Ah, one and the same, just ye olde euphamism. I was about to give you big  :notworthy for keeping two women and two bikes going.

No intention of getting you in the  :Topes apologies.

Thanks for checking that for me, reason I asked is I don't like the looks of the extended rear fender and debating whether to go with a hugger or go with a BMVV type dog pi$$ gaurd type thingy.

Just some info for you, This is my '96 with 150 rimmed wheel from a later S/S spoked wheel. Fits fine, no mods required.
Secondly, the Hugger is a genuine Triumph part used on other models. It fits on the chain side ok, but needs a small mod on the brake side. In my case a bolt hole, in Reibers, tie raps. Yo need to remove the mount on this side, because the model it fits has an under swingarm brake and torque arm.
Title:
Post by: Sin_Tiger on March 08, 2010, 07:34:56 AM
Hmmm, which models do you think I should be looking for if I want to pick up a 2nd hand rim & hugger?
Title:
Post by: rybes on March 08, 2010, 11:46:51 AM
the ones i got sin are off a 2000 fi model. if ya want a standard rim tho, i got a good rear with a tyre on it and matchin front tyre thatll be up f grabs soon ;) altho my guess is ya gunna be wantin the wider rim :D

Not that I spend all day on ebay, but this is the type of Hugger you probably want. This is in gloss black, but may have been painted.

Rybes, yup I should have said that I'd be after a 4.25 rim, might be able to pick up a DID or Excel locally rather than try to bring from the UK. Drop me a PM if you are passing up your old wheels, Ta.

MIMbox, well spotted, got my eye on that, Ta.

So the whole rim, hub and Rotor came off a 2000 Tiger?
Is the Caliper from the 2000 as well any Mods to do to fit this all together?
How well does it ride?

Like to do this to my 98!!

Anodising.... this is worth a read:

http://astro.neutral.org/anodise5.shtml (http://astro.neutral.org/anodise5.shtml)

I tried it using battery acid (new).  It works, but you have to make sure everything is spotlessly clean otherwise any dirt spots tend to cause burns on the surface.
Title:
Post by: BruKen on March 24, 2010, 06:21:46 PM
That seems straight forward enough. Thanks Bob I will have to give it a experimental go and see the results.
Title:
Post by: rybes on March 24, 2010, 06:31:14 PM
hmmm would seem i need to brush up on me terinology too. its the bolts that hold the fairins on that im gettin done. as there bout 2 quid each n theres loads. thing is there steel so ill have t look for an alternative. still wort a go with some other bits i got to do.

well tday has seen a small flurry of spanners and im left with a part dismantled tiger and 2 boxes of bits. hopefully come sunday it should all be in pieces ready to be sent of for what ever needs doin on em.
ill post up some pics tmora. never got time to take any tday. rain stopped play :(

Funny how things come together sometimes.  When I tried this it was very difficult to prevent bubbles building up and causing pits in the aluminium. Today I got my hands on a cushion meant for folks with bad necks and backs that was being thrown away.  It has a heat element built into it, but better still a vibration box.

Vibration box taped to the side of the anodising bath should do the trick.

Standing by for all sorts of cheap shots about vibrations....
Title:
Post by: BruKen on March 25, 2010, 12:08:43 AM
What material is the bath made from or will any old plastic basin do? I take it a metal bath unit is a no go.
Title:
Post by: Mustang on March 25, 2010, 12:44:49 AM
these work good for a home setup , you need a few of them
1 for the acid 1 for the water bath etc

Post by: BruKen on March 25, 2010, 01:23:59 AM
Hi Mustang. I'm on my mobile here so can't see the pic that clearly. That looks like a plastic cooler box. If it is how do you keep the reaction cool as cautioned? I must say guys. I never though home annodising was possible. I am seriously impressed and enthusiastic at giving it a go.
Title:
Post by: Mustang on March 25, 2010, 08:23:34 AM
I have sen home setups where the cooler (coleman cooler like picture ) was vented with a blower motor to exhaust the fumes and air to outside the shop . there really wasn't any cooling so to speak and as long as the anodizing was only done in small batches heat was not a real problem . Big stuff like fork tubes or the like would probably require much more serious equipment than a home tinkerer could afford . But little parts were able to be done quite easily with no problem with heat . the acid bath was monitored with a thermometer , doing small lots and not production type use it worked fine .
there are several websites that go into a good bit of ddetail for home anodizing .

