Title: Going for a little ride
Post by: Mustang on February 28, 2008, 10:41:12 PM
Ok guys in April me and my Steamer are going for a little ride .
Here's a pic of the route which is not set in stone but it is the general plan .

What I am looking for is if anyone along my route would like to put me up in their backyard for some tenting .
In other words I'm lookin for free tenting in your backyard for a night . just need a place to sleep .
Any help will be graciously accepted .
Ride report will follow after the trip
Plan on leaving the second week of april and returning back to NH maybe around the 1st of May or so .

If you wanted to dip a little farther south while in Texas I could probably put you up for a night. Pending clearance with the Mrs. I'm just north of Austin. I can give you a good route through the norhtern Hill Country. And send you east toward LA.

Looks like you're headed through Las Cruces, NM.  I live in Mesilla just outside LC.  You are more than welcome to camp here.  Also, if you give me a blow up of the NM portion of your route, I'll be happy to critique it, and give some suggestions.  If me and my bike are sorted by them, I'll even ride with you a ways.

also welcome to road suggestions ..the twistier the better  !
I am getting excited about the trip  It's kind of like a 4 corners US tour but I am leaning more toward places I used to live growing up being an air force brat !

keep the ideas and offers coming

:ImaPoser that's funny right there
the reason I ask is because NH has broken records with snowfall this year we have had over 100 inches already and another foot is forecast for tonite . It will be June before the snow is gone LOL !

hehe!

yup, WI smashed the existing record as well.. Supposed to be in the 40's this weekend, so hopefully a bunch of this crap melts. If the ice on the road in front of my house melts, i'll be takin the tigger for a little run this weekend!

seriously though, i hope its nice by April.. I got a serious case of can't-ride-itis.

This looks like the route thru New Mexico . But I am open to anything you have to offer as far as routes go . From what I can remember from years ago I think th ecloudcroft area was good ? yes/no

ohhh, you missed Emory Pass by a few miles.  Lemme fix your nm ride.  Zero interstate, a few mid sized highways, but not too many.

Let me know when you are in the area, It looks like I am a little south of your route (you are welcome to stay here if you get this far south) but I might swing up to your route and ride with you for a day or so.

yeah I thought after I posted it it should have been here any way !

Getting excited the steamer is all set ready to roll just have to put a new set of sneakers on her . I think I am going with the Maxxis Presa Detours and see how they do . when I get home I will probably go backwith the tourances unless the maxxis can prove otherwise .

Ok, here is a better route -- but still pretty direct.  I'll give a few other detours for some great senic rides.  It won't be too direct, but beautiful riding.

Here is a detour around Silver City I highly reccommend--It'll add an hour to ride (longer if you stop for pictures):

Click-> Silver City Detour (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=9788736588434178824,33.041000,-108.215720%3B7022178275783630390,32.798908,-107.932282&saddr=32.786697,-108.256874&daddr=NM-15+%4033.041000,+-108.215720+to:NM-35+%4032.798908,+-107.932282&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=12&via=1&sll=32.823923,-108.186493&sspn=0.275813,0.401344&ie=UTF8&ll=32.925996,-108.116798&spn=0.275496,0.401344&z=12)

There is also a ~15 mile dead end road that goes up to the clif dwellings at the top of the detour.  It's great if you have the time.

On the Silver City Gila side there are many semi-improved campsites if you intend to camp.  There are lodges as well.  I stayed at one recently for $40 for the night.

On the road to the CLiff Dwellings there are also the Gila Hot Springs which can be a relaxing way to rid your self of monkey butt.

If you want dirt roads, there is a GPX file on advrider.com in the GPS forum, under the rockies sub forum that has many off road trails in the Cloudcroft area.

And of course, you are welcome to camp in my back yard in Mesilla (near Las Cruces)

I just may take you up on the back yard camping it will depend on which way the front wheel wanders mainly but you never know good info to file away in the tank bag .

any body else got any good routes or sights to see in your backyard ?

Looks like JetdocX already piped up for Reno.  If you happen to be going through on a Wednesday, there is a pretty good bike night at PJ's on Wells Ave.

The link below will get you the address and some additional information; it is a little weak however in details.  Over the last 2 years, I have seen many kickstart British twins (including a Vincent), retired race bikes that have been plated, retired 2-stroke race bikes that have been plated, military bikes, sidehacks, scooters, nice restorations from the 60's - 70's - 80's, daily drivers from the 90's and 00's, panheads, shovelheads, dualsports, etc.  If your'e not into looking at bikes, just drop by for a near beer.

http://www.pjandco.net/home.html (http://www.pjandco.net/home.html)

We can get you through the Sierra without slabbing I-80.  The best road, Hwy 4, probably won't be open yet.  It has 1st gear switchbacks, and is closed in the winter.  The plus side of being closed is that there is no residual sand on the road, so when the snow melts the tar is relatively clean.
