Well Chaps, picked up the Tiger.
Been out for a quick ride, all is good.
Just one thing, it has a different swing arm, shock and suspension linkage, meaning my new centre stand won`t fit, anyone know what its off?

The old sprints amd trophys had a setup similar to that, but there should be an end cap with a grease nipple this end screwed into the thread you can see, bit worrying as the end cap holds the pivot in place, and obviously stops all the grease escaping and crap getting in
look here

OH God Bless Ya, another blue steamer 8) . looks good kid.
believe that set up was also used on early Speed Triples.. as mentioned above, looks like there should be a screw in end cap/grease nipple like this?

bike looks good though - how noisy are the 'silencers' ??
nice to see a reasonably local Blue Steamer.. 8) :D
Neil
Thanks all.
I managed to get hold of a Haynes manual for the Tiger, so looks like its from a Trophy etc.
Looks like i`ll be looking out for an original swing arm and linkage, as i`ve already bought a new SW Motech centre stand, and it won`t fit with this set up.

Neil, seen your bike and noticed you were almost local to me, though mine doesn`t look as good as yours yet!
The Carbon Company end cans are pretty loud, sound nice bit i`ll be putting the originals back on, although they need some holes welding first.
here's one....

The guys a good seller and I believe that the steamer he took this from was also a blue one....

mine just photographs well :D
ebay seller Nick-W is a fair guy. Ive had lots of bits from him.
With regard to swapping back to original, bear in mind it wont be just the swing arm, you will need all the suspension items for the rear linkage, possibly the shock, the chain rub blocks may be needed, you may also have a different rear wheel as well. You want to be really sure you need to change all this for a centre stand. If it feels ok, you may want to live with it for a while, and price the job before you dive in.
Steamers, gotta love them.

Thanks mate, i`ve got all winter before i`ll use it, so plenty of time to work on it.
I`ve just bought a few bits from Nick, and awaiting his reply about the swing arm. :D
Yeah another Blue one, I think that was the one I enquired about off ebay, guy neede it gone that week so it didn't work for me. Glad you got it and at that price even if you have to do some remedial work you have a good base to work from.
Nik seems to be a good sort, I've got my hand up for some bits from him, you beat me to the bike please don't nick the bits out from under me

Yup, got it off Ebay, and only just down the road from me.
I`m only after the original swing arm set up, so don`t worry about anything else.
Cheers. I looked at Nik's swing arm but it's not much better than mine (http://tigertriple.com/forum/index.php/topic,6803) other than the bearings and seals might be in better condition. Just had an email from him and he has some shock drag links so he might be able to help you out there too, he's rebuilding one for me, stuffed bearings again

Before you go getting an OEM swing arm... call the guy who put yours on there. He may have had a damn good reason. For all we know the guy did it on purpose to improve something. That something may be an advantage that makes that one worth keeping on there.

The owner before the previous owner put it on, i`ll have to try and find out.
The shock on it now has more adjustments on it than the original, so thats one advantage.

He just Emailed me about the shock linkage, no secondhand ones but offered me a rebuilt one for £105 plus postage.
Will wait until i decide wether to go for the oem set up.
I think you guys with the blue ones are the craziest of the bunch of us...

Yup, ride it for a bit first, if you get dry weather  , otherwise you will start wondering why you bought it, do wonder where that setup came from though :?

:D
Something just hit me, wonder if this swing arm allows for lower adjustments in ride height?
Maybe it was swapped to better fit a former short rider? Or Tall for that matter?
Just a thought.
Quote from: "coachgeo"Something just hit me, wonder if this swing arm allows for lower adjustments in ride height?

At the moment, its too tall. i`m just under 6 feet tall, and i struggle to touch the floor on tip toe!
I`ve not had time to mess with the bike yet, but i`ve got an original swingarm on the way, and i just received the original swingarm linkage, just need the shock now, thought about a brand new Hagon.
When i get time to do anything on the bike i`ll let you know.
Well Chaps, its finally ready for the road. :D
Replaced the Trophy? swingarm and shock with original, made up a new chain rub bracket, had the shock rebuilt, fitted a new airbox and filter, done the high front fender mod, fitted a new centre stand, cleaned the paint off the rear rim, removed the awful blue carbon company end cans, cleaned and repainted the original end cans and replaced a few other little parts.
Still needs a lot of tidying but summers here and time to get a few miles on it to see if there are any other issues need sorting.

