Title: What bikes do you wish you still owned?
Post by: Tigertriple on April 18, 2011, 01:40:03 PM
I know it's a bit self indulgent, but I was looking through some really old pics and found a few of my early bikes.

This was my Triton which I had in 1980 went like shit off a shovel but very low top speed due to being geared down. I could be wrong but I think the engine was bored out to an 850cc

My first liquid cooled bike was this Honda CX 500 I had this one in 1982 great old bike and they still fetch good money.

When I first got in to bikes I was in to motocross and trials and the one of my first road bikes in 1979 was a Yamaha DT175 at the time they were the dogs bollocks as they had  monoshock suspension. I had a few of these including a race tuned one which was amazing. Yes this is me when I was a young lad.

I don't know why, but I had a Honda 250 super dream in 1983. With all the fairing attached it would not pull you out of bed. More like a Nightmare than a super dream.

Well I hope I haven't bored you all to death  :D  :D  :D

If there were any bikes I wish I still had, it would probably only be from a monetary point of view.

Ok, Im not old enough to have had early Bonnies and the like, but I do remember having a go on a mates T140 in the late 70's, and I wasnt impressed that much, my 350 S2 kwak was quicker, and didnt rattle your fillings

Maybe the RG500 that nearly killed me in the mid 80's, but purely from a Nostalgic point of view again, and for the stroker smell.

Oh, and maybe the bike before the Tiger, the ol BM R1100S, although a bit agricultural I still think it was a very good allround package.

The one bike I wish I still had was also my very first .............

1973 RD350 YAMAHA

god I miss that bike it was incredibly fast and would embarrass anything stoplight to stoplight ..........bonnevilles were no match , it could run from anything ,especially as the road got twistier

This DT125R was my first and I miss it every day.  Sold it to fund the steamer purchase.

Am idly thinking about similar KTM 300 perhaps.... 8) [/img]

Which bike do I wish I still owned - all of them!!

Had various bikes over the years, bought for varyious reasons, but being a bit self indulgent I wish they were all still in the garage.

Saying that though can't see the point in having a '98 T595 and a 2000 955. So just to please the missus (in this fantasy) I'll drop the T595. She always says I love the bikes more than her, now I can prove her wrong.

Although it tried to kill me more than once, it's one race bike I wish I'd never let go.

Technically, they are.
In reality, most of OUR plod are not that interested in writing for equipment violations, unless in a very bad mood.
In actuality, I was never cited for the lack of mudguards, or the utter lack of baffling in the pipes.

And if you've ever been to a flattrack race, that is EXACTLY how this bike sounded.  :D  :D  :D

Many two wheeled memories, but a few I truly miss:

1980 Transalp ... stolen from my front yard (WDC) in 1981; finished pay'n for it in 1982.

1994 R100GSPD ... sold to buy a watercraft I never used ... just stupid.

1999 Honda Valkyrie Interstate ... I miss her, but not the 20 mpg (30 if I really, really behaved - read once) ... the wife misses here more, but the wife wouldn't let me spend on other projects 'cause she figured I didn't need other, less comfortable (for her) bikes.

I've owned at least a score of other bikes, but funny that two of the three I really miss were adventure bikes and the third was a tourer.  Funnier still that I can still remember a comparison test article which led me to the Transalp purchase - matched the Transalp against the Beemer and the Tigger.

That typed, I still have my Moto Guzzi Ambassador and I won't be lett'n her go.  Also in various states of repair in my personal boneyard are a Honda Magna, a Honda 400 Twin, a Suzi GS1000, and a Honda Elite Scooter.

Mine aren't that old:

2003 Royal Enfield. Totaled.

2006 Speed triple.  Traded in a moment of weakness.

2004 KTM 950.  If I had to get rid of all my bikes, and own only one, this did everything well.

My ST1300's were great bikes but not as much fun as the Tiger

This ST was an ex Cop bike which had the frame chopped.

I wish I still had the America as it was fun for cruising around on

Hello Tiger, goodbye America

Another cool cruiser was my 1997 Honda VT Shadow 750 I had this bike 2 years ago. Check out how well it looked for its age.

This 450 Yamaha enduro almost ended my biking days as I tore several muscles in my leg kickstarting it. The compression was so high is was a nightmare to start.

My first dare I call it an adventure tourer. Honda Transalp 650. I had this for a few months before I bought the Shadow. Tidy little bike but very under powered

I had a Kawasaki ZR 750S  for a few months a couple of years ago. A fun bike. Bought it for a real cheap price and made a good profit when I sold it. I wish they were all like this

Ariel Golden Arrow 250cc two stroke twin, leading link forks, pressed steel frame with the tank under the seat (BMW did not invent everything and that includes the beak), urban legend has it that the original Yam RD 250 was modeled on that Ariel engine/box.

Wish I had known what a good bike it was at the time, but then I was 15 and didn't know sh1te, ahead of it's time in quite a few respects.

