Steamers (1993-1998 Tigers) / Re: Ignition Coil?
Last post by Aeschere - October 29, 2024, 08:48:44 PM
Hello,

It has been a while since I was last active or have ridden my Tiger. I still need to get around to replacing the coils. It seems that the Honda CBR600RR has the same coils, and those are cheaper, and easier to find than the Triumph 600TT coils.

However, I am confused about how to connect the stick coils. They have different connectors than the current coils and I don't have enough electrical experience to go on by intuition.
Does anyone have some pictures of how to perform such an exchange?

Thanks in advance!

It would be interesting to compare the Tiger 1200 with the 800. I have understood that it feels a lot heavier than the 800. And then the comparison to the RT might be interesting as well. But the Tiger 800 is a great bike. It just misses that cruise control. ;)

A confession!

A couple of weeks ago I looked at a BMW RT1200rt  :bug_eye

I was having a chat with one of my work colleagues as we also use the BMW R1200rt as part of our operational fleet. Not only does he ride one for work, he also has one in his garage for personal use.

Having now ridden the BMW back to back with my Tiger 800XC, you may be asking 'is Lee about to desery Triumph, is he about to jump ship and join 90% of the local Advanced Motorcyclists in his area & switch to BMW?

Short answer - No!

Can't see a reason why I should. The Tiger suits my riding style and to be fair, the only real advantage I can see is the cruise control (my right hand can sometimes cramp up when riding long distances) and if/when I do change bikes, it will have one.

But so does the newer Tigers

I also looked at a Tiger 1200 & if I wanted to go up in engine size, I'd be tempted to get one of those.

Girly Talk (1999 - 2006 Tigers) / Re: Tune ECU Knowledge

The Tiger 955i runs a Sagem MC1000 ECU.There are basically 2 models, spoked wheels (early) and cast wheel (late)

Last 6 numbers are the ones you want. The switch from spoked to cast was at VIN #206546, so any VIN below this was an older spoked wheel Tiger.

I have a Blueflame exhaust on my cast wheel model (2006) running map 10173 (original map is 10172). For earlier bikes, which I suspect your's is, then you wants map 10121, which is for bikes fitted with an after market exhaust. Technically it's for a TOR *Triumph Off Road) exhaust, but the map generally works for other after market cans too. The original map for spoked wheel Tigers should be 10120.

The Wife is probably going to kill me but a just bought a 2005 955i to go along with my 2006. The main reasons it has a really nice CeeBaily windscreen that is no longer available and a Corbin seat. It has roughly 63,000Km, running quite nicely, but a little ugly from a mishap with a deer. Front fairing has a grapefruit size hole, signal lights need to be replaced, side bags are beat up.
I am not sure what I am going to ultimately do with it. It may become a donor bike, or I might Part it out after I grab what I want,Parts are hard to obtain and get shipped here in Canada. Or I might just fix it up and give it to my Son or Son in Law, or sell. Roulette green, older clutch arrangement.

I have a 2006 model with around 64000 miles. They're a nice, comfy bike (I'm 5'10). Let's say they're not perfect but have character. Service them regularly & the engine's bullet proof. Brakes need occasoonal rebuilds which i do as part of my annual service. Electrics can be challenging, especially the charging circuit but probably no worse than any other 18+ year old bike. Done a few weeks away on mine with no issues & it'ss happy at 70mph all day.

I currently have a '14 Tiger 800xc but can't part with the old 955i. She's still road legal & I still ride her every now & then.

Maintenance is key in keeping them going.

Quote from: TX_Grubby on June 23, 2024, 07:57:07 PMWent out for my weekly Sunday sanity ride. When I got back home, and after parking I noted a spot of oil underneath the bike. Any thoughts? I wiped it all down to see if I could locate where it came from but nothing since. Recently had the 24k Service done.

Did you resolve this, TX? My first thought would be "Does this oil match what you lubricated your chain with?"

If not, and since it has the look of engine oil, I would suspect the seal behind the countershaft sprocket. (I recall this can be caused by a drive chain adjusted with too little slack, putting excessive tension on the countershaft.)

If the seal is the issue, and though I've not had to do it on my Tiger with 108,000 miles, I think it's a fairly simply replacement of the seal.
