Title: Off Roading the Tiger
Post by: Bob Tosi on June 01, 2010, 05:23:44 AM
So I have been doing some off road "practicing" with my new beastie.  Been rding short tracks of 1 - 3 miles on some lava cap, gravel and dirt side roads.
She's heavy and needs to be kept moving.  I find a line and keep the bike moving through it and try to be lite on the bars.  Use alot of body english to stear her around.  I find that you need to keep on the gas and ride the line out.  She gets squirrelly in the loose stuff but that could be my road tires.  Steep downhills are "SCARY" right now because of the tires.

So pony up with the advice on how I should proceed.  Obviously I need to get some good off road tires......

hey bob, talked to you a few times on adv( overthere im supercub). sounds like your figuering it all out. these guy's are top heavy to say the least, but  if you keep them moving there pretty docile. a good set of nob's will do you well. i dont run a good set so i suffer, this year will be different. picking up a 500lb  bike in the wet grass and mud (even laughing) sucks   so get a good set of tires.. practice riding while up on the pegs.  typical dirt bike stuff.  the most important thing is, just get out and ride(which it sounds like your doing), and remember it's a heavy pig in the dirt, so choose your path wisely. mudhen and fano and patrick should be chimin in soon :D     eric

its a heavy pig and the front wheel will wash out no matter what tire is on there  a knobby helps but will wear out fast , like really fast on the street .

even with a knobby on the front they like to fall over .................

it's a heavy pig with the weight up high , when it starts to go over you aint gonna stop it with any amount of body english

It's too heavy for real off road work.  Shale tracks, fire roads, forest paths fine.  Anything requiring signifcant weight shift will have you on your arse as Mustang suggests.

That's why Triumph needs to make the next Tiger significantly lighter.

Yeah, get rid of the road rubber and get some Anakee II's.

The front only washes out if you let off the gas, so....

RAMMING SPEED, MR. SCOTT!

I'd did some moderate off roading on my steamer, and I was amazed at how much better it handled the loosed stuff once I got TKCs on there.  It's still, a pig but it was a vast improvement.  Whatever year bike you have: get crash bars, pseudo-knobbies, and a friend to come along to help pick it up.

It will be slow and easy for me.  Nothing to crazy. still feeling the beast out.

Here's a video of the pre-ride the promotor rode last weekend:

It looks like a prime Tiger country. ( watch out for those water crossings though )

Hey Bob!  Nice work!  Word to the wise...I have that exact case.  Avoid washboardy, bumpy roads with it or you may lose it.  Take a close look round the latch mechanism on the base for cracking of the plastic.

Best bet is to disassemble it and bond all three layers of the latch, case bottom , and inner liner together with the adhesive of your choice.  I used Gorilla Glue and my case is now bulletproof.

A little 85 mile trip today with some folks from ADVrider, Local homies to ride with.  About 25 miles of dirt/gravel/logging /forest service roads.  Got to Phillbrook Lake in the high country, 6500feet, lots of dirt/grave roads...........A little insanity is good for the soul.

At Phillbrook Lake our destination:

A little road rash on my baby:

Near the end of the ride at the Bambi Inn:

:hello2

Awesome!!  Liking the road rash...story?

I say if you want to hang with those bikes off road, get some Karoos.  Like to old Audi ad said, 'I'll take all the unfair advantage I can get'.

Oh, and get some real handguards...and if those are stock Tiger bars, think about aftermarket.  I've heard the stockers like to bend...

I'll second that! Fantastic to see Tiggers out and about in their natural environment.

A small Question: Karoos or TKCs for on road use and wear? I know that either will be a big improvement on tourances for the central Australian trip, but there will be a couple of thousand kilometers on the bitumen before we hit the gravel. Which will stand up better?

TKCs will last longer than Karoos, no question (I think roughly twice as long is a general rule - and was my experience when I used them).  The tricky thing that only you can find out through trying them is just how fast you're going to eat them up.

A little to much throttle coming out of a rest stop.  The hand guards did their job.