My '62 Triton. It had/has? a pre-unit 650 engine with a close ratio Norton Dommie 88 Gearbox. 10.5:1 hepolites with an old 8 stud head, would blow head gaskets about once a month.

Bonnie America from 2005. Sold it when I moved to Sweden STUPID! STUPID !!!!!

Well, I'd post pics, but dont have any &...they'd all be black & white anyway. I miss 'em all, but list would be way too long. My First bike - 58' Tiger 110, My first NEW bike, 65' Honda 305 'scrambler',  68' Norton 750 Commando, and lastly, my 08' Uly. Things have come a long way since my carb'd, kick start, 4 spd, drum brake days. Loved their simplicity though.

KK is that a Tiger Cub ? There not meant to run. I had one as a field bike when I was 14 and spent all my paper round money at Ross Motors on bits for it. The fooker never ran.

I was given a Suzuki TS 90 by one of my neighbours who had it lying around and not using it because it needed a throttle cable. Fitted a new cable and ratted it until it fell apart about a year later. When he gave me this bike it was like winning the lotto.   or at least that's how I think it felt.

Funny seeing that, when my brand new 885i Tiger went phut after 6 weeks, that was after it had already been into the dealer because they came on the phone screaming blue murder to stop riding it as all the internal engine bolts had been plated with the wrong stuff and was flaking off and blocking the oils way!!!.

I phone Triumph up direct, ,'Look here matey the first bike I ever bought was a Triumph(Cub) and it's taken me 30 bleedin years to pluck the courage up to buy another and 6 weeks to regret it   ,I get another new one and didn't trust that either, but then I bought a 955  :D

I don't wish I had any of e'm,although my old 750 blue H2 would be nice for my pension scheme, and when the day comes a nice YR3 turns up I'll put my hand in my pocket.

The stock phrase of Mr Ross was " I'll give you £2.00 for it" said in his thick Polish accent no matter what you wanted to sell him. You could have taken in a Gold Star engine and that would have been his top offer.

Sadly there's now a block of flats built on the site. Happy days

Hi Fraser, I can't say I remember him but there was a wee guy called Robert that worked there who seemed to dislike old Mr Ross as he always gave us a better deal.

An old mate of mine was in Ross's good books and always got access to the best stuff. There should be a sign put up on the flats to commemorate this as being a site of historical biking significance. Much like the old Lugton Hotel

Awesome looking at all your bikes. Funny how it's not all about the biggest, best, most expensive etc eh, but that thing that made you really enjoy it at a particular time of your life for what ever the reason.

My best memory of a bike was a Yamaha XT 550 back in 1983 purchased as brand new. It was the bike I did the most miles on, had the most fun on at a part of my life when I was free & breezin (if you know what I mean) At the time it did everything well, I lived up a steep winding road that climbed 1000ft in about 5km with 5 hairpins. I could really push myself & the bike to the limits. Good memories.
Best cool bike was a 1928 BSA Sloper that I restored. Sold it to a guy up the road, he still has it.

But the Tiger is the best bike I've ever owned, and would much rather be riding her than the Beemer!!

hmmm got to dig deep for some of these pics

CB100Big One  loverly bike but we didnt play well together she got me into all sorts of trouble

Suzi bandit 600 , only i cant leave things alone , TTS800 coversion deep brace arm WP suspenders and a full race micron :D yup we got into a lot of trouble too

thought maybe its time to slooow down a bit and this is where my love of giant triallie's began  my first africa twin she got a work over too

i even went through a hawg phase   and one day could be tempted by another but not a freakin shovel head it was a bastard nightmare , but really did go with a sense of theatre where ever we went
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm249/KTM_dude/P1010023.jpg)

after this my First GS :D from this
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/GSchad_photos/bm-first-pics-003.jpg)

to this
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/GSchad_photos/PBPmarmite016.jpg)
 :D

then i had a mighty Varadero   :D
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/GSchad_photos/PBPmarmite036.jpg)

but after a while the call of the africa twin was strong again (MIND YOUR EYES )

However after a couple of months i really missed the bigger bikes Firepower  and the wife made the fatal mistake of saying oh FFs just get the bike you want and be done with it

and along came the mighty KTM990ADV  oh how i loved it but i do big miles and the servicing and running costs were just a bit spitefull for me
(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/GSchad_photos/phonepics019.jpg)

so after 15 thousand miles in 11 months i let the KTM go and got a second GS but the ADV this time :D 40.000 trouble free miles in two years it broke my heart to let it go but last year i ruined my back at work , and she had to go to pay the mortgage whilst i was off work , oh the sweet joy of self employment

so when the GSA went i was without a bike for about 8mnths wheni was fitish again a fellow member here Jaqueslemac needed a home for his 955 over the winter months and entrusted her to my care :D
 :D

a picture i posted here on one of my first rides , i loved it :D

and so it brings me to my latest acquisition that my beloved wife surprised me with earlier this year :D

(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm249/KTM_dude/acd3b491.jpg) :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

if i honestly had the chance i would keep them all :D ,,, but truth be told my tiger cost £1800 and pound for pound is providing the best value for money motor cycling for me to date :friday  :headbang

sorry for rambling on :qgreenjumpers

Some great bikes in there Chad!