here's a really good article for home anodizing
http://homepages.udayton.edu/~jacobsnj/anodize.htm

coffees drunk mate ;) today ive been busy. ive degreased the engine, cleaned the carbs and seperated the exhaust for paintin. anyone know a good heat proof paint ? also, am i right in thinkin that my tigers exhaust is stainless ?it aint magnetic only the rear cans and pipe work are. it seems jus the manifold and balance/link pipe is stainless ? im sure ill be put right if i aint.
so heres the pics of todays spanner twirlin :D

how gutted was i when i realised me cans were rotton. holes in one of em :( how more gutted was i when i never bid for a brand new stainless exhaust that was on ebay yesterday :(

Hope you remember where all those parts go.

As for those stainless cans on Ebay, they usually list a set every week.

And i`ve just resprayed my old cans, i used high temp babecue paint from Homebase.
Title:
Post by: BruKen on April 02, 2010, 01:16:21 PM
You are far more organised than me :) I can never remember which bolt goes where, so as I disassemble the bike I put all the bolts back where they came from sans the part removed. Pity about those zorsts :(

I just cleaned the inside of the lens and the reflector on one of mine with IPA type stuff and a microfibre cloth, the muck that came out was amazing.

I haven't done the other reflector yet, I want to get the bike back on the road then do a comparison just to see how much difference it made, then do some upgrade work.

Good luck (it's fairly straightforward though)

I put a Hagon on the back of my 'Bird and Hyperpro on the front.  I found the experience of both ends moving in unison instread of pitching back and forth and trying to throw me off quite novel.  I've had the bike since 3,200 miles to the current 58,000 and it never handled that well even when nearly new.

right, ive had a week off buildin this cos i been n spent a week wiv me missus  got back to a nice pile of bits n pieces for the rebuild. so i been busy this last week. got the forks fitted and wheels in. wheels still need discs puttin on. got the calipers all cleaned n rebuilt, dash board rebuilt n mounted. the pile of powder coated bits keeps gettin smaller. all ive got left over is footpegs. gettin some machined bits for those tmora n theyll go on  this week i can see me sprayin a pile of bits n cleanin up a few las bits to get it all on this week. then its just a few lil odds n sods. like paint n coils

Coming on well mate.

Hurry up and get it started, i want to know what those Venom cans sound like.

MIght get a set for mine if they ain`t TOO loud.  8)
Title:
Post by: GavD on August 07, 2010, 05:22:04 PM
I've put a set of those Venoms on (with the little baffle fitted) and they give it a nice rasp without being too loud. Your will obviously be a bit louder than mine with no baffle.

Mine runs a bit fluffy up to 4000rpm, but she's been laid up for 3 years so it might be a bit of crud in the pilot circuit even though I've cleaned them out 4 times.

Be interested to hear how yours runs and if you end up rejetting at all.
Mines a 98 running on standard Keihins.

they are ground straps for the high tension plug wires .you can hook them to the frame , have em on tigger 2 don't know as if they really do anything but tigger 2 does run pretty damn good and smooth for a bike that's pushin 70 k miles

Truing is not as difficult as one might think. I did it on mine with the wheel mounted on the bike. Simply fixed a steel wire to the forks as a measure of vertical and horizontal alignment, and then spent two-three hours making very small adjustments.

There are some videos and recipes on the net. I´ve lost mine, but google should help.

Fantastic job by the way.

My carburetors on the 98 are acting up again just set the valves, air filter did a quick clean of the carburetors 5K ago, it starts right up but choke does not work until it gets a little warm and idle won't stay at 15 grand when cold..

