I was over on the ADV site and found this post from Rocdoc
update from Stretch's said riding partner Rocdoc... yesterday Stretch had a pickup truck assisted get off and is in the hospital here in our home town. He got a slightly collapsed lung, a cracked rib, three back and two neck vertebrae cracked. Doesn't look like any surgery will be needed, but he'll be a while recovering. Good wishes appreciated. Rocdoc
Hope Stretch has a full and speedy recovery

Not going to wish ya speedy recovery..... time is not the issue... FULL recovery is my wish and it will take time.
Hope you drop in soon. So you can feel all warm and fuzzy from the slew of well wishes that this thread is about to fill up with. :D
Get well man.... do the PT they give you.
I know how scary a collapsed lung can feel.
Please pass on my best wishes and tell him I'll raise a glass of Tiger at the weekend. Hope his fingers are OK and they have wifi in the hospital :new_popcornsmiley
Awww, hell! Sorry Stretch. Get well soon. Please keep us in the loop?

Hi, guys. Thanks for the positive thoughts. I was certainly blessed this past weekend, as I have five cracked vertebrae in my neck and back, but still have 100% function and sensation in my arms and legs. I was walking again Monday morning. It could have been so much worse. I just thank God for padding the impact.
I had been running some errands on the Tiger Friday afternoon (yeah, the 13th), and had finished up and was taking the long way back home on a country road when some dipshit in a Ford Ranger turned left in front of me. I don't remember much, but the investigating police officer said he could tell from the skid marks that I tried to avoid the collision (rear brake on and off to avoid locking), but there just wasn't enough room to pull it off.
In addition to the five cracked vertebrae, I also have a broken rib and a partially-collapsed lung. Oof. My Nolan N102 did its job protecting my face and skull, and I don't have a mark on me there. There is a 45-minute span in which I don't have the slightest recollection of what happened, but other than the concussion from the wreck, my head has checked out fine.
My beloved Tiger is totaled, and I'm sore and stiff, but happy as a clam to still be here.
Thanks for your support, everybody. I love you guys.

Glad to hear you're OK Stretch. I try to foresee those nasty left turns from a meeting car, but many times I forget. Good news is that you're still with us to remind us about those dangerous situations.
Do you think that anti-locking brakes would have saved your day?
Glad you are ok (ish) Stretch; pity about the old gal, you put a lot of work into her.
My very first off was the same sort of accident, 'cept over here it's turning right. I was only 16 at the time.... the cage driver was 8 months pregnant
So sorry to hear about your Tiger but glad you are o.k. and recovering. It was your Tiger that made me want one....If I were closer to you I'd let you ride mine until you replaced her....I guess you'll just have to move up north!
Really sorry that this happened and really glad it was not worse. Best wishes for a full recovery.
ack
Hell Man, I look away for two days and look what happens! Heal fast my friend. Next summer get over here for a bit of UK riding. I'll host you.
Thanks, fellas. I walked out into the garage a couple times this afternoon, quietly lamenting the empty space with the TKC knobby tracks all over it.
Quote from: "harre"Do you think that anti-locking brakes would have saved your day?
Not in my particular case, I don't think. There simply wasn't enough room to maneuver. The guy never saw me, even with me wearing a fluorescent yellow vest and both headlights on.
The accident is still being investigated by the police, but the officer did tell me that he knew excessive speed was not an issue.
Holy Chit, man. I am just catching wind of this!
Sorry to hear it, but glad you are here to tell us about it yourself. Left turning cagers... shit...
You know I am just around the corner if you need anything.
Heal up!
Cheers
Stretch...
So how is the pampering around the house?
This has got to good through New Years at least.
After that ... I think you're pressing your luck!
Heal Well . . . . Soon!

Make best use of the sympathy vote while you can, they soon forget and start giving you a job list
Don't worry EB will be scouring ebay for a suitable replacement as we speak, he's got a permanent desk at ebay anyway
Sounds like some good one on one time with your daughter Stretch. It's a tough way to get quality time with your kid but take it when you can get it!
I saw on ADV someone mentioning that if you find a Girly in his area to feel free to use him to check it out. Same goes here. If you need someone to check out a bike with in a hundred miles of Minneapolis please don't hesitate to ask. Be it a Tiger or anything else, just ask and I'll be there for you!
well.... if you want a rehab project. I can sell you a Tiger for 800 bucks and you can swap parts between yours and it and make a new running bike out of it. I was planning to keep it for parts but..... you know.... between tiger brothers...... It's all good.

