I'm looking forward to meeting some of you on the road next year.  Let me know if any of you are going to the Moto GP in Indianapolis.  I haven't purchased tickets yet but should know if the trip is set some time in January.

Yes!  JUST SHOOT ME NOW!!!!!!  I intended to buy a bike around this time but I also intended to ride it home.  I can usually ride longer even though it gets cold snow has been slim.  Not this year!  Couldn't believe I had to trailer it and then park it in my garage........oh, and yes, the garage door up and down though I do love the smell of an internal combustion engine......cough, cough.  :P

Hey, it's summer time here. Just got home from a really nice days ride.

Night ride home from the Lakes was just warm and fantastic.

I don't want to think about you guys riding in the warm summer while we endure next winter.

Yuk, that snow stuff in your pics is just a distant memory over here at the moment but never mind, it will all be reversed again far too soon.

Enjoy your bike. Cheers John.

Blue was really pretty in pictures.  Black is sexy but hard to keep clean.  Not only is Silver faster but it's by far the best looking in person....and it looks good dirty!  Of course I haven't gotten my dirty yet....

To confess, my first Tiger was an orange 05.  I LOVED the color, but I traded it for my 05 RT.  As it turned out, I missed the Tiger so much that when I came across a low miles, silver 03, in great shape, I couldn't pass it up.

Suddenly, silver became the fastest color   :D

Do you plan on selling the RT? I've found that I ride both.  The Tiger is for buzzing around town and the RT for the road. I can't ride the Tiger for more than an hour at speeds over 60mph. It beats the crap out of me. I've tried all kinds of screens. The sport screen is on there now, but I may order the biggest "barn door" Cee Baily's makes and try it.

Enjoy the new ride!

Yes, the RT is sold.  I'm used to flying around on my DR without any wind protection so that doesn't bother me at all.  I needed a good bike for two up trips that could take me down the back roads and the RT got too beat up doing that.  Yes, I gave up a lot of great stuff but I also gained a lot of great but different things with the Tiger.  The RT was an awesome bike that never gave me a single problem.  I'm looking forward to a few years on the Tiger.  Who knows, I may never get rid of this one.  Tigger really speaks to me!!

Everyone is different, but the Tiger beats on me more than any bike I've ever had. I don't know if it's the wind coming around the small fairing or the wind hitting the tank and coming up my legs or both. Don't get me wrong, I love the bike, but the buffeting prevents me from taking any long trips on it. My head gets bounced around so much that I can't read road signs.

Conversely, my wife loves riding on the back and hates the buffeting see gets on the back of the RT.  Therefore, we have a problem  :D

Post by: HappyMan on December 27, 2007, 06:18:07 PM
My wife hated the buffeting from the RT on the back as well.

I am putting an MRA Vario screen on the bike as well as widening the mirrors.  The Vario get's very good reviews on getting rid of the buffeting, smooting out the airflow.  I don't mind getting hit with wind but you do need to smooth it out.  From what I've read I don't think I'll have a problem.  The mirrors cause a lot of problems with this bike so widening them helps as I've been told.  I will also be using tank panniers which will help to keep some of the elements off my legs and increase my storage capacity as I lost quite a bit going from the RT to the Tiger.

Unfortunately I can't tell you how all this has worked since I can't ride in the amount of snow I have right now.  However, I have been able to do the above things to my DR and it's worked great and all my research on these things for the Tiger says it will do a great job.

The RT has better wind protection than any bike out there so if you like what the RT does it's pretty hard to get away from it.  I don't mind the wind as long as it's smooth.

Post by: ThreePutt on December 27, 2007, 07:00:35 PM
I had the Vario and wide mirrors on my 05.  The combo did help, a little. I think the thing that helps the most is a tail wind. A strong head wind is pretty rough.

Tank panniers could help.  Keep us posted on how it works out.

A lot of it can depend on your height as well.  Fortunately, I'm not overly tall at 5'9".  (probably closer to 5'8").

As soon as I can get out I'll let you know but it looks like we've got a real winter this year.  It's probably going to be April......yuck!

