Just bought a '98 steamer and within a few hundred miles realised something was amiss. So I sent it to the Triumph dealership, who couldn't sort the problem, despite having 3 days to investigate....(draw your own conclusions on this) Having read through your posts on common complaints, I realised the coils where shot and some new nology ones were promptly purchased. Runs so much better now and was easy to fit 'em too. It really was a doddle. Can't tell you how pleased I was or how grateful I am for the advice given. Love the bike and have done over a thousand miles on it in the space of a month, which is a long way on a small island. I'm getting confident now so next step chain/sprocket renewal... then (gulp) the valves.
thats good news. maybe the dealers should read this forum
Valves aren't a big deal, you'll just want to take your time and document everything. In the 'Steamer Wisdom and Illustrated How-To' sticky, you'll find a How-To article for checking and adjusting the valves...

On Mustang's site, you'll also find a link to a Valve Clearance Worksheet, which is a PDF file that you can print for use in the shop...