That was me. I really would like to own 2-3 Girlies. One with TKC's and all the panniers, crash bars etc. One with street tires only, no panniers or xtra junk and one that I could just polish for the museum and keep stock, low or no miles! :D

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I'd love to keep one just to store away for 30 years from now....
Oh, sorry to hear this Stretch. I am glad you will be OK. Are all your farkles totaled too or can you change them to your new Tiger?
Ack! Late finding this thread!
Get healed up Stretch, glad you're among the walking talking living.
Hopefully you can get through your therapy and ensuing claim with his insurance quickly and as painless as possible.
Not the time but I know you have to be thinking of it now and then... what's replacing the old girl?
Sorry to hear about your accident, Stretch. Glad to hear it wasn't any worse. Heal up!
BTW... If you're in the market for a replacement steed, this 05 in your area was posted on ADV. http://advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11379747&postcount=18
Good to read you are up and about, and back on the road......
....even if it is the road to recovery.
Take the time to heal... (and read about all those things we'll need your input on.)
Holy crap.......glad to hear your ok. Bikes can be replaced, riders cant'.
Not to make light of any of this (I am truly glad your injuries are generally minor), but does this mean you are going to have to rebuild all your homemade projects on this bike? I'm thinking the Jesse's, the skid plate, and all the smaller stuff?
Geof
I haven't seen the bike. It's still in the impound lot, and the police won't release it until their investigation is complete.
Hey Stretch !! its good to know yer now the walkin wounded, it must be wierd havin so much space in yer garage where the beast should be !!

Just a word of warning though.... T.E.N.S plus mates plus beer equals hilarious, if painful, fun.

Stretch, sorry to hear about it. Sounds terrible. Let me know what we can do to help.
I feel we are brothers in yet another way, though: I was rear-ended by a dipshit in a Ford ranger at a red light on my Triumph Sprint. Maybe it was the same guy? I was testing the fit of an offroad torso rig that had protection down to the wrists, wearing Revvit leather with keprotec-shell gloves, an Arai Astral X helmet and impact pants so I was not even scratched. Totaled the Sprint! Bought it back, fixed it and I'm still riding it (44k, knock knock).
Can you tell us what you were wearing that might have saved your life? ATGATT but what's in the G for you?

Hey, dudes. I'm doing just fine. I'm up and about now, starting physical therapy next week.
I'm celebrating Thanksgiving like a
seriously thankful mofo.
I got the bike back a couple days ago. Forks are bent backward enough that the front wheel won't turn, and the fender and fairing are shattered. The tank's okay, and it still fires up and runs.
I don't trust the frame being straight, though. I'll wait and see what the insurance company wants to do with it. If they total it, it's theirs. If not, I'll most likely part it out.
Quote from: "Colonel Nikolai"Can you tell us what you were wearing that might have saved your life?
It wasn't anything I did, bro. God simply didn't want me dead or paralyzed. No amount or brand of gear is going to keep a neck and / or spine from breaking if it's hit right...
A couple more miles per hour or a few more pounds of pressure would have easily finished me off.
Praise God I'm still here.
Great to hear from you Stretch! Glad to hear from you again and have a great Thanksgiving! I'm truly thankful you are alright.
Quote from: "Stretch"I don't trust the frame being straight, though. I'll wait and see what the insurance company wants to do with it. If they total it, it's theirs. If not, I'll most likely part it out.
Actually if they total it they (insurance) will generaly take it and resell with salvage title .
And if they don't total it they will have it repaired , you generally don't have the option especially if it's financed .
What will usually determine if they total it is if the repair costs come close to or exceed book value .
Kelly blue book on an 05 tiger in good condition is 4200 trade in value and 6200 retail , not sure which one the insurance co. uses .
But my guess is if the damages to repair are around 5k you will be saying good bye to your silver tiger , and if they decide to repair you will have a tiger to sell that has been repaired .
OK. . way late joining this thread. Been offline for 2 wks. Stretch-glad youre ok. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving.
Im sure the bike will be totaled. The insurance company doesnt want the liability of a repaired bike on the road. If the forks are bent that bad, it's done. Lets face it a $6,000 bike payoff won't touch the cost of a front end deer collision with any new car. $6,000 is nothing to them. A potential liability lawsuit down the road is real $$$ Good low mileage Girlies are still out there......I would be looking, I'm sure you have been.
Happy THANKSgiving Stretch, and many more! :occasion14
Stretch.... while my guess is this was a tough Thanksgiving.... at the same time.... well.. your having THANKSgiving and that is a HUGE thing to be thankful for.
Peace Brother Tiger, and her is to many more Thanksgivings. :D
Stretch,
Yeah this Thanksgiving must be a real obvious one for you!
In April of 2006, my 1996 Sprint decided it wanted to have it out with a 9-point buck at 50 mph. The deer had just enough time to lower its antlers before the impact, too  . Totaled it: took out the lights, fairing and fairing cage, bent the forks back. The bike went down on the right clutch cover and slid for 40 feet on the pavement, but kept its integrity until I replaced it in 2008. I was able to use both discs and fork stanchions but everything else up front was replaced, along with the right exhaust can. The frame remains straight as an arrow.
Dunno if this helps, it's not exactly hitting a truck and not a Girly, but these things seem tough. I always thought the Girly frame was a tetch tougher than the steamer / Sprint frame. Here are some pix. The first one is the Sprint in summer 2008 (wish I had a center stand like that on my 96 tigger). The last one shows how far back the Sprint forks were bent back from the impact in 2006. Sprint still runs like at top with 44k on it.
Quote from: "Stretch"I'm doing just fine. I'm up and about now, starting physical therapy next week....
Oh it's good PT starts AFTER Thanksgiving. You see once you start PT (which can be painful) your "thanks" sorta starts to become "ohhh geez.. thanks a lot  ) :D
QuoteNo amount or brand of gear is going to keep a neck and / or spine from breaking if it's hit right....
While that's true.. the new airbag jackets should reduce the number of available options of "breaking if it's hit right". If it would have helped in this circumstance I don't know. Don't know what of your injuries came from impact after leaving the bike.
Anyway..... since your going to be buying new gear anyway.... an airbag jacket is something to consider.

