Miles without incident: 700.   I am now moderately confident that I have solved the problem.

I now have 1200 miles incident free since removing the sock filter on the primary intake.  (I have not removed the sock filer on the reserve intake or the OEM in-line filter.)  I am now confident that the problem is solved.

My '96 used to do this as well.  Bought a new petcock in addition to re-routing the line and haven't had it happen since.  Guess I may not have had to do the reroute afterall!

I wonder if as the petcock gets old the issue may resurface...
