Title: New Steamer Owner in TX
Post by: Ocelotl on December 21, 2008, 05:10:14 AM
Hey y'all.  :)  I thought it's time for me to introduce myself. I've been lurking for the last month and helping myself to all the great info on the site. Last month I picked up a 1998 Steamer from a really cool guy north of L.A. Flew out to pick it up and rode it back. I love it. Also took an eventful side trip to Big Bend, total of 2200 miles on the way back.

It has Yoshimura cans and was supposedly jetted up the wazoo and tested by some race team dudes at some Triumph dealer in Utah, I believe. Runs great, but I'm not very convinced about the removal of the aibox or those pod-type K&N's. I'll see what I do about remedying that.

Bike is currently waiting for me to install centerstand and TB engine guards, TKC80's, oil change and 10K maintenance, etc.

Anyway, glad to be here.

It'll never be this clean again, and that's OK:

How does it run with the pod filters?  I would give my left nut to get rid of the stupid OEM airbox setup. 8)

You have the Kehin carbs, too?  I really want your carbs all of a sudden.  Don't leave your bike out at night.

Welcome to the assylum!  Get in touch with Dr. Mordo.  He's a Texan, too.

It runs very well, and I actually like the setup. It pops a little bit on deceleration/engine braking. I have not ridden any other Tiger so I have no idea if there's more power out of the setup.

The carbs are what came with the bike, afaik.

What concerns me about this setup is the possibility of sucking in dust while on the trails and that those pod filters can fall off. I can pop them off with my hand. During a pre-ride inspection I was lucky to catch one about to come off the carb lip. I'll look into a way to put a tether on them or something. I'll be keeping them well-oiled for the time being and am trying to figure out what kind of Outerwears pre-filters fit these.

The stock filter is nothing more than an expensive version of your oiled foam.  Stick with what you have. Maybe figure out a way to retain them more securely.

I really want to know your jet sizes!

That was very brave to buy a used bike and drive it 2,200 miles sight unseen.  Glad you made it, a good start.  I hope the bike works out for you.  I don't drive the Steamer because it makes a lot of power and goes fast.  I don't know why I ride it, but I really like the thing.

The stock air cleaner system sucks if you have to work on the bike. The system you have should work ok, just keep it clean.  Hopefully there is a way to keep them attached to the carbs.  Maybe some kind of bracket to support it on the back side?

Yeah, if you ever tear these carbs apart, it would be very neighborly to share the jet sizes, float heights, and anything else like screw settings you can think of.

Many of us would like to run a setup like that instead of the giant airbox.

Sounds good guys, happy to oblige. It seems like the bowls are accessible, so I'll have a look-see next weekend when I service the bike. Might not get you exact float heights but jet sizes should be easy enough. I hope.

The guy I got it from had bought it from his brother-in-law (who had all the work done to the bike) and didn't know much more than what I'm telling you regarding the setup. I'll see what I can find out as I'm kind of curious myself.

Cascadetiger, the bracket idea has me thinking. Might look into that also.

Welcome.  Nice ride you have there.  I have a 98 in BRG.  Also rejetted so looking forward to your jet report too.

I'll bet they either shimmed the needles or being a bike shop they came up with some needles off another bike.  Hey all, should we start a pool on what jets he has?   :-)

I envy your ride.  My bike is the same as yours, except it's now under 18" of snow (in a RideInn shelter).  I hope you like it as much as I like mine!
Title: Posted a ride report in ADV Rider

Hey guys,

I've started a ride report about the trip to Califas (i.e. California) for my Tiger and thought you'd like to know about the Steamer porn there  Just be patient with my posts there (and here).

I haven't forgotten about the jet sizes, just that there's been too much stuff going on around here...

Wow, this last weekend I was up in your neck of the woods over at Eagles Canyon Raceway around Slidell for some racing with the CMRA. Sometime I just might look for suitable tires and take the Steamer to a track day, now that would be fun...

Meanwhile, my tiger sits in the garage. What I thought would happen finally did and I dropped one of the K&N filters somewhere on the road. Waiting for a replacement from them...

Why wait for a K&N when you can get three Uni Filters from your local dirty-bike shop right now?