You never said how the buck turned out.... venison steak?? sausages? I like venison sausages...
Stretch, what kind of protection did you wear? Maybe it was not all down do good luck after all? Did you have any back protection or clothes with shock protection?
Heal well.
The buck was killed instantly on impact. The rider was thrown over the right bar, the antlers went over the left. After rolling for 120 feet or so, he came to a stop, lurched to his feet and walked up the road to hit the killswitch, after which he sat down on the shoulder until the ambulance came. He was unhurt: no broken anything. Hurt to cough or laugh for a week, but that's all. He was wearing a shoei, took two big chunks out of it. His suit fell off him in pieces. ATGATT, eh?
He was getting ready to put the bike together when he decided to hang up motorcycling altogether. He said every time he sat on the seat all he could see was antlers.
I picked up the sprint from him for a few hundred, piecing back together from ebay mostly, so 25k later here I am.
I found this late; but thank God you're up and about! I hope your healing is complete and without too much pain.
We'll miss your activity here in the meantime. I quickly learned you're one of the sources of good info.
I'm a late comer to this thread as well. Hope therecovery is going well Stretch, we miss your contributions.
Get well soon and get another bike!
Cheers
Thanks for all the kind notes, dudes. I really appreciate it. I'm doing pretty well today. I had been sleeping in a recliner since I got home (I needed my head elevated, and it was easy to get in and out of), but last night I slept in my own bed... even spent a couple hours on my
side! It was glorious.
Quote from: "harre"Stretch, what kind of protection did you wear? Maybe it was not all down do good luck after all? Did you have any back protection or clothes with shock protection?

I was wearing a Nolan N102 helmet, Kilimanjaro 4 jacket with hi-viz yellow vest over it (that did a lot of friggin' good, didn't it?), FirstGear HT2 pants, FirstGear mesh gloves, and a pair of work boots. The jacket and pants have CE armor in the appropriate spots, including some thin spine protection in the back of the jacket.
Stretch...I've learned more about fixing and maintaining Girlies from your posts than from anywhere else. Your accident was unfortunate but as a rider for decades I'd say eventually inevitable. Keep the faith, heal, and ride again. Your intelligence, thoughtfulness, and genuine ability to solve vexing problems would be sorely missed if you were to move on from this venus. All the best. Rainycoastguy
I appreciate that, brother.
Inevitable... perhaps so. I'm just a few months shy of thirty years in the saddle with no major accidents at all. Until Nov. 13th.
But I am hanging up my helmet for good. I've worked so many wrecks where people were killed / maimed / crippled / paralyzed, and I was walking the hospital halls three days after this one with five fractured vertebrae. It was a wake-up call... like a warning from God himself...
"Son, I really saved your carcass this time. Others have been killed in lesser accidents. It's time to get off the bikes now."
"Yes, Sir! Thank you for the second chance. I'll do better this time."
I'll be a cager from here on out, but I'll be a cager that knows to look for bikes. 8)
If any of you cats see a burgundy-colored Jeep Wrangler with a tall skinny dude waving like a madman, it's just me recognizing a Tiger for what it is... the very best bike I've ever thrown a leg over. Wave back and pull over... I'll turn around and visit with you. :wave
Quote from: "Stretch".... It was a wake-up call... like a warning from God himself...
"Son, I really saved your carcass this time. Others have been killed in lesser accidents. It's time to get off the bikes now."...
hmmm.. or was he saying... "son... time to get off the crazy GA highways and stick to trails"?
Something to consider.
Your Yeep, a bike, a trailer.... a ramp.. and your set.
I have a cousin that fell out of bed due to "slick sheets" during some extra curricular activities. Landed on a night stand. He cracked a vertebrae and suffered a concussion.
Since then he's spawned two (known) kids, so at some point in time he hung up the "helmet" but he didn't give up the thrill of the ride
Joking aside, it's a little different when the night stand weighs over a ton and is hurled at you by a 3rd party at high speed. Add to that the knowledge that it very well could happen again.
I've yet to only suffer a couple small scares such as accidentally locking the front break up in an emergency stop. The first time almost made me put a sale sign on bike. I've been in wrecks in cages but even when injured that cage seems to create a much higher level of security when it comes to getting back behind the wheel.
30 years is a lot of good experiences in the saddle. I hope I can someday claim a good fraction of that.
Good on ya Stretch. Here's to ya in your future endeavors!
:occasion14
I hope I can do that some day, this forum has enriched my rather sad solitary life out here and I appreciate not just the technical expertise but a shoulder to cry on when needed, I think I'll be doing a lot more crying before the Steamer's rebuilt
Good to know the Boss gave you a chance to be out there looking out for the rest of us, so if you see any dozy cagers on phones run a blocking tackle for the rest of us 8)

Ever see the movie "Heaven Can Wait" with Warren Beatty? 1978 movie. If not rent it, it's pretty good as I recall. I had that, "oh wait, it's not your day, yet" experience when I flew and airplane upside down (and I didn't mean to). My wife was 5 months pregnant with my first child (no, she wasn't in the plane, she was at home) Couldn't even tell anybody about it for 2 years. No one knew but me and my maker. I did fly again, but it wasn't the same. I was going up and down like a freaking roller coaster ride! Couldn't fly a level altitude for 5 minutes. I would try it again, but it's too expensive now days.
I get where you are coming from and like I said, have questioned if/when/ever I would put the helmet away for good. I don't know yet if that will happen, but I can respect an accident like this being the catalyst for such a life changing event.
I too will sorely miss your Tiger knowledge, but hey, if you make it to Colorado in your Jeep, I can point you to some crazy hills that may lead you to putting the Jeep away for good too! Not that I'd be wishing for that, but there are some almighty crazy trails out here.
Take care and thanks for saving all of the others out there during your career!

Stretch,
Just found out about things, will keep you in our prayers for a speedy recovery.
thanks for everything,
Todd
Stretch, I'm late seing this thread. I wish you a speedy recovery. I know how good it can be to sleep in your own bed on your side and hopefully relatively undisturbed. :)
You will be missed as a keeper of all tiger wisdom. You have been an amazing resource and I've enjoyed watching the farkling of your beast. You'll also surprise me if you are not back someday. You seem to enjoy riding too much but who knows what the future will bring. You may be like a friend of mine who gave up riding after his second bad accident, 10 years later he found himself with a 20 year old bike in the garage and a pissed off wife. From there lets just say he recognized he'll never give riding up.
Thanks, guys.
Mad Jeepin' there, Atokad. The bruised and broken dude in GA is insanely jealous. I do have a military reunion in San Diego next fall, and will be driving the Jeep cross-country to get there. I do have a few spots that I have previously visited on bikes that I want to enjoy again... Monument Valley, Shiprock, Hovenweep, Mesa Verde, Canyon De Chelle...
It ought to be a pretty nice trip... top down when I can, enjoying the dirt roads off the beaten path.
The idea of keeping the trail bike has never left my mind. It's an '87 Honda XL250 (the last of the XL's). I bought in new in '87 and it still runs well. I have no plans of ever riding a bike again on a public road, but a 250 on a trail still appeals to me.
Get well soon mate

Not too shabby. Our pooch was diagnosed with sudden onset cancer which had us scrambling for the last couple of months but we're getting it back together.
Getting ready for a US visit right now. Virginia for a couple of weeks to see in-laws and friends. I'm also putting together a shopping list. Helmet, Mustang pegs, mesh pants, Rox risers and any bits that fell of your Tiger that you might not want...kidding man, i know how much work you put into that bike and how much you loved it. It truly blows monkey dick but at least you're alright...ish.
It was good to talk with you a couple months ago. I do apologize for being in a hurry at the time. Did you get the hotness straightened out?
Quote from: "Stretch"It was good to talk with you a couple months ago. I do apologize for being in a hurry at the time. Did you get the hotness straightened out?
Nice talkin to you man.
Still observing it. It might be that i should change the coolant plus the fact that the Tiger spends a lot more time in low gears because of its increased city duties. Needle goes about a quarter up when it starts feeling hotter.
I might get the chance to ride a K1200S when i get to the States. That thing should have me in Georgia in about 12 minutes or so, right?
Come on down! I'll meet up with you on four wheels, but I'd be happy to buy you lunch. :friday
