ok, well this past weekend I put some miles on my tiger-2up, and me and my passenger had sore rears......whats the best way to fix this with out spending a fortune? Don't really wanna buy a 300 dollar seat right now. After an hour in the saddle I could feel it, by the 2nd hour I was getting uncomftorable.
I welcome any and all suggestions.
You have to excercise, do more riding, and more often! :D so your stiff, old body gets used to it! And take a break every hour or so to stretch out.
Some adjustments of the bike can help, eg. handlebar up/down, lower footpegs, sheepskin on the seat.
arctic, No sore back, or stiffness anywhere, just a sore butt..LOL!!! I am in good shape, and do exercise, pretty much just think the seat is un-comftorable, maybe it is too soft, or just not shaped to match me?? I don't know.
Sheepskin pad.
Get some spandex bicycle shorts with chamois linings, as a first step. sitting on your ass all day cuts off circulation to the assle area. Moisture builds in this area creating discomfort. Airflow helps wick away moisture as do the bike shorts. Get you weight off your ass every 45-60 minutes. On solo trips I stand while riding.
The beauty of the aftermarket seat is the spreading of the weight over more area.. soft seats at the dealer, while promising a comfy rides are not good... so while the Corbin etc seats feel hard they ride better....
good luck

sheepskin pads, now I looked and see plain sheepskin, then I see sheepskin with gel, which one would be better, and does anyone make them that will fit the tiger driver and passenger seats??
thanks!

or try a beaded seat cushion. I think I picked up one from cyclegadjets. And keep in mind there is no magical fix. You get used to long rides by riding long rides.
I had a Corbin seat on my Transalp & Africa Twin for the same reason, but
never needed one on my Girly, the seat fits me perfect... funny tho' the bloke who bought the Africa twin had to change the seat back.
We're all different methinks...
lol @ Bob
I also wear cycling shorts on long journeys....

Im the same as you,i think the tiger seat is the most uncomfortable bike seat ive had, after an hour i want to get off and im in agony,a sheepskin helped alot,i find it keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer plus it makes a great pillow when camping, but i had the chance of a cheap Corbin and went for it,that said ive yet to try it as the bike is in for repair, you could try the Triumph Gel seat, they sometimes come up on Ebay,i was going down the route of buying a gel pad and fitting it in the seat myself but along came corbin, good luck and i hope it doesnt spoil your ride too much.
I have a stock seat modified by Spencer, along with an alaskaleather butt pad. I still get sore if riding more than 45 minutes or so.
I don't have many long trips completed yet maybe my arse needs more conditioning :)
I've been working out 6 days a week since Christmas, and have lost about 35lbs and it hasn't made a huge difference either so far.
I wish Corbin had a rental program so I could try it out :)
I'm hopint to figure something out, I had big dreams of far away rides, but right now I don't wish to travel much past the county line. And the wife is not to happy about her seating selection either,,,, So I pretty much have to figure something out. I'm gonna get some measurements on the seat tonight and maybe go the sheepskin route, or buy a cheap used seat and see about adding a gel pad to it myself and recovering it. Maybe even retrofit a goldwing seat!!!
My experience is that not only the seat, but hand, elbow, hip and knee angels are very important for overall riding comfort. Too tight, and even an hour in the saddle is too long.
I am tall and long-legged, and the footpegs on my -98 was way too high up, compared to the seat. Giving a very tight hip and knee angle.
If your knees are too high up, you end up sitting (wiggling) on your ass-bones, and a very small area of the ass is getting support from the seat. You will be "unstable" on the bike too.
I needed to get my feet lower, and have now mounted a set of "Mustang" lowering footpegs. Havent riden (its still heavy snow and winter here) with them yet, but just sitting on the bike feels more natural now.
ya, I'm sure alot of it has to do with body specifics, i'm oddly built as well at 6-2" with a 32" inseam, I may try the seat on the highest position and see what happens.
Quote from: "barbwire44"I may try the seat on the highest position and see what happens.
Thats something ive never played with and tbo never thought of,if the Corbin does'nt work out then the Gel seat will be next.
(... caution ramble ahead )
I read a good analysis of seats and what happens... a squishy seat isn't good and is why most gel seats don;t cut it for long rides and why most custom long haul seats are made to form to the rider, spreading out the load, and are fairly stiff to the touch.
The next step is the no seams, ventilated seating arrangement. Sheepskin helps by adding a layer of air flow under your butt, even when seated. Not wearing cotton next tot he skin is a must. Bicyclists are subject to some nasty chaffing potential and that is why they wear those shorts, and why I do.. to wick away moisture that gives one that clammy skin soreness.
Blood flow is part of it too.. and that is where the customs seats come in. by reducing the load on any one section of your butt, you get better blood flow over all. This helps keep the butt skin well nourished and prevents numb butt. By standing while riding (which you should only do once trained and under supervision and yeah, all that) or taking those breaks to stretch the legs...
be prepared... be hydrated... if you've been out drinking ( who us??)then you are likely dehydrated and this will really facilitate an ugly day in the saddle ( so I've heard)... it can take up to 18 hrs(??) for your cells to regain a nicely hydrated state....
another big one ( and one I suck at) is that core strength concept, that those rock hard abs are great for holding up your upper body on the bike and helping your knees grip the tank so your arms are floppy relaxed to ride with the bike and react.... :D
protect your butt... Love... your butt.

