Title: WTB Tiger 955i engine
Post by: eatalotapeaches on September 30, 2009, 06:35:56 PM
I think my motor is toast.  Actually the dealer said it is.  I'm looking for a replacement 955i.  What have yall got?  Have you seen a salvage/ part out on Craigslist?  Keep an eye out please...

Thanks,
Daniel

Not for a little while.

What's wrong with your engine?

I took a 1500 mile camping trip to out west.  My driving light broke off while of roading in Moab, Utah.  It put a small hole in radiator.  My tools and luggage were at the hotel, I had no cell service, and was 14 miles up a mountain road where there were no other people.  It was getting dark and  starting to rain so I decided to press on.  I coasted and pushed the bike when possible, driving when necessary.  I overheated it and the dealer here says I'm best off finding a used motor.

If anybody knows a reputable shop that charges a reasonable rate, I'm game for anything that gets my baby rolling again.  Work sucks and the idea of riding my Tiger is about the only thing that gets me through some days.  (I love my wife, but  sometimes she doesn't wanna ride...)

I actually have a couple pieces from that bike.

Pinwall Cycle is good to deal with.

My tiger has recently taken a crap, I might be interested in buying your engine for parts. It could help offset the cost of you buying a new unit and I may be able to find good parts to built one engine out of the two.

I believe mine has lost something in the bottom end, maybe spun a rod bearing but my head and top end are still in good shape (which is likely what is damaged on yours from overheating).

I have been told by more than one dealership that a Sprint motor (certain years) are comparable and will swap.  It would potentially have different cams and the ECU will need to be programed as a "Sprint."  I have been told it is the same ECU.  One dealer said the thermostat and oil cooler lines might need adjusting.  I still haven't found anyone who has personally done the swap.  This leads me to be hesitant to buy a Sprint motor since I'm not a wiz at fab'ing and don't have much spare time or money right now.

A 955i Sprint makes about 38bhp more than the Tiger if it's the same as the Daytona, due to exhausts, cams and ECU map. The ECU is the same, just a different map (I had a Daytona ECU on my Tiger and it ran)  so you could fit it and get the map done at your local Triumph shop.  You'd have one fiesty Tiger in the end though..
