A week and a half ago I burned up my charging system. I'd been riding a lot in 100+ degree (f) heat. I don't know what all was damaged but at the minimum it was the Reg/Rec and connectors. I read about every post I could find on the subject here on the forum and decided to replace pretty much the whole system. I purchased a Rick's Stator and a Rick's MOSFET Regulator/Rectifier. I soldered the connections to minimize or eliminate that problem. I have read that the MOSFET unit runs a good 50% cooler than the old shunt units that come stock but I'm still trying to figure out some ducting or something to help keep it cooler under that side cover.
Anyway, Someone on this forum told me that Triumph makes riders and mechanics out of owners. I believe that now and I am HOOKED!
I once posted here that I was going to buy a cruiser, I've ridden about 20 different makes and models and NOT A ONE holds a candle to my Tiger. I am buying one, an1100 Virago as a second bike to beat around on but I'm keeping my Trumpet.  I'll continue rebuilding this bike and riding it til I die!!!!

What year bike?  I'm looking at rick's and electrosport and they only list the 01->up.  I've got an 00 855....are they that different or is it simply something easy like changing a plug end?

the 885I is like the steamers they have a real alternator and rarely fail .they are fairly bulletproof.

"the 885I is like the steamers they have a real alternator and rarely fail "

to that end; what is involved in the 885 system? I am swapping a 955 in from a 2000 Sprint RS and still have all the parts from the 885 Tiger; can I simply swap the alternators? is there more to it like the Reg/rectifier and wiring and stator like Tazshindo did?

nope won't work you will have to use the stator and r/r for the 955

Youve either got a stator/reg rectifier, or an alternator. All Tiger 955 engines have a stator as do the later Sprints/Daytonas. The earlier 955 Engines in the sprints etc had an external alternator like the 885 Tiger, outputs may have varied but swapping alternators shouldnt be a problem.

okay now lets take that one step further.  Since I was up close and personal with my airbox today I took a good look and yep, good old ND alternator.

What options are out there for a high output unit?  I usually like to run heated jacket liner and gloves, and on really cold (10f or below), I add the heated pants and socks.

I don't plan any extra lighting and won't be running the heated grips, but still, I understand the full heated gear would be too much for the little kitty cat...

Unless you know some one who can do a specialist rewind on the ND alternator, you are looking at about 300w total from a good one. Having said that exploring large Jap bikes might un-earth a larger capacity alternator, ie, Kawasaki, as they did the 'piggyback' style.

I may as well do it, as I'm gonna get blamed for it anyway.

The '00 Sprint alternator is the same part number Denso unit, so I got that goin' for me.....

Rick's says 'nope', not enough space inside that unit to rewind for mo' power.

OTOH, I have a spare coming (good used $49 from fleabay), so i'm going to take it to one of the local rebuilders to see what they say.  Around here they can do amazing things with duct tape and zip ties.
