Charging woes

 My buddy has a 2002 Sprint. While riding this weekend he lost one battery and then a second one as the charging system was not working. Having read in the girly thread the common issues with the charging system for the 955, I just wanted to check here to see if the sprint has the same sytem? Just trying to help point him in the right direction.

does it have an external alternator like on the 99-2000 girlies
if not it's gonna be a fried stator and regulator/ rectifier
usually both need replacing at the same time  for success