Keep up the good work..

well the bike was sposed to be ready for a run to somerset to another forum i frequents anual meet. so of i went into the garage to work like mad to get it ready for mot in the mornin. this of course means if still got to get it runnin. it aint ran for 2 years and the reason it was laid up was cos it didnt run. so, fingers crossed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY_OcqboxHg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY_OcqboxHg)

as ya can tell it aint soundin well. turns out it was the timin chain adjuster had worn its teeth off, gutted or what.

after a few mins of swearin after that vid and a lil bit of a tantrum, i grew up n looked at the problem. i decided to take the bolt out of the middle of the tmin chain adjuster, remove the bit from the other side n drill n tap it to take a m8 bolt. once id done this was a simple case of runnin a nut down the bolt then a fibre washer and finally the adjusternut. tightened the nut up and slowly tightend up the bolt in the adjuster to take up the slack of the chain. this is what happened

please dont watch this at work or while ya kids are about. if ya do mute it. i got quite excited ya see n ermmm me language aint the best ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwcT25bEZgc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwcT25bEZgc)

i couldnt beleive it. sat dead for 2 years n started first push of the button, once i fixed the timin chain adjuster.

that was also with the removable baffles, may i say ive removed em now and it sounds much better

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A61xvptcQJ8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A61xvptcQJ8)

so there you have it, after all this time its finally done. :D

Rybes,

I've got a '98 and I've fitted the Venom cans you've got. Mines a bit fluffy about 2-4k revs and I'm not sure if I've got all the crap outa the carbs where she was sat for 3 years or if I need some re-jetting. Is yours running ok in this part of the rev range? If so are you running standard jetting? (I realise we have a different set of carbs, but it might point me in the right direction).

Also was watching yr vids on youtube and noticed you got a weimaraner. me too - 3yr old bitch, nutty as anything. Great dogs tho, wouldn't be without her.

Gav
Title:
Post by: rybes on October 02, 2010, 09:52:17 PM
alright Gav

im thinkin of gettin mine rejetted cos its got a hesitant pull away unless ya got a fair few revs n a bit of clutch slip t pull away smooth or its a bit jumpy. then it feels as if it has a smaal but not really noticeable flat spot mid range somewhere. couldnt tell ya the revs it happens at as its such a small thing ive not bothered with it. nex time im out ill have a look a bit more closely n let ya know

Cheers Rybes,

I was hoping to get mine on the road late summer, but what with getting married and the Mrs starting university it just ain't happened, so I've got the winter to get her completely sorted and finish off my 6 spoke wheel conversion. Although looking at your wheels I'm kinda tempted to do a rebuild on the spoke ones too.

Just gotta find some ££££££££'s

Gav

Rybes,

I've had some success in the jetting department. I've changed the pilot jets from 38's to 40's and it's totally cleared up the fluffiness low down.

Also popped in some 105 mains at the same time, just need to get her out on a decent run now to see if they've improved things higher up the range.
Title:
Post by: rybes on October 22, 2010, 08:44:13 PM
cheers Gav, ill give it a go. now do i buy new jets or drill the old ones out
been out on it again today and well what can i say ? i need new tyres. got those anakees on it n they dont seem to bad. only problem i found is ive run out of tyre n i still want to get more lean on it. give those plastic rocket jockeys summink to think bout when im right behind em on the twisites    jus cant do it with these tyres. so as soon as there worn out ill be fittin some conti road attacks n see how i get on then  8)
only other thing ive got to sort is a sticky front caliper piston and fine tune the suspension so i can really give it beans round the bends. i HAVE to get that center stand scrapin again. then once ive found were it hits i can see it bein drilled and tapped for som titanium bolts  :thumbsup apart from that. feels so good to be back on it :D
anyone considerin a hyperpro spring kit GET ONE ! ! ! the differnce it makes is unbeivable. i swear sometimes it feels more like a race rep than the tractor it is

Hey Rybes,

Been admiring that seat of yours for a coupla weeks, it looks the dogs doodahs. Who did it for ya? and more importantly what was the damage?

I've just picked up a 2nd hand seat of ebay for £10 that I'm looking at getting done, then if I ever sell the bike, put the original back on and sell the smart one seperately.