I kinda miss my first big bike, a GPZ 500. It was £600, never needed any work doing on it, didn't even service the thing for 10,000 miles and it just ran and ran and ran.

An absolutely bullet proof bike. Loved it! It even had enough power to keep up with the big boys when road well :)

Well hell...

Okay, I don't actually wish I still had any of my early bikes; but the CB550/4 was pretty sweet (right up until it was stolen). But I do wish I still had my '04 Thruxton.

Had to downsize, so the Thrux had to go (along with all of my other bikes except for my '97 Trophy 3). I tried to replace it with a Scrambler; but sadly it just wasn't quite the same.  8)

Would still love to have my  '75'  RD250, ran it stock for a year then swapped out the barrels and pistons for 350 parts. Cheapest best upgrade, but you also had to put 350 gudgins in or the pistons flew apart. (The things they don't tell young fellas)

Playing with the jets taught me how to get 60mpg, with a careful wrist... and also took me to the school of 'cease'.

The RD350C A lot of fun and falls and learning (in the hands of a teen).

I miss my 2000 GS500E, it was my first "real" bike... and the first time I could cut my teeth on modifying a motorcycle.... started as a stock bike... ended up going with Vance and Hines, KnN, Jet Kit, GS500F headlight, vortex sprockets, super-bike bars, chopped rear fender, and upgraded brakes... this thing was awesome... sold it out-right for the cash to buy the Tiger.

First bike I learned to wheelie on... first bike I learned to do a burnout on... I miss it dearly.

Hmmmm, I would not be unhappy to have any of the bikes I have owned. These would be near the top of the list, though:

My first bike, a '72 Honda 175. Did everything on that bike, including camping trips with my friend, him on his CB250.
My first 'big' bike, and the first one I got when I came to Canada, a '77 Suzuki GS750. Sold it in '80, got it back this year.
'79 Yamaha XT500. Had one in '80 and another in '07.
'71 Norton Commando.
'10 Thruxton. Both of the last two sold to fund the down payment on my home.

The VFR was my 'office' when I was a rider instructor. Put 90,000km under its wheels in the 5 years I owned it; still had the original chain and sprockets thanks to the Scottoiler. I'd have it back in a moment. :icon_salut:
The Yamaha was my 'born again' bike after a lay-off of 15 years or so. Funny how getting married and having kids take priority....... :icon_wink:
The CB650 was my commuter bike when I worked 1000km north of where I lived. Despite being 27 years old when I got it I had three trouble-free years with it. Sadly missed. :icon_sad:

The bike I regretted selling the most was a 1981 750 Bonnie we bought brand new in Dec 81. Was my daily rider for most of the 17 years I had it. But one of my mates wanted it and pestered and pestered me to sell it to him until one day, in a moment of weakness, I agreed.
So about 2 years ago I decided he'd had it long enough and started pestering him, until earlier this year I finally wore him down and he agreed to sell it back to me.
It actually came back almost exactly as it left, even had the same tyres that were on it when I sold it to him.
Since getting it back I've fitted new tyres and replaced the Hyde rearsets with the standard footpegs (legs don't seem as bendable as they were 30 years ago). When we bought it we used to tour 2 up all over the place and thought it was perfect, but now if we're going to travel 2 up the missus says its the 955i Tiger or nothing

And no its not oil leaks under it, I'd just washed it
Cheers Mossy

My first "new" bike a Yammy YX600 aka Radian. It was basically a naked FZ600. This isn't my bike but just like mine. I rejetted mine, added K&Ns, pipes, and ported the head. Went like holy heck. Easily kept up with my friends FZ750.

Best memory: doing a dirt track power slide on some fresh asphalt, felt very "Kenny Roberts", even left a nice strip of rubber on the road. And she didn't high side, which I thought was very considerate of her. :-)

Just two for me.
1, 1976 RD350B in silver. My first ever brand new bike. Traded in with 18000 miles and chronic piston slap for a new XS750.

2, 1978 XT500. Probably the best commuting bike ever made. Practically ran it into the ground commuting 20 miles each way for a few years. It did take me to Pisa & the south of France one year. Sold it with 38000 miles on the clock.

I concur. Once you get the knack of how to start the thing it is a real joy to ride. I did a 2000km+ trip over the Rockies on mine, in the course of a long weekend, with no problems at all. Parts and upgrades readily available too....

Yeah, it's one of those things that's easy when you know how. So long as the points and tappets were set right it'd start first kick.
And the same technique I used for that also worked on XR Hondas and a KTM600LC4 that I had years later.

The photo of my Duc 750S 1972 still breaks my heart  :icon_cry:
As a little consolation.... I still wear my Cromwell in summer

Very light, ultimate steering and sound!  (with BSA pancake air filters  :icon_wink: )
At my age now, stiff suspension and steering position would be a pain (maybe this caused my back injury...?)

Aaah! what a bike!