And just to let you know the height is the same with both swing arms.
Next time you have the wheels off, I found that Hammerite smooth silver is a good match for Triumph silver used on the brake disc centres. Refurbed my Trident discs that way...
Rear disc has had it, its rusty and quite badly scored, so i`ll be fitting a new one before MOT time.
Front discs are fairly new. :D
Well Chaps, found the next problem.
Bike was running far too rich, so off with the carbs as i thought they might have been re jetted for the cans that were on it.
Several of the float bowl screws were rounded off, so had to knock them round with a small chisel, all out safely.
First problem, one of the float bowl o rings was missing!
Second problem, looks like someone has had the carbs in a vice, couple of pieces missing where the air filter connects.
Carb number 3 is very gummed up, and the float assembly is a strange colour compared to 1 and 2.
The main jets were standard, although the needles were set on the top clip.
So i`m after a decent set of carbs, as number 3 is beyond repair.
What i thought was a cheap buy is turning into a money pit.
Still, i`m enjoying the challenge, and learning fast about the Tiger.

A question regarding the centre stand; It´s this right: http://alturl.com/e5f8 (http://alturl.com/e5f8) (short link to sw-motech´s centre stand)?
It´s listed to fit Tigers from 98-00, a bit strange since my 98 is the last in line before the new model in 99.
I haven´t owned a centre stand since the original stand hit a bump in a sharp turn and made bike, driver and passenger go down hard back when the bike was new. But I´ve missed it every time I had a puncture or had to do emeregency repair along the road, which have been a few times.
If it fits my 98, can you tell me approx. how heavy it is and if it sticks out a lot on each side.
Dag
Got mine from here http://www.triumph-online.co.uk/ (http://www.triumph-online.co.uk/)
Probably weighs about 5kgs.
Doesn`t stick out much at all.

If it is in fact the one for the link you posted it is correct
now for the rest of the story .......
if you didn't like the stock one that was on your triumph you are not going to like the SW Motech stand ............they are one and the same
Guess who made the original steamer stand

Bugger. I have a single leg jack stand or whatever it´s called, which has been with me for years. Guess I´ll keep it even though it´s far from ideal.
Good news for a change!
Got the carbs cleaned and set up back to standard, and new stainless cap bolts have replaced all the chewed up screws.
Back on the bike and fired up first time, seems to run fine at idle and when revved.
Just have to have a run out on the road and see how it goes.
The needles have some wear, but that can wait until next winter when i`ll do a proper and full refurb.
Just have to sort that leaky tap next................
Even better news, out on my first ride today, i`m well impressed.
Seems to run and ride fine, even the suspension which felt too soft in the garage feels quite good.
Speed surprised me for a big and heavy bike, its got a lot of pull.
And its quite agile through the twisties, i think this ones a keeper!

yep, spot on there... and its always more satisifying riding something quickly that on paper looks like it shouldnt be capable of it... :D
Warmest day of the year so far made it even better. :D
Just need to buy some new kit, my two piece leathers are a bit too tight.
Reckon they must have shrunk?
yep it was nice yesterday - had a bimble around the Wolds, ended up sitting in the sun eating ice cream - only ruined by having to do a nightshift...! have to get Bixxer Bob out for that coffee at Webbs sometime..
Been out for a few more miles today, then had my orders to carry on with some work i`m doing in the house.
I`ve ordered a new Pingel fuel tap, same price as original tap, but at least its rebuildable.
On a good note, i`ve sent my spare seat away to have it lowered and recovered, as although i`m just under 6 feet tall, i can only reach the floor on tippy toes, makes it a job to move the bike around.
I`ll put some pics up and let you know how it goes.
stop tellin me about how good your rides out are. my tigerific is still in pieces :P and me 7/12 gixxer has jus broke its rear caliper bracket :( gutted or what. 3 bikes n cant ride any of em

I am chomping at the bit I want to ride so bad I almost am about to pull the trigger on Craig's list for a 1981 KTM 420 MX for $450.00 just to ride something.
We are having one heck of a time getting the timing chain to stay tight on my tiger after we installed the cams back did everything in the book its tense then after torque the cam caps it went slack!!
:icon_scratch :icon_scratch
are you making sure you have all the slack pulled out of the chain on the front side before it goes over the exhaust cam sprocket ?
And are you making sure the tensioner is pressed in before you put the spring and cap on ?
Now you know why some folks like the shim tool ..........so you don't create more problems for yourself !

