So needed a new airbox and was able to get one off ebay, included a K&N but when I cracked it open to clean it, and then compared to the K&N that came with my 96 Steamer, they are different?  The new one has less filter surface area.

New one is on top, bottom one came with my bike..

(none of my picasa links will properly imbed?)

Would there be a different size filter for the later year bikes?  Does it matter?  I know how picky these things are with their air flow and running smooth.  I'd hate to button it up with the new one and not have it work.

THE FILTERS WERE ALL THE SAME FOR ALL YEAR STEAMERS as far as OEM filters , K&N may have changed for some reason though , I would tend to think that either filter is going to work just fine .

Hey thanks for the quick reply..  I'll give it a shot with the newer one.

im guessin as its a K&N filter, it dosnt need to be as big as a standard filter as they flow more air.

Absolutely, I don't want to buy another, both are in fine shape, and cleaned up nicely...  It's just the small concern over appropriate air flow I wanted to check on....

Was also checking because the new box has two bolts along each side that the box that came with my bike did not have.  You can see the two notches along the sides of the filter (top) where the bolts pass through..  Old box and filter lack those bolts/notches (old filter only has one notch on each side that's centered)...

Not only is the newer one narrower, its not as wide, several square inches worth of filter area less.
