Title: I must be a giant sucker...
Post by: Cos on June 13, 2011, 12:30:57 AM
So i bought an Aprilia Dorsoduro...it's gone. Nice bike and all but a combination of factors brought about its demise. Tank range was pathetic (100 miles to the tank, maybe), had a few electronic glitches, couldn't tune the freakin thing and Aprilia Cyprus went boobies up. Screw that.

Enter the Yamaha Tmax. I figured "why not?".  Weeell, i'm not a maxi scooter guy, that's why not. My feet weren't where they were supposed to, the wheels felt too small, the whole experience was not to my liking. Not to mention that my dearest buddy JetdocX wouldn't stop laughing at me. So...off to greener pastures went the Tmax.

Which brings us to the whole "sucker" bit. Years and years ago (or something like that) Cyprus actually had a Triumph dealer. They were idiots, screwed up and we've been Triumphless for gods know how long. Nonetheless, the memory of that showroom remained. Especially vivid was the memory of this yellow bike that was on a revolving stand. Round and round it went, showing off its naked wheel to lusting onlookers.

What's that got to do with this thread you ask? Weeeell...it might not be yellow...and it's not a T595...but i went and got myself another discontinued bike. Sucker!

2006 Daytona with a mere 7.5 k miles on her.
I owe iansoady big time for checking the bike out for me in the UK.
I picked her up yesterday and put 250 miles on her today...the girl might be a bit old but she's still one hell of a road bike.
Like my Tiger, this one just might be a keeper.  :D

You might say it's a Fireblade with a proper accent.

If it weren't for my dodgy back, I'd be right jealous.

Oh shit!  Dibs when I come to Cyprus!  Imagine pulling up to a topless beach wearing that bike!

That's sweet, Cos.

One for the nicest sounding bikes I ever heard was one of those with a custom underseat exhaust and no baffles.  Its rasp made the hairs on your neck stand on end.   8)

The island is full of GSX-Rs and R-1s and other more modern sportbikes that'll leave my poor outdated Daytona in the dust.

It's still a fun bike though :)

Well, i had to do something when you said you refused to ride the scooter.

That antiquated right side up fork works great on the street by the way.

I gotta say, though it's supposed to be a relic as far as sportbikes go, it's fast enough for me and it sure as hell handles better than my limits are.

And that single sided swingarm is schweet.

P.S. There's no such thing as a non-topless beach here so we just call them "beaches". Massive influx of Russian tourists this year too.

Who are you calling old? My 2004 955i is insulted.
When you need a long ride to clear your head do you have to ride around the island 3 times?
Title: Love the Daytona
Post by: Colonel Nikolai on June 14, 2011, 06:19:22 AM
Love that bike. There are tricks to making it faster, much faster. But the question I always have for the R1 crowd is what's the "usable" power of it? You need an awesome suspension to even use most of the power you have. IMHO, concentrate on that and you'll have more fun anyway.

I resemble that last remark.

Two...i ride around the island 2 times.

Cyprus is big as far as islands go and there are a lot of twisty roads. Quality for quantity i guess, although i wouldn't mind having both. Still, the Continent is always an option, and Turkey is only a short ferry hop away.

How much is a return ferry to Turkey then COS?

The North West of Cyprus has some of the best biking roads I have seen in my globe trotting. Especially those that lead in to the centre through the mountains and cultivated forests. Absolutely ace!!!

zoom in and see the plethora of twisties

Been a while...

Got new clip-ons on the old girl...OEM were killing me. Also fitted a radial m/c from a GSX-R.

Nice, the clip on's look familiar, same as a set I bought for the Thruxton. How do they feel? I'm not 100% sold on the taper clamp.

Quote from: "Sin_Tiger"Nice, the clip on's look familiar, same as a set I bought for the Thruxton. How do they feel? I'm not 100% sold on the taper clamp.

They're Tarozzi/Sprint mfg clip-ons. To be honest, I bought them used because they fit my budget. If I had the money I'd have bought Gilles, LSL or Cyclecat but they're pricier new and extremely difficult to find used.

So far they feel good. They had to be drilled for the controls which was a pain and because of the fairing and that they aren't Daytona specific, adjustability is a bit limited, especially when it comes to height. See where they are on the forks? We also had to McGuyver the bracket for the brake fluid pee cup. Also, we had to come up with an adapter for my existing bar ends.

Still, they seem to be ok for what they are. Wasn't sure about that clamp either so we tightened the poo out of it. Nothing has moved yet. I am definitely enjoying that they are a bit wider and flatter than OEM. I feel more secure, more comfortable and it's easier to throw the bike into a turn and change directions.

I hope that wasn't too wordy

Pleasure. How are they working out for you on the Thruxton?

That's phase 2 of the project. The engine is getting the treatment just now, followed by the front brake and forks.

Clip on's are sitting in the back room with the half fairing

Busy with the credit card, not much to show for it yet. I do hope my dear wife doesn't decide to gold the cylinder head gasket before she mails it

I'm aiming for a funday bike like yourself, without the license riskand in a retro way. Much though the Striple hit the spot in every way,I felt a but of a grey beard fraud on it

Sounds good to me.

And i would've probably ended up with one of the retros but the buggers hold their value a lot better than the Daytona.