All is well Mustang, I bought some 240 shims hope this will work still zero clearance on two valves so my local guy gave me some 235's just incase the 240's don't make clearance..
Oh yes I won't touch the chain tensioner until I put the spring cap in.
I think I can do this with my eyes closed now..
Another thing the carb filter was a little under halfway full of trash bought an in line to replace it..
Thanks for your help.
Quick update, Just got my spare seat back after having it re-covered and lowered by around an inch.
Impressed by the quality and workmanship.
I can now reach the floor more comfortably.

Cost was £65 plus i paid shipping both ways, so worked out around £90 altogether.
Well worth the money in my opinion. :D

I did wonder why you asked :D
ALthough i`ll be over in the USA end of June, volcano ash permitting.
Its getting there. :)
Swapped wheels etc with Crustycrutch, and heres where i`m up to.
Small problem with the front calipers, sorting them out this week, and i finally got round to stripping and cleaning the rear caliper, and putting new pads in.
I also rebuilt the forks that i used on the bike, Steamer stanchions into Trophy lowers, which i had powdercoated.
Pretty straightforward, i used the Steamer spring, and all the other innards from the Trophy.
I used the Steamer fork oil measurement, new bushes and damper rod seals, new fork oil seals and dust seals.
Haven`t had a chance to ride it yet, due to no brakes.
The Daytona forks are a bit shorter than the ones i rebuilt, so using them for now, will try the Daytona forks sometime in the future.
A pic of the forks to compare the size.

out of interest did you try the tiger 'guard on the there?
Quote from: "NeilD"out of interest did you try the tiger 'guard on the there?
No, don`t think it will fit as the forks are set apart wider than the Tiger.
which front calipers are you using? did the forks come with the daytone 4-pot calipers? if so when you get a chance coudl you measure the distance between mounting holes.. (just wondering if they'll fit steamer lowers)

The forks i got in the swap are fully adjustable Daytona jobbies.
The calipers are six pot Alcons with the Triumph logo on them.
Had to get another set due to the threads being stripped on them, ended up with a pair of Nissin 4 pots to get me by, mounting holes are 90mm apart.
Neil, heres the calipers.
Both are 90mm mounting hole centres

cheers.. you seem to be able to pick them up quite cheaply and was wondering if they would fit on the Tiger lowers... although thinkign about ti the disc onthe tiger is smaller.. hmmm
The front discs on mine are 310mm.
I think the oem`s are 276mm?
Just out of interest, were the fork lengths the same to the spindle on the original tiger forks and the new trophy forks?. Will you be inverting the rear spindle?. I have a set of six pot Tokico's that will be going on. Did you retain the 14mm master cylinder?
Rob
Rob, can`t find my list of original measurements, on mine now, from the top of the forks (level with top yoke) to the spindle centre is approx 923mm.
Leaving the rear for now as its looks ok, but won`t know until i`ve ridden it as still awaiting brake pads and speedo cable.
Still using the original master cylinder, but i`ve read elsewhere about upgrading to a 5/8th master.
Will post up once i`ve ridden it.
Just a correction on my previous post.
The Tiger speedo cable is shorter than the Daytona.
Just found out after my new Tiger cable arrived and is too short.
A little more info on the speedo cable.
Been on the phone with Sandy at Triumphant who tells me that no oem speedo cable will fit with the front end conversion, you need to get one made up.
He gave me the contact details who do this, Venhill engineering, the company who make the brake/clutch lines.
Have just spoken to them, they need my original cable as a pattern, then they can make one up to suit my needs.
Its going to cost around £40.
More expense!
If i had no bad luck, i`d have no luck at all. :?
New front pads arrived this morning, new stainless pad retaining pins, all fitted, brakes bled, all ready for a test ride to try the front forks out.
Moved bike off the centre stand, front felt a little heavy to turn.
First thoughts i`d tightened the steering head bearings too much.
Nope, they`re fine.
Looked at front tyre, its flat.
On closer inspection, i found a shard of metal in the tyre, its as flat as a witches tit.
More expense, going to order a pair of tyres in the morning.
I sent my speedo cable off this morning to be lengthened by 10 inches, bet that gets lost in the post!
I`m off to my bed. :(
That would drive you to :new_all_coholic
No time to drink Sin, my bad luck continued...................
A couple of weeks ago, we bought my wife an 03 Fazer 600.
Had a good look round it, test drove it, all fine.
Got it home, then we had a couple of weeks of rain, so left it in the garage, started it every couple of days, all fine.
Then we had a nice, warm, dry day, so i start it up, get it out of the garage onto the road, switched it off while my wife puts on her bike gear.
I talk it through with her, she gets on, tries to start it, won`t start!
So i have a go, won`t start.
I eventually got it going by bump starting it, she then went for a short ride, not too far away from home just in case.
Got back, turned it off, into the garage, won`t start.
Tried bump starting it, nothing.
So, out with the multimeter, all checked out ok, only no spark.
Only thing it could be was the alarm/immobiliser, so after messing around with that, i decided enough was enough and ripped it out.
I`ve spent the last two afternoons sorting out the wiring, re-soldering and heat shrinking it all.
Everythings fine now, starts, everything works, although i did go through a few fuses connecting wires up wrongly, as all the alarm wires are the same colour.
One good thing to come out of it, the Fazer came with a Givi Wingrack fitted, thats now off and waiting to be fitted to the Tiger at some stage. :D
And did i mention my car.......................

