Title: oh no, not again!
Post by: abruzzi on February 25, 2008, 06:43:39 AM
I was out running some errands today when an oncoming truck moved into my lane faster than I had time to react.  We collided head on at 35 mph each.

I just got home, supposedly the only thing broken was the collar bone, but my nuts feel like I was kicked repeatedly--very hard.

I don't know how the tiger took the impact, I couldn't see it from where I fell.  Hopefully it did better than me.

Any way, Ill be absentee for a while on the board--but Stretch can do anything I can.

Geof

Aw, dude...

I hate to hear it, but I'm very, very glad you're up and able.  Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

Assuming you're on the mend, did the Tiger get deposited back at your place, or is it lonely and cold in some impound lot?

We'll try to not break the internet.

It doesn't look terribly bad.  I'm hoping the puddle under the bike is just gasoline overflow from the bike being on its side?

Get yourself healed up and then we'll see about getting the Tigger Cavalry rounded up to do some wrenchin'.

Pheh.  You'd be amazed at the idiocy of the general populace.  Man, the stories I can tell...

But maybe it's something as simple as a punctured radiator hose, and the wrecker driver isn't so dumb.   :doubt

Geof,
There goes the parade wave, very good to hear it was not worse.  That sucks heavily, I hope that you have better days, and that man and beast ride again soon.

Is that the numb nut changing his front tire?  It appears he is on the wrong side of the road.  I take offense when I see other drivers not able to hold their line; even when pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles are not threatened at that moment.

Never like to hear things like this.  I actually can't believe it wasn't worse getting hit head on like that.  You should consider yourself very lucky.  So, what was he doing in your lane?  I am gonna guess making a pass.  People are so damn impatient it irritates me to no end.  I drive for a living and get aggravated at the morons who think their shit is more important than everyone else's.  Hell, most of the time it is people who are in a hurry to get to work, somewhere they don't even WANT to be...and they are ready to DIE to get there.  Insanity.

Sorry, rant over...heal up quick as you can.

Post by: abruzzi on February 28, 2008, 12:02:24 AM
I was poking along in my lane and he swerved over an hit me head on.  He was dead center in my lane, the only reason the damage is on the drivers side of his truck is I tried to get as far out of his way as possible.

I can definitely say that Thunderbike saved my left leg.  (see attached photo)

I got the results of the MRI back today.  They suspected a hairline hip fracture, but that didn't happen.  I feel amazingly lucky to have survived a head on collision with only a fractured collar bone.

Close up, I'm suspecting the bike might be toast.  (Which means I might be in the market.)

Thanks for all the kind words.

Geof

Those thunderbike bars are the best you can buy for saving your bacon .
I am impressed and you Geoff were riding with an angel that day for sure .
Your right on the bike though insurance is gonna total it

Glad you came thru relatively whole and intact.

How much of a role did your gear(ie boots, jacket, gloves) play in saving your bacon?

Let's just say the helmet is toast--cracked and visor ripped off.

The collarbone fracture seems to be the result of hitting the groung with half of me on a sidewalk and half on the street and the curb jabbing my shoulder.

I think the real ass saver (other than the helmet) were the TB crashbars.  If they weren't there, my leg would have been pinned between the bike and the truck, and the rest of me would have impacted the truck at 50mph (25+25).  As it was the crash bars allowed me to essentially be thrown clear, so I impacted the ground at 25mph--much less damaging.

When I get set up with a new tiger, TBor Ma's are going on there.

If they total it, I'm thinking of going steamer.  Something like:

I love the look of steamers, and if I get a good enough deal, I may also pick up a KTM 640 available locally.

Damn, damn, damn.  You are one lucky pup.  Great to hear that you suffered relatively minor damage.  I too think that your old steed is likely toast.  Although I ride a Girly, I like your thoughts of a Steamer and 640.  I agree that they're both desirable bikes.

The KTM will vibrate like you don't remember, and may put your hands to sleep.  Silly laugh out loud fun though.  If they total your bike, the 955i motor would make an insane shifter cart

Hey Geoff,

I've been at sea while all this is going on (you can view but not post in the RAN).

So glad you came out of this o.k. The steamer is a good plan, great looking bikes. It'll be a shame if your bike is totaled but being able to walk away and feel the way you do now is priceless.

Just hope the lesson for Mr blind overtake sinks in

I used to own a Royal Enfield thumper.  It didn't so much accelerate as the thumping got faster.   :)

I found a barely used 2006 in Ohio that I may jump on.  I'm still mulling.  This would have to happen before the insurance makes a determination, but even if they repair instead of total, havng my Girly back and a 640 ADV isn't a bad thing.

Anyone in Ohio want to ride a KTM out to New Mexico?  I'll fly you back...Actually for a borderline new bike the price is pretty decent even after you factor in the MC shipping cost.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

I should add--My first major motorcycle accident was on a single (royal enfield)  my second was on a twin (Speedmaster)  now my third was on a triple.  Since I'll likely never own a four cylinder bike, I may be safe.  Or, it may hit my VW...

I just heard from the insurance...they are going to repair.  That kind of surprised me.  They told me to go ahead and order the panniers and crash bars and anything else that got toasted.

Good thing too.  Silver girlies are getting hard to find.

Hey Geof, strange question but did you WANT them to fix it or give you the pay?  I always wonder what I would hope for in the event one of my bikes is wrecked hard.

So, are you going to run aftermarket panniers then?  We didn't put you in a jam with the racks did I?

Quote from: "flux"Hey Geof, strange question but did you WANT them to fix it or give you the pay?  I always wonder what I would hope for in the event one of my bikes is wrecked hard.

I'm not sure.  I worry that it won't ever be the same bike...but I will push to get _everything_ fixed.  It is/was a great bike, and even if they totaled it, I would get another tiger of some sort.

To some degree, I think it would have been nice to move on to a different tiger (steamer) but I did have just about every farkle done to that bike to make if great for long distances.

No worries about the stock mounts, I won't be going back to the stock panniers.  They wil be replacing the damaged aluminum panniers, so I will have full touring capacity.

Yeah, I hear you on worrying if the bike would ever be the same.  I got hit in my Chevy 1500 with the suicide doors a few years ago and the truck has never been the same...the doors are almost impossible to keep closed all the way now.  And yeah, I got a jonesing for a Steamer, too.  At least all your farkles will be compatible with the bike still.

Check the frame and engine relly good where the crash bars were attached as it looks like the left crash bar took the brunt of the impact . Look for stress cracks in the engine castings and cracks around any welds that are on the frame ,

Also from past experiences with insurance (progressive bike) once they start replacing plastic because of scratched paint the bill is going to start approaching resale of an uncrashed bike ! I know progressive doesn't screw around once you hit a high number for repairing it , it will get totaled . even if there is only cosmetic damage !
a gas tank on bike bandit for my steamer is $900 , thats just for the bare tank with paint and decals no fittings .
Start adding in footpegs and handlebars and fairing pcs. etc etc and you can see how the price will quickly come up to the level where the insurance will just say fuck it and settle , which usually leaves the bike owner on the short end of the stick .
Just my .02 cents worth but I have seen it done many times .
