Title: Top Speed
Post by: New-Tiger on September 14, 2004, 02:33:51 PM
What top speed have people achieved(  [-X ) on their Tigers? I find that my limit is 100 mph. This is due more to the size of my nuts than the engine. I'm a new rider and i'm not used to being so exposed to the elements. The wind really seems to blow me about...

100mph is way more speed than anyone really need to ride their bike at - especially a tourer. I've never pushed my Tigger over the ton, as I'm quite comfy at around 80-85 - but in most cases 70-75 is not really that boring.

125 something 2up catching my friend on his 1100GS that was toped out. I'm not sure how much faster I got to as I couldn't get my eyes off the road in front of me.   Of course that was indicated so actual speed may have been less, but was fast enough for me.

I've had mine north of 130 a couple times.  It still had more.  It did 140 on the dyno and the guy running it (Rich King) seemed to think it would pull it on the road.  140 is were the rev limiter kicked in.

BP pardon me for smileing but i guess i'm at the other end of the spectrum!!

Before i SuperMoto'd my Tiger it would show well over 130 as did the demonstrator when i pasted it,after the conversion i had to add a Yellow box converter because of going to a 17" front wheel and i purposely set the speed up slow but with a 19 tooth sprocket at 8000 revs two up it'll show 125.

BP reason for smileing!! last year rideing back from Barcelona, spent the majority of the 16 hour trip way into three figures, for covering ground the Tiger really is one of the greats.

I dont make a note of top speeds and I have never tryed to see 'what it will do' down hill with the wind behind, but Susie did tick me off once with 124.7 recorded on the GPS after a little dice with a R1 on some open A roads, he was in the way through some of my fav bends and when the road opend out i went with him, he pulled a few lengths on me but got taken in the next set of bends.  :D  when we stopped she flicked the gps to the speed screen and gave me the lecture about losing my licence or having her come across the weckage and why did i leave her. after a coffee and lots of 'yes dear' 'no dear' she said "i thought the tiger could do more than that!". Women!

Mine did a comfortable 125 and just a little over on the clock when I first picked it up.  It's now showing 13,500 and is waiting for it's 12,000 service (I bought it just serviced with 2,500 on the clock and did another minor service at 8,500 so it should be ok for another week or two.). It now tops 120 quite easily, but feels a bit slower getting there than it used to.

Watch this space after the service!

Yeah i concur, i have had 125-130 racing my mate on his firestorm (he agreed)

Reckon it would have gone a bit more but the road was rapidly running out,and i was more interested in keeping my eyes on the road  :!:

Thats on a recently serviced 02 with 5500 miles on her.....

What internal differences are there between the Tiger and the Daytona?  The Daytona has much greater top speed.  I'd accept a small difference due to gearing, and perhaps a different state of tune, but what about compression ratios, cam profiles, valve or ignition timing etc.

I'd be interested to read if anyone knows just what is different?

Cheers,

              Shadow.

The old 'tig will go much faster if you hunker down behind the screen out of the wind blast when you give her the beans. Only problem is...when I'm that close to the clocks I can't read 'em. It feels like about 300 mph but I'm sure it's not quite as fast as that. 'Course...if you cover your body with badger grease (no offence, Badger) you could go even faster.

Removing your clothing and helmet will give you a slight edge, too.

And if you've got a hairy back, try shaving it.

Put it on the Dyno, stock geared 955 tiger the rev limiter kicks in at 140 even.  You are not going to go any faster than that.  And it should do that pretty quick.

Brock,

LMAO!!!!!  You've been looking at too many pictures of Rollie Free (150 + on a standard Vincent over 50 years ago just by stripping to his swimming trunks (On salt flats)! Now that would have hurt had it gone wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Charlie,

Even when fresh, my Tiger fell short of hitting 130 in normal riding conditions. I admit I never bothered enough to hold the gears all the way to the maximum, but I'd question your statement that in standard trim it should get to 140 pretty quickly?  Perhaps after it's service I'll find a long straight and really thrash it both ways to see if I can get there.

Cheers,

               Shadow.

Shadow,

My Tiger pulls right to the 130 mark on flat ground, feeling pretty strong.  It feels like there is quite a bit more there.  At 120 it still feels perky as long as there isn't a R1 or something running away from me.  I often run it right up to redline through the gears, ussually not the last couple.  And I have not run out top gear, for some reason passing 130 reminds me I am being stupid.  The only modifications to my bike is the Triumph off road exhaust and the appropriate tune.  I have 44,500 miles on the Tiger and it keeps feeling better.

BTW, The major differnces in the Tiger and Datona motor are Cams and tune.  Thought compression but in 02 they both had 11.7:1.  I would guess there are more subtle differences in the airbox and exhaust.  I don't know if they put on bigger throttle bodies.