It was our 19th anniversary last week, i just bought her some flowers, can`t believe they haven`t died yet!
The saga continues.
Tyre arrived Friday afternoon, wrong size.
The tyre i ordered is now no longer available, so they are sending me a better tyre at no extra cost.
Won`t be here until Tuesday.
New speedo cable also arrived.
At least i got my truck back from the workshop.
Well, my Truck has been sorted and running ok now. :D
The correct size tyre arrived yesterday, tyre fitter should be here later this afternoon.
Wonder what can go wrong between then and now.
Although the Sky + box went tits up over the weekend, new one arrived yesterday and all working well so far...............
Tyre fitted, nothing wrong so far...............
Getting up early today to fit the wheel and hopefully get a quick ride before work.
Bet it pours with rain.
Well, Friday poured with rain.
Anyway, finally got out on the bike over the weekend and wow!
The Tiger rides and handles so much better with the 3 spoke wheels.
Its a lot stiffer up front, probably too stiff but i`ll have a play with the top spacers in the forks, maybe shorten them a bit to see what difference that makes, although i did use 15 wt oil, maybe change back to 10 wt after i`ve ridden it a bit.
I "over guestimated" the speedo cable length, needs to be a couple of inches shorter, but it works ok for now.
Well happy for the moment. :D

Almost forgot, had a delivery today.
Been looking to fit a set of white dial clocks.
With the Trophy front end set up, they should work ok, although the rev counter reads a little higher.

Like being on rails isn't it ? Me like
The Triumph 3 spoke rims will bend like a wet noodle or soft butter on potholes and mild off road stuff .........been there already with mine :(

So much better than the old spoked wheels.
Won`t be taking this one off road, and i`ll try to avoid the potholes, but the UK roads are full of them.
Couple more things done.
Fitted the new clocks, straight fit, no problems, just plugs straight in to the Tiger loom, looks a lot better in my opinion.
Drilled and re-tapped new threads on the Alcon calipers, but need to drill out the mounting holes on the fork lowers as the new stainless bolts are bigger due to having to go up one size in the caliper threads.
Pics to follow later. :)
Heres the clocks fitted, clock looks out of place but i`m looking for a white dial face volt meter to replace that. :)

looking good - been looking at the white faced clocks and couldnt decide if I liked 'em or not, but agree they do look good.. does you clock work? if you're going to get rid then I'd be interested as mine has some missing lines so not always sure how much past the hour it is!

Clock works fine, as soon as i get a volt meter its yours.
PM me your address and i`ll send it unless your down this way the feel free to call in and collect it. :)
Sorted the Alcons.
Just need to soften the front end up now.
Got some old plastic water pipe that will do the job, so hoping for dry weather tomorrow to get out and try different length top spacing. :)