I've found tank panniers to be helpful on long rides. I'm 6'4" and run a chopped stock screen and mirror wideners I had the boys at school turn for me. The Corbin made a difference too.

I learned about how helpful tank panniers can be from Greg Frazier's books.  He's a hoot of a read if you ever get the chance.  The latest book I'm reading from him is:
"Motorcycle sex, or, Freud would never understand the relationship between me and my motorcycle".

Which tank panniers did you go with?  I'm deciding between the Mt. Suns and the Stitch or Happy Trails.  I'm leaning toward the Mt. Suns for capacity.  Traveling two up camping I'd like to keep my weight forward and low.  I used to be able to adjust the shock on the Beemer for the weight that was on the tail rack but with the Tiger I plan to keep it forward.  The Mt. Suns give plenty of that capacity I'm looking for.  I'm just concerned they will be too big for the Tiger tank.

I didn't like the buffeting when I got my Girly, but this screen cured it.

One unexpected bonus with this screen was that it's exactly the right height to clear my visor when it's raining.  The air coming over the top is rolling and so going straight down, blowing the rain vertically down off the visor from about 15 mph upwards.  I use a silicone polish on the visor which helps of course....

I was hoping my Vario would have shown up by this weekend but it looks like it will be next week.  I was able to chip away most of the ice and make a path to the end of the driveway this evening after some 34 degree weather this afternoon.  I laid down some salt tonight and I expect I'll be able to get out for a ride tomorrow if the weather holds out for me.  I guess I'll get a chance to see how bad the stock screen is....at least I hope I do.  Cross your fingers for me and maybe I can post some actual ride pictures!! 8)

so did you happen to get out this weekend? i was THIS close to pulling mine out and having a little go around the neighborhood.. us in the upper midwest have been getting a strange (but nice) heatwave this weekend. it was in the high 40s today. definitely warm enough for a short get-out.

i think today was my only chance though, since we're getting rain for the next couple days, then its supposed to get cold again.

65˚F forecast for tomorrow, and I have mine shrewn in bits across the garage, awaiting a backordered chain and sprockets.  I had a crunchy rear wheel bearing, so I had to disassemble anyway.

 Nope.  I could finally get out of the driveway but the roads were dripping with wet salt and I had a window of about an hour which didn't give me much time to ride and then get back, clean the salt off the bike and then get in my "dress up" clothes for the party I had to be at all day and evening.  Just got home.  Bummer.  I was really excited about a chance out but decided it wasn't worth pushing it considering the circumstances.  I will continue to be patient.  My driveway is now free of ice so all I need now is some time and dry roads....or just time.

I always keep a spare bike or two around for just such occasions.  I used to hate it when I'd tear a bike down and then get stuck without being able to ride.  Sorry you couldn't get out.  I'm still living vicariously through you guys that can still get out and ride!!  (http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/ricky.gif)

I received an email back from Skidmarx today.  They ship them from California and he said they have them still for the 06 though they are not listed on the website.  Around $99 plus shipping.  However, he sent me photos of the 07 Tiger with them on.  I asked for a clarification on whether they truly had them for the 06 and I have not heard back.  It's a nice looking shield.

Bare in mind he did not get back to me on a clarification of the availability on the 06 and earlier but his original answer was yes.  His pictures did not match.  He did not give any part numbers in the following correspondence I received from him:

Hi yes we do a tall is $99 and a D/Bubble is $105 we have clear light smoke and dark smoke you can call us to order at 530-587-8521 we are in California.

Just an update to this, following reading this thread and one started by Bixer Bob I contacted Skidmarx for a screen for my 05. They supply taller screens for most Tigers.
I received first class service from Skidmarx, the screen (which had to be fabricated) arrived 5 days after order and seems to be a great improvement over the stock screen.
It cost £39.95 which is pretty good compared to Triumph's at £99.99!

Glad you like it,  as I said before,  I think the proportions are better than the original.  It also sounds like you guys in the US are being stretched a bit on price.  Try contacting the UK direct for a price plus postage:
