I see it's being held in South America this year, due to the terror concerns that cancelled last year's rally (in Africa).

Looks like Vs. (formerly Outdoor Life Channel) is providing coverage again. No mention of Dakar 2009 on the Vs. website, though. Hmmm...

Interesting looking at the competitors, about:
1 Kawsaki
1 Suzuki
1 Husky
2 Jincheng
3 Betas
3 BMWs
3 Shercos
4 Gas-Gas
25 hondas
50 Yamahas
150 KTMs
This is definitely KTMs game.

please for give me, i hate to say this on a triumph forum, but, go yamaha. i had an xt 550 - the best bike i ever owned(i loved that bike(and yes, i would marry it)). i wish triumph would build a proper ds bike again(like the steamer) :D

They would have to build a single to compete in Dakar. Since sometime around 1995 motorcycles were limited to 1 cyl and I believe 650cc.

was that to keep the speeds down?
cause the Cagiva elephant I rode was FAAASSSTTT for a big ole dirt bike
had a Ducati V twin in it If I remember correctly ( just 1 test ride)
Oh, what a beautiful bike it was
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/fano1/cagiva09.jpg)
and that Steamer
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/fano1/311787263_FcmXr-L.jpg)
would love to have either..
I just remeber blasting down a dirt road at over 90mph and feeling like I was only doing about 50mph

Except when Peterhansel was riding Yamahas and except when BMW won for a couple of years. KTM win it because they have the mostest bestest bikes most of the time. Except when another manufacturer puts in the required cash.
DONT FORGET - THIS WEEKEND IS DAKAR. THE TV CHANEL VERSUS IS SHOWING HIGHLIGHTS ON SUNDAY AND EVERYDAY AFTER.
Be there or be square.
Some highlights here.

Bitchin'! Thanks for the link!
this is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
marc coma is riding great, but what a finish for cyril despres. finishing on a tireless rim - wtf  the guy's a steed. thanks fano for the the link. much better than the tv coverage.
bu-buy cyril, looks like coma may be king this year, maybe, just maybe street can catch him and take the finish. so far it's been a pretty cool race. 8)
Those guys are all legends, even Charlie Boorman when he entered and he whined a lot.
Was gutted when they didn't run this in '08
Just imagine.... Jo Street was offered a Water Carrier ride for KTM factory team, he turned it down in favour of a privateer ride.... there'll be red faces all round at the factory if he wins. Go Jonah!!!!
Jonah is the second overall after today. :rock-1
YEAHHHHHHHHH. JONAH STREET IS DA MAN. god i wish i was there. :wav
Jonah is the winner of todays stage. :P
http://www.sbs.com.au/dakar2009/ (http://www.sbs.com.au/dakar2009/)
man, jonah's got to fix that wrist, and get up to first. marc coma is a great rider though!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jonah retired yesterday as he couldn't hold the bike up with that wrist, shame he was doing good too
WOW, now thats a let down. but hey, thats racing. the guy did great though. Marc Coma is an excelent rider and is doing good, and Cyril is coming back. what impressed me was the yamaha wr450's. they are really doing well against the big KTM, and BMW backed machines. that tells me alot about the riders. man i wish i could ride 1/1,000,000th as good as those guy's, and gals. im torn between what is the greatest race for me - the "Isle of Man", or "Dakar". this new Dakar is really proving to be good.Damn Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey, here's something cool. Ivo Kastan, the guy who rode the tiger in dakar many years ago did this years race - it was his 9th race. this year he entered a 110cc honda :ImaPoser . he made it 4 stages befor it pissed out so much oil that he could'nt finish and he scratched. he got it running again and is following the race along on it because his wife is a reporter covering it. the guy's got some huevos. his bike looked pretty cool, like a pit bike on steroids. http://dirtyhabits.ie/smf/index.php?topic=174.0 (http://dirtyhabits.ie/smf/index.php?topic=174.0)
Damn. I want a wife who is a reporter covering the Dakar.
Geof
Coma won, and De villiers in the cars, Volkswagen 1,2 . Robbie Gordon 3rd in the Hummer
this was a really good race. i liked the course, and the fact that they were able to race with out some friggin terrorist trying to kill them(or threatening to kill them). and right on Marc Coma. and thanks again fano for posting that link. :D
I'll second that thanks to Fano for positing the link! Thanks Fano!!
No problem. Between SBS and ADV, it was really good coverage.
here's your chance to buy ivo's pit bike :D check out the photo's further down in the thread.

Not to drag out an old thread but this seemed the appropriate place to put this. This is some nice video of riding along with Jonah, albeit low quality still a great ride.