There must be someone within a few hundred miles of you that has a corbin or similar... make a post for other tigers riders to have a meet up and you can test sit any number of seats.. :D
( pssst.. offer them beer, they can't resist)
Solutions in order of el-cheapo-ness:
Develop a regime of exercises you and you pillion can do while riding along to increase blood flow and take the pressure off your posteriors.
I like to ride standing up for 5 minutes ot so per hour on IBA rides, this seems to reset everything for another hour or so.
Bicycle or LD comfort shorts. Get those stitched seams away from pressure points
Sheepskin seat covers -beautiful cheap mod.
Find a specialist who will study the way you sit and modify your stock seat to suit you better. Done well this is a lot cheaper with as good a result as a Corbin.
Sit on fleabay for hours and snap up a second hand Corbin.
"Be kind to your Ass, for it bears you"
ya, I think I'm gonna try the sheepskin, and I will be keeping my eye on ebay. Could also be I haven't been on a streetbike in a while, been two-wheel dirt ridin the last few years, but do more standing than sitting.
I use a beadrider (home made) on long rides and find it really helps, keeps you cool and lets you move around a bit more easily to change the pressure points. Very cheap too if you make your own!
never gave much thought to the bead covers, I guess if doesn't work out for sitting on,,,you could disassemble it at the hotel... :D
I think I have my seat all the way up currently (I'll double check) but I never thought about the pegs affecting arse comfort.
On the way in I rode with my toes up on the pegs to lower my knees. It did seem to help. I may be buying some more aluminum from Mustang soon :)
Most of my riding is solo, since I convinced the Lady a Versys was a good thing for her. On longer trips I go Tank-tank by shifting my feet back to the rear pegs for a time, guess it re-arranges all the pressure points and stretches legs muscles differently. But I've also noticed there are comfort differences with underwear styles/brands(?). I see I should be more conscious of those options.

Damn, beat me to it  perhaps Triumph bra and lacey panties are the way to go, I can just see the paramedics faces after they fish you out of the hedge
Beats that "not so fresh" feeling...
Speaking as one who knows, having had a jammed throttle take me over 100mph, the embarrassment's not so much what you wearing as what you've done in 'em
I do have a pair of mountain bike shorts with the padded seating area, and have rode with them on enduro rides, but they are a little too warm and snugly to be comfy while trying to relax on a slabbed cruise.
1030 miles in 22 hours,,,, I wanted to do some long trips,,,but not that long, that is impressive for sure, may have to look into a pair of those myself
+1 Plus I think the padding is in the wrong place on a motorcycle seat. The part of my arse that hurts on a motorcycle doesn't even contact the bike bicycle seat.
+1 on the beaded seat cover. I mail ordered mine from Whitehorse Gear - around $25 - $30. This is one of the best motorcycle accessories I've ever bought. My Girly has a Triumph gel seat, which is fair, but with the beads on top, sore butt is never a problem. I rode to Bike Week this month, (2,000 mile round trip), and the limiting factor for me was the size of my bladder and the stiffness in my knees. Several tanks of gas I went from fill up to warning light non-stop, (about 200 miles).
My last bike was a BMW R1150RS with a very nice Rick Mayer saddle and it even benefited from the beads. I think it's the extra air circulation and even weight distribution that makes it work so well.
Some people razz me about the look of the beads, but I just remind them that "when my butt's on it, you don't have to look at them."
Try them - I think you'll like them. It's a low cost solution.