Hope your enjoying Denmark, visited Aarhus a few years ago, loved it.

Gav, Theres a bloke in Wales that can rebuild your seat in a "Corbin style".
He rebuilt my steamer seat, although i only had mine lowered and recovered.
Think he quoted me £150 for the corbin style.
He did an excellent job on mine, heres the details;

Post by: rybes on March 02, 2012, 12:28:12 PM
well, tis time to get these 3 spokes fitted i think. they been sat here long enough now.
had a play with the top yoke yesterday and just managed to find enough clearnace usin swept back risers. its tight but theres clearance.

the risers im usin look like this

once i was happy with the fit of the top yoke i took a hacksaw and grinder to it to take off those lil sticky outy bits. it now looks like this

so thats stage one sorry if the pics are big but when they were small ya jus couldnt see em well enough to see the clearance. now i jus have to go to the powder coaters n drop it all off

had the fork bottoms done in a black chrome finish. not to sure if ive made the right choice. didnt wanna do it the same colour as the ones on there as thats the same colour as the wheels n i thought itd look odd ?

spose i wont know till ive got it all fitted tgeva. the only other colour i could think of doin em was in the same wrinkled finish as the frame n swingarm but didnt fancy cleanin those.

well, theres tyres on the wheels so today i thought id put it all together. that was until i found that the bushes in the forks are shot so i need newuns. so until thursday all i can do is get the mudgaurd painted. expect lots of pics too
Title:
Post by: rybes on July 08, 2012, 09:35:19 PM
been busy today in the garage. rebuilt the forks up, which was just as easy as replacin fork seals and painted some bits and pieces too. now all im waitin for is the paint to harden on the mudguard so i can paint it red then hopefully weds will see it all put tgeva
now for the pics .....

here we have the forks waitin to be swapped out. after goin through lings parts bin for seals as the sprint ones didnt fit i found out that tiger seals were what was fitted. took 3 days to find that out. bastard !

decided to replace all the bushes inside too as the ones i took out were fucked. the old stanchions from the sprint legs were pitted to fuck and it done this to the bush.

built forks.

brake discs all masked up and painted

mudguard in primer. just waitin a day or two before i put the top coat on it.

painted brake cylinder and calipers.

last but not least the yokes all built up n ready t go on.

thats it for now.

im curious on that too mate. i just hope i aint made a wrong choice in colours.
what damper rod did you use RF ? i used the tiger one and a rough go with the tape measure says that these new legs are 5 inches longer    than the standard legs ? should i have used the sprint ones ?

I used all the Trophy fork internals and the Tiger original spring.

If i remember, when you put the spring in, it sticks out about an inch, although it might be different if you`re using the progressive springs, don`t know if they are longer than the originals or more tightly wound?

Don't bother, just buy a Roadie. They don't have huge support here but its a cracking motor if slightly sterile compared to the Steamer.

What you mean sterile Sin?

Been considering a Roadie for a while as its the only other Tiger that i like the looks of  :)

Perhaps a bit harsh, its just turbine smooth torque everywhere. No rattles and clanks that suddenly disappear to be replaced by that Exocet rush that is Iconic off the Steamer. Not a criticism really more of an observation. The 800 is a bit like that, tanking along feels like a breeze till you catch the Speedo or go into a familiar corner a bit faster than you thought you were going

In the short time I had on the Dora, I personally felt the engine had more character. Standby for  incoming

G'day, Rybes. Have loved your escapades over some time. More power to you! I have a question inspired by your mention of the importance of the brake lever's position in the bloody, stinking  bleeding of the system. Have struggled for many years to get a good feel on the lever. Would you elaborate on the required technique, please? Regards, Beernard.

cheers beernard. my advice, get someone else to do it  :icon_lol: what ive found works is blled it as normall till ya get out all the air as best as ya can. then once a week id re bleed em and always get air out again. takes a few weeks but eventually ya get a good lever. jus rememeber if ya got adjustable levers make sure its at its widest settin.  :icon_redface: makes all the differnce