I have to say the early demo that i rode ran round to 135 without batting an eyelid, but i wasn't all that suprised as Triumph are notorious for doing that to early demo bikes, god knows whta the new ST will do.

Talking of leaning over has anyone managed to scrape their footpegs

I can get very close [-o<  or at least it feels i do but the bike handles so well it just doesnt need to go that far,or is i just too chicken ?
Title:
Post by: Brock on September 17, 2004, 10:41:03 AM
I never thought it was possible to scrape the pegs on a Tiger until someone else (Blacktiger I think) said they'd done it.

Then it happened to me. Going quite slow around a Telford roundabout, with quite a nice, helpful camber. It happened so slow I even had time to think "blimey...this feels far over..."The peg just kissed the road, then the bike was upright and it was all over. It's happened a couple of times since, once on a really fast, smoothe left-hander coming out of a series of corners that had really warmed the edges of the tyres.

OK...it's not big and it's not clever. But it can be done.

Speaking of Rollie Free; he's my hero! - not really; but pretty brave dude;  here's a photo of one of his famous poses
Title:
Post by: Brock on September 18, 2004, 05:26:19 PM
Yeah...what most people don't know is that this pose was quite unintentional. Rollie tragically got his bollocks caught between the rear tyre and fender. Must have made his eyes smart a bit, but he did achieve a world land speed record for his pain.

IF you read the postings i don't think there is anyone who thinks their speedo is running correct,i'm not even sure mine is,all i can say is it's set a dam sight slower than it was, with 125 on the clock at 8000 with a 19T engine sprocket.

Well, I use a GPS quite a lot and compared the two often. The speedo seems to be remarkably accurate. Especially with new tyres.

My top speed so far was 120mph, recorded on my GPS. The bike didn't want to go much faster and was beginning to shake about quite a bit. I had a LARGE pack on the rear seat & rack and it was quite a windy day. Oh! And by the way. It was perfectly legal on a German Autobahn. Aren't the Germans wonderful?

My GPS reads just a two or three MPH less than indicated on the speedo.  Very good compared to the 7% error on my beemer.

I would agree; since I have been owning GPS's and using them on my bikes (or four wheel vehicles for that matter too), the Tiger has by far had the most acurate speedo. Most are in the range of 5-10% off - my old KLR was about the worst if I recall.

I've enjoyed this thread.

With my budget just about recouped from June, when my 2001 Tiger purchase blasted a large smoking hole in my savings, I'm embarassed to say that I actually don't have the financial wherewithall to cook along more than 5 or 7 mph over the limits.  I always back down.  Sorry, not good advertising for the Tiger community to have packs of sportbikes rocket by you I guess.

I do have a little story that you may all find interesting.

Lets say, you're out in the middle of nowhere with your riding buddy and you find a big stretch of open road that's straight with no entrances or exits or intersections for a while.  Traffic, miraculously, is nonexistant.  You decide, "Let's just see how high we can get this sucker."

Consider the following news >>article<<. (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/2/205_MPH_TICKET?SITE=1010WINS&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT)

Hi @ all, if you don't like speed you shouldn't read this post till the end.  :?

I saw a saved speed on a gps V of 144mph on a Tiger955 with racetune K&N airfilter and an open exhaust  . But with best conditions U can reach 146 - if allowed. Saw it two years before without my gps. The engine was @ 10500 rpm in 6th gear. The pointer of my speedo stands in the digits of the tripmaster.

But Tigers need a hard workout some days per month to go faster in 6th gear than in 5th. But thats only possible to do in Germany or on closed racetracks.

My topspeed is now about 141mph also with racetune K&N airfilter and an open exhaust (and with a crosshelmet and goretex-wear   ).

But you dont really need it...

Greetings McB

WOW! Feet up on the back pegs. Tried it today and boy, what a rush.  As for going 140 plus...... !!!

Approaching the 4-6000 service and seriously considering fitting a race can. It's just tough to justify changing a perfectly good exhaust though. My motto is if ain't broke don't fix it. Unless it gives you a few more hp....

I've got a race can and dymags on my tiger and have pegged it out at 130 mph plus give or take, also my foot pegs are completely ground down from doing too many track days so now I actually shift my weight way off the big beasty and have managed to get my knee down which was really weird the first time i did it but then ya kinda get used to it.

That was with sportec m1's on the bike.

What I absolutely love about my tiger is creeping up on sportbikes in the real tight twisties and blowing their doors off, grin factor of plus 10.

I also wear full leathers black of course to match my really cheap matt black paint job with obligatory skulls.

This bike gets more looks now than it did when it was a green meanie

I know what you mean. I was at Daytona this year and i stuck one of the stickers on the front door of the H.D. dealership and watched the reaction and it took about 10 minutes befroe they figured it out and then they were pissed and talking about the dire consequences if they ever caught the asshole that had the balls to do such a thing, which just confirmed what I thought that they don't have a sense of humor.    :D/