They don't have to look at your butt either :ImaPoser
I think your comment about air circulation is a fair and the same may well be true for the sheepskins. I wear Draggin Kevlar jeans and itchy & scratchy is the limiting factor rather than soreness, if I wear my mesh riding pants over light trousers it's not a problem even though the riding pants have a butt impact pad in them.
What worked for me- Sheepskin, Raised seat, Risers, Miles in the saddle. Every adjustment changes riding position.
For the passenger, try a Triumph top box if you don't have one. A great backrest for the passenger, that can make all the difference in the world.
Gel seat
and sheepskin buttpad
works wonders
done a couple of 1000 milers with that combo and no probs
I have the triumph top box, back rest. Just watchin the classifieds and fleabay waiting for something to pop up. Did install my triumph touring windshield last night, and it was a nice improvement over the stock one!!
I used an air-hawk seat pad for a few years but it didn't solve my butt pain issue. I just got my shiny, new Russell Day-Long saddle. Problem solved! It's such a positive change I can't believe it. I saved up the money for quite a while and I'm glad I did!

Please allow me to jump in and tell you the LDComfort really do work. Many riders do over 1000 miles a day wearing them. Do not think the are "the same" as other garments. This one will keep your skin dry even when the fabric is wringing wet. See this video. http://www.ldcomfort.com/productdescrip ... #fabricvid (http://www.ldcomfort.com/productdescription.htm#fabricvid)

+1 I have a pair of long underwear performance clothing. The lower is the discontinued elastic above knee version from LD, and is awesome for all day comfort for entire lower torso and extremities. I also have a long sleeve top keeps me warmer when it is cold and cooler when it is hot. This all adds up to less fatigue... and that F word comes from many small but consistent forces, like sound and vibration and light, not to mention the need to concentrate for hours on end while riding. I wear earplugs not only to protect my hearing, but to decrease my fatigue. I use a internal flip down sun shield for to ease the burden on my eyes.... bar risers and lowered pegs and the Corbin make for a more relaxed/natural riding position... and the Stitch and good gloves etc etc... it all adds up... then there is the goldwing...
Thanks for the LDC tip, I think I might give them a try :thumbsup
Well I did get ahold of a gel seat, it will be here monday, that and a new cee bailey windshield after I just picked one up last week..LOL!! oh well could always use a spare, but I am excited to try the new seat!, then I'll be hunting either beads or sheepskin.
YOU'RE THE ONE! :x
I had the deal sealed on Wednesday night with that guy. He agreed to mail the screen and seat to me, and was getting shipping estimates on the cases.
Then a few minutes ago I get an email from him that he sold them local to a cash and carry! (but he shipped them after all?)
I'm obviously not mad at you, good deal especially for a local deal.
Please think of me if you change your mind on either.
Evil, I am sorry, I talked to him a few days ago and he said he didn't want to ship them. Then he looked up my email address and found out where I worked,,,I work for a company that sends products to a company he deals with, so I can cut out a middle man for future purchases for him,,,,,,, I will let you know If i decide to move the items.
Ya it was a smoking good deal, I wished he had an exhaust, I would have been all over that!!