No worries, still trying to find a volmeter to match the clocks, white face with orange needle at a decent price.
And you were right, rained again.
Been a while since i added to this, so here goes.
MOT is due today at midday, been over the bike, shouldn`t see no reason for a fail.
I`ve swapped the 3 spoke wheels for my newly powder coated 6 spoke Trident wheels with new tyres, the 3 spokes were leaking air around the rims, tyre fitter said the insides were a little rough, they need shot blasting and repainting, so i`ll save those for the project bike.
Bought another front mudguard, the old one was damaged around one of the mounts, it will be painted as soon as possible.
I sold the Alcon 6 pot calipers as i got an offer i couldn`t refuse from a Daytona Super 111 owner who`s rebuilding it and wanted it original.
Also sold my cut down seat and re used the original blue one.
JUst replaced the battery as old one wasn`t holding a charge. so hopefully thats it for the summer!
fingers crossed for the mot mate. hope the suns out too for when it passes and ya can take it for a tear around
Cheers mate, needs tax as well, post office shuts at 1-00pm so a quick dash from MOT centre to post office is on the cards if it passes ok
Well it passed!
Couple of advisories, brake pedal pivot pin worn, and rear brake pulsing, suspect the disc is warped.
I have a new pin and disc on the way.
Missed the post office but applied for tax online, so should be on the road mid next week :D
Took the long way home, rides and runs pretty good, just got to balance the carbs and its sorted.
After fitting the Trident 6 spoke wheels, the rear is a little higher than ever, reason is the rear is an 18 inch wheel compared to the 17 inch 3 spokes.
I decided to spin the eccentric adjusters 180 degrees to lower it, and can now touch the floor comfortably.
Just needs a longer bolt and a spacer for the rear of the chainguard as this needs raising around an inch.
Heres how its looking at the moment, next job is to spray the front mudguard :D

nice one that it passed :D glad to hear you got lost on the way home too  always makes things more adventurous  now stop readin ya post and go get that mudguard painted so ya can go enjoy it when ya tax gets in 8)
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the inverted rear spindle...........I read in one of mustang's posts that he fitted a Touratech 955i tiger rear chainguard....looks good. The trident wheels actually look very good..............Have you told your insurance company about the changes, and what did they say?.............Hopefully I'll get mine finished when I get back from my holiday.........can't wait!!
Hey Rob, good time on hols?
I prefer the look of the 6 spokes to the 3 spokes, bugger to clean though!
Haven`t ridden it yet with the rear lowered, been pissing with rain all day plus i`m waiting for the tax disc to arrive.
Insurance company told about the wheels, no difference to price for it.
I`m making a temporary inch high spacer for the rear chainguard bolt, but will look into the Touratech mudguard, but i think Mustang fitted that to his bike, not his wifes lowered one?
The front end has improved since i shortened the top spacers, but i want to ride a few more miles before i decide if it`s too hard, did around 30 miles on it back from MOT, felt ok.
Need to sort the mirrors too, can`t see much behind, just my arms/elbows.
And now the rear is lowered, its a lot harder getting it up on the centrestand.
it works on a lowered tigger too !
the front mount shares the bolt with the chain strip rather than the seperate bolt in the swingarm for a steamer plastic chain guard

i had the same prob as you. these made a world of differnce and i can actually see whats behind me now. cant remember where i got mine from but it wernt hong kong so have a hunt and you should find em ok :D
Cheers Chaps.
Another couple of jobs to add to the list................
I finally got to get out and ride this afternoon, lowering the rear has somehow stopped the bike wallowing, front end feels fine.
Think thats it for this year, just going to be putting a few more miles on her over the summer.
Still got the other project Steamer to work on, i`ll keep ya posted
Been a while since i posted in this one, been out for a last ride today before i put it up for sale, still runs and rides good, couple of little jobs to do, got to replace the rear light and replace the front mudguard.
Will be sorry to see this one go
 just how much is this paint job you want ?
Quote from: "rybes" just how much is this paint job you want ?

The bits i`m selling will be enough for the paint job mate, selling this one as no need for two bikes plus i got other things to do 8)
Quote from: "rf9rider"selling this one as no need for two bikes
i hope Camilla dont see that. i had to argue with her why i needed 3 bikes and want another 4

I used to have around 5 bikes a couple of years ago, wife complained i never spent anytime indoors, so i`ve had to downsize a little.
Just the one Steamer will be enought to keep me busy, aleays got an idea or two to keep me busy. :)
I found a way around that problem . . . . . Live on a different continent 8)
Last job done on this one, before it goes up for sale
I finally got round to finishing the front mudguard, couldn`t find a decent match for the caspian blue, so did it in black.
Rubbed down and cut out a vent, something different
A few coats of primer
