Title: 955 V's 1050
Post by: qbto on August 18, 2010, 10:04:41 AM
Anyone traded from a 955 to a 1050 ?
How far apart are they in performance ?

OK
I admit I haven't traded up but every time I take my bike in for service my dealer pushes me toward the new model (surprise surprise).
I have to admit the 1050 is sharper with more go and stop and more sporty handling but when I get back on my late 955i I feel more relaxed and comfortable.
Now you are all saying thats just because I am on familiar territory which is true but it is also because the Girly is a slightly different tool.
A couple of friends and I are off to the Pyrenees ( yeeh ha!) in a couple of weeks and for my money my bike is the one I want to be on.
So in the end in depends on what you want the bike to do.
As a red herring I got the bike serviced in advance of the trip and they gave me a Street triple. Jesus! I forgot how much of a hooligan I can still be.

Have an 06' 955, have ridden a couple friends 1050's.  The 955 and the 1050 share the tiger name...that's about it.  The 955 ride can be tuned a fair bit to be either more dirt or street specific but remains a soft multipurpose ride.  The 1050 is all street and very tight...similar ergos as the 955 but rides like a sport bike.  (and the luggage sucks...neither side cases nor the top case will fit a standard full face helmet)

I like the 1050 motor & improved FI, but prefer the 955 frame, body & ergos on my 06'. I don't NEED any more HP. I already got enough trouble with the Uly 'hooligan' bike. The Tiger is slowly creeping towards the door end of garage more often then the Uly. I think I hear them occassionally arguing down there, or actually...maybe NOT arguing ?!  Yikes! - i may be having a litter of "Tuly's"

A mate of mine has a Street Triple he's still learning to cope with how fast it turns.

Thats IT!! I'm hearing a lot of growling & commotion... & then gets real quiet. Hmmm - they seem to be arguing more too...perhaps they got married?

I had a 1050 as a loan bike while my 955 was being serviced.

I'm afraid I still love the 955i, can't put my finger on why just a lack of x factor

Having ridden a 1050,i think the motor is way better than the 955,as much down to the fact the Sagem lot never got a proper handle on the fuelling even after what 8 years!!,the Jap injection is bang on first attempt.

I've run my 955 for 7/8 years on 17" wheels bur prefer the ergos of the 955.

I like the 1050, my wife hates the massive step in the seat. To be honest the 1050 goes most of the places I take my 955, even on street tires. It's that last rutted fire trail I can take Tigger up that would be very difficult on the 1050 that keeps me hanging on to mine.

That and the fact that I have another triple in the shed with 150 horses for when the inner hoon calls  8)

It's as if Triumph said to themselves "let's see if we can come up with the bikers equivelant of Botox" , I have never felt such an idiot and while still having so much fun, if my wife finds out she'll leave me for an older man

This is my first post here so hope it is not a big no-no to kick an old thread. I'm having my current bike for sale and am looking around for a Tiger 955i. Then suddenly I got a really good parts exchange offer on a 1050. Since then looking around for info on the 955 vs 1050, this is exactly the topic dealing with that question  :notworthy  Found usefull info, in the (hopefully near) future you might se me back here, either in the Girly section or the Roadie part  :wave

Done. I'll give a hint: the nick Dutchie was given to me over 20 years ago when I was travelling around a bit. It's not very original but since this was done by a farmer on a cattle station somewhere in the Australian outback it's forgiven.

Having lived on the Dutch border for 3 years, I kinda guessed.  I don't remeber much other than drinking a lot of beer and wearing orange  :hat10

I have ridden the 1050, 800 and owned a steamer and now an 02 955i. Which one will become a classic??
The 1050 is a great road bike/tourer, best all round engine but I think it looks dull. I love the steamer, best looking of the lot, just couldn't live with the relaibalilty, lots of electric, staring issues. 800 especially XC is a fantastic bike, I just don't like the instrument/dash layout, all looks unfinished and too like a GS. My money's on the 955i, classic engine, loads of character, pretty good both on and off road. I hate the plastic tank but love the analogue dials and layout. And it drinks oil like a bastard!!

Funny you comment on the oil consumption; a few of them do that but it's not all that common.  Evil Betty is the expert if I recall rightly.

Sad but I own and ride all three of those, rode a Girly but never owned, personally the looks didn't speak to me.

The Steamer gets it for looks and character, oil and reliability has not been an issue, maybe just lucky.
The Roadie is very competent, much more than it looks or on paper, for me anyway the comfort is excellent after sorting the screen and bars, chrome  :doubt dip beam is shocking and the looks in stock trim are a little too close to a Fazer.
The XC is so good at just about everything I have asked of it, some might say its on the bland side for a Triumph, it certainly has zero quirks. The more I ride it, the more I think, do I really need an Explorer, want is another matter

The Multi is pretty mad by all accounts, a Street Triple in hooker heels but I've heard that it's tyring on longer journeys.

The jelly mould looks let down an otherwise excellent all-round bike.

Nothing wrong with jelly molds. Morris Minor looks great and always will. I like the look of the 955i. It's distinctive and unique. If only they'd designed it with a decent screen.

I guess I just have to try to test ride both the 955 and the 1050 then when weather and mainly road conditions cooperate.

There are 3 outstanding differences between the two,the first is engine the 1050 is a league better for the simple reason it's had more R+D and Triumph switched from French Fuel injection to Japanese.

The 1050 has 17" wheels with all the advantages of a better selection of rubber that brings,I see on the latest test of the watercooled GS scribes mention how they were suprised that BM carried on with the 19" front 17" which gave the same old vague feel and thats why I ditched mine on my 955.

The 3rd which is never mentioned and thats fuel tank size the 1050 is 19L as opposed to the 955 which 24/5L and that does make a difference when looking for fuel.

Fourth is that the 1050 doesn't have an expanding petrol tank  :hat10 I find 200+ miles on the roadie tank not a problem, motorway speeds with side boxes.

Winter -like Pope or Dutch Queen- is thinking about a retreat, so I was thinking about trying to arrange a decent test ride on a 955 and on a 1050. But last week an '05 955i happend to pop up that I couldn't resist. Considering my location and nick, obviously it had to be an ORANGE one  :wings

I still have to make some pictures, I'll show them in the Girly picture thread later.

Cheers, Dutch

Or is that a bit like being turned on by the big blue chick in Avatar?