Ditto. I got mine from beadrider.com. Contact them, they're very friendly and will send you the right size for the Tiger. I've used mine on road trips lasting thousands of miles, on road and off, and--combined with being in good shape and remembering to get off the friggin' thing and stretch--it's awesome. The only time NOT to use it is when it's cold. Then you will be ventilated in places you don't want to be ventilated in.
I choose to get a beaded seat cover for about $35 before laying out the hundreds of bucks I might have paid for a seat that may or may not have solved my problem. YMMV though.
No worries... Like I said you're not the one I have a beef with.
I appreciate the consideration. I've been looking for a way to "try" the Gel seat and that screen for a long time.
For what it's worth, I didn't get on with my gel seat, but managed to sell it for more than I paid (how often does that happen)?
I found it very hard in winter, even after my butt had warmed it - although I'm not over blessed in that area. Also, they hold the heat a very very long time if you leave them in the sun during the summer. And I mean ass-burning warm!!!
I've been on the road for about two weeks now, riding nearly every day. I had my seat modified by Spencer Motocare. My only complaint is that my left knee gets stiff after a couple hundred miles. My butt does fine. Longest day so far was 500 miles. I do wear bike shorts under my ride gear.
I'm holed up now in Phoenix dealing with some family issues and waiting for a new chain/spocket set.
I was OK with the stock seat but the Spencer mod really helps with the contour and eliminating the sliding forward feeling. Pretty good for $75.
It did definitely fix that sliding feeling.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a Russell Day Long seat. I too tried a gel seat but found that it sucked up heat in the summer and was hard and cold in the winter.
I've had Corbins, Rick Mayers and Sargent seats on previous bikes and none of them were as comfortable as the Russell I now have on my 2006 Tiger. Of all of those, the Corbin was the most uncomfortable with the poorest fit and finish and the worse fit to the bike.

I got my Russell Day Long last week. I've ridden 300 miles since and it's been the most comfortable ride I've ever had. Expensive but worth it, I think.

When I bought my Russell a year ago, I had them do just the front seat. The cost was $400 including shipping which is cheaper than other custom seats that I've bought in the past. The spring suspension system in the seat offers great support and the comfort to make my Tiger a true touring bike.
Wow... any more pics?

Here's a side view.
Man that does look nice... Doesn't look like it belongs on a dual sport, definitely belongs on a tourer, which is how I use mine :)
Quote from: "EvilBetty"Man that does look nice... Doesn't look like it belongs on a dual sport, definitely belongs on a tourer, which is how I use mine :)
I've always thought of my Tiger as more of a back road touring bike than a dual sport.
The downside to a Russell is that it's a taller seat than a stock or gel seat by about one inch. Here's a comparison between the Russell and Triumph gel seats.
I have a 32" inseam and I can easily flat foot the Triumph seat in the low position but I can only get one foot flat with the Russell. Took me a week or two to feel comfortable with one foot flat on the ground and the other on the ball of my foor. Now I don't even notice it.
That looks like it is worth $400. The Corbin doesn't impress me either. Way too hard.
Spencer is a great budget alternative, but the Russell is the bees knees.
Brooks,
That looks great!!!
Do they build on top of your original seat pan or build one up from scratch for that? Either way it looks great. I've been looking for a replacement seat for a while now and I think I've just fell in love at first site 8)
Rob
Rob,
They build on your original seat pan. Here's a link to their site.
http://www.day-long.com/ (http://www.day-long.com/)
They'll scheduel a build date for you and notify you when that is and then you send in your seat and they take about 2 weeks in-house before they return it.
Thanks Brooks,

But I am Diamond Plus!!!
who is the CD?
At the moment it is John Blair, just come back from vacation, been back a week or so, before him it was Clo from Ireland.
I had some mods to both seats done by Spencer. Great communication. Great job. Wife and I are happy with the results. My wife hasn't ridden on the bike for more than local errands; but I recently did a three day trip and found the Spencer-modified seat to be a gem. I could ride a full tank of gas without stops, and a full day with no regrets.
Caveat: I'm a relative lightweight at about 150 lbs., so that may influence things.
Well I am definately liking my gel seat over the stocker. And I liked the cee bailey, but my mirrors did not, gonna have to get some extenders on those before I use that shield again, but the shield definately takes care of the wind and made a few morning trips more enjoyable. That russel is ...wow!! thats a seat......
Can't you just tell me they both suck? That they burst into flames when they came into contact with oxygen when removed from their boxes?
Geez....
